Chapter 1 Coming home
Aya stepped off the bus, squinting against Kaduna City's scorching sun. Familiar landmarks and dusty streets welcomed her back.
As she walked home, memories flooded her mind. Law school, writing, and city freedom had been her escape. But her mother's illness brought her back.
"Assalamu alaikum, Mama," Aya said, embracing Amira tightly.
"Wa alaikum salam, my darling," Amira replied, her voice weak.
Aya's gaze lingered on old family photos. Her father, Karim, smiled beside her brothers: Zaid, Ayan, Zain, and Asad.
That evening, as Aya helped Amira with dinner, her brothers shared stories of their day. Laughter and warmth filled the room.
After dinner, Aya retreated to her room, surrounded by memories. Books, scribbled notes, and familiar comforts enveloped her.
As she settled in, her phone buzzed. Hamud's text flashed: "Welcome back, Aya! Let's catch up soon."
Aya smiled, feeling a sense of normalcy wash over her.
