Chapter 1: alone
i feel like some people believe in love at first sight, i however am not one of those
i get a call from the airport. due to the snowstorm all flights are cancelled. i am left with a choice, risk my life driving or stay home for christmas. two things i dont want to do.
i throw myself onto the bed and sob. being alone on christmas is sad, but being dead is sadder. i get ready for 13 days of absolute and complete torture
i call my mom to tell her i cant make it to missisipi tonight. or at all. she begins crying. i feel terrible.
i have to go to the grocery store. i was kinda ready to not buy groceries but i do need them. i was ready for a vacation.
the man at the grocery store gives me his number, ross jameson. once i get home i text him "its grocery store girl, Niko Reign."
he responds three and a half hours later
we chat for hours, about the most random things. he has a pet gerbil named sire rochester. its really cute actually.
hes also in the same situation as me, flight cancelled and all. his name is ross james, however ive already known that. hes 26 years old, so 8 years older than me, he graduated from harvard university with a degree in neuroscience. im a highschool drop out
that night i had a dream about him. he was selling hotdogs at my older brothers football game. he ended up chatting with me for an hour and we went on a date
i would never be able to pull someone like him. in the morning he sends me a goodmorning text. i giggle, i cant like him already
right?
we talk all day, i ask him what hes doing since his flight got cancelled, he asked if we could celebrate together, so hes staying with me for the two weeks that we had planned to spend with our families.
he comes over and i show him the rooms, giving him a little tour. "you look tired, niko. are you okay?" he asks. "just stayed up way too late last night"
Niko felt a rush of warmth at Ross’s concern, but she quickly masked it with a teasing smile.
“I guess I’m just too fascinating to turn away from,” she joked, trying to lighten the mood.
They settled into an easy rhythm, cooking together and sharing stories that felt oddly intimate for two strangers. As they laughed over burnt cookies, Niko couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe this snowstorm had brought her something unexpected, something she hadn’t even dared to hope for.
Would this be the ultimate Christmas surprise?
The days rolled on, each one blurring into the next as Niko and Ross navigated the quirks of each other’s company. They transformed her small apartment into a cozy haven, stringing up lights and piling blankets on the couch for movie marathons. The snow continued to fall outside, wrapping the world in a quiet blanket that made everything feel magical—even in the midst of a storm.
One evening, while sipping hot cocoa and watching a cheesy holiday movie, Niko caught Ross glancing at her, a soft smile playing on his lips. “What?” she asked, feigning innocence.
“You just look… happy,” he replied, his gaze steady. Niko’s heart raced, and she suddenly felt vulnerable under his scrutiny.
“Yeah, well, I’ve got a lot to be happy about,” she replied, her voice a touch too high. “Snow days, cookies, and good company.”
“Good company, huh?” he teased, nudging her playfully. “I like the sound of that.”
As the days turned into a rhythm of laughter, shared meals, and late-night conversations, Niko began to let her guard down. Ross shared stories from his time at Harvard, revealing a softer side beneath his polished exterior. Niko shared her own experiences, her past a patchwork of choices that had led her here, feeling both proud and uncertain.
Then, one night, after a long day of ice skating and hot drinks, they found themselves sitting on the couch, wrapped in a blanket. Niko could feel the electricity in the air. Ross turned to her, his expression serious yet gentle.
“Niko, can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” she said, her heart pounding.
“Do you believe in second chances?” His eyes searched hers, as if he were trying to read the depths of her soul.
She hesitated, recalling her past—failures, missed opportunities. “I think… I think we all deserve them. But it’s hard to believe we can change.”
He nodded thoughtfully. “I get that. I wasn’t exactly a perfect student either. I had my struggles, and I still do. But I believe in trying.”
Niko felt a swell of emotion. “Me too. I just never thought trying would lead to… this.” She gestured between them, the warmth palpable.
Ross smiled, a flicker of something deeper passing between them. “What if we stopped overthinking it and just embraced the moment?”
Her breath caught in her throat. “What do you mean?”
He moved a little closer, their shoulders touching. “I mean, why not make the most of this unexpected time together? You’ve already made it special for me.”
With the flickering lights and the crackle of the fireplace, Niko could feel the pull of something undeniable. “Are you suggesting we make this a real Christmas?”
“I am,” he said softly. “Just us, right here. No expectations, just… us.”
Niko felt her heart flutter. “Okay. Let’s make it unforgettable.”
And as the snow continued to fall outside, a sense of possibility unfurled within her, warming her from the inside out. Maybe this wasn’t love at first sight, but it felt like the start of something just as wonderful.
They spent the next few days creating their own holiday traditions. They baked cookies, built a makeshift fort in the living room, and even attempted to decorate a small, scraggly tree they found at a local market. Each moment felt charged with excitement, and Niko could hardly believe how quickly Ross had become a part of her life.
On Christmas Eve, they decided to have a movie marathon featuring all the classics. As they snuggled under blankets, Niko realized she could see Ross’s breath in the chilly air. “Do you want to make a toast?” she suggested, pulling out two mugs filled with hot cider.
“To new friendships and unexpected adventures,” Ross said, raising his mug. Niko clinked hers against his, feeling a warmth that went beyond the cider.
“I think I could get used to this,” she whispered, her heart racing as their eyes locked. In that moment, she knew that this Christmas was turning into something she’d never imagined—a fresh start, a spark of hope, and perhaps, a love she hadn’t dared to dream of.
As the evening wore on, the flickering glow of the TV cast playful shadows across the room. They laughed at the ridiculous plots of the movies, their laughter intertwining like the festive lights draped around the apartment. Every shared joke and soft smile drew them closer, and Niko found herself stealing glances at Ross when she thought he wasn’t looking.
“Why do you keep looking at me?” he asked suddenly, a teasing lilt in his voice.
“Because you’re kind of fascinating,” she admitted, a blush creeping up her cheeks. “I mean, I never expected to be stuck with someone who’s actually fun to be around.”
“Same here,” Ross replied, his expression turning sincere. “You’ve made this whole situation a lot better than I could have imagined.”
When the final credits rolled, the clock struck midnight, signaling Christmas Day. Niko felt a rush of nostalgia mixed with excitement. “I can’t believe it’s Christmas,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “It feels… different this year.”
“Different good, I hope,” Ross replied, shifting closer. “You know, I’ve always had this picture of what Christmas should be, but it never felt quite right. Until now.”
Niko’s heart swelled at his words. She had thought she’d spend the holiday in solitude, yet here she was, sharing it with someone who understood her in a way she hadn’t expected. “What’s your favorite part about Christmas?” she asked, genuinely curious.
Ross thought for a moment, then replied, “It’s the moments we create with others. The unexpected connections.” He paused, searching her eyes. “Like this.”
Suddenly, the tension shifted, and the air felt thick with unspoken possibilities. Niko leaned in, her heart racing. “Maybe we can create a few more moments together.”
He grinned, his gaze steady. “I’d like that.”
With a spark of courage, she reached for his hand, feeling the warmth radiate between them. “Let’s make this a Christmas to remember.”
As they leaned in, the world outside faded away, and in that intimate moment, Niko realized that sometimes, the most beautiful connections come from the most unexpected places. And as the snow continued to fall, she embraced the magic of what could be—an unfolding story that felt like the beginning of something extraordinary.
