Chapter 1 - The Betrothal
Mei, a young woman of eighteen, stood trembling as her mother draped a heavy, crimson shawl over her shoulders. The shawl was embroidered with intricate golden dragons, a symbol of wealth and power. But to Mei, it felt like a shroud, a harbinger of her impending doom.
Her family’s ancestral home, a once-grand estate now fallen into disrepair, was filled with an oppressive silence. The only sound was the mournful wail of the wind, echoing through the empty rooms. Mei’s father, a gentle man, tried to comfort her, but his words were hollow.
“It’s for the best, Mei,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “We have no other choice.”
Mei knew he was right. The family’s debt was insurmountable, and the creditors were growing impatient. The only way to save them was to agree to the unthinkable: a ghost marriage.
The deceased groom was Liu, a young man from a wealthy family who had died tragically a year ago. His family, desperate to appease his restless spirit, had offered a hefty dowry and a promise of financial security in exchange for a bride to marry Liu in the afterlife.
Mei’s heart ached with dread. She had heard the stories about ghost brides, of women who were condemned to a life of eternal servitude to a malevolent spirit. She was terrified of what awaited her.
The betrothal ceremony was a somber affair. A Taoist priest performed the rituals, his voice chanting ancient incantations that seemed to echo through the very walls of the house. As the ceremony drew to a close, Mei felt a cold shiver run down her spine. She had a sense that something sinister was lurking in the shadows, watching her.
