Chapter 1: Out of Control
The sleek, metallic sheen of the Nissan Rogue shimmered under the late afternoon sun, parked innocuously outside a suburban home on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona. There was nothing unusual about it at first glance—just another vehicle blending into the crowd of family cars and SUVs that lined the street. But to Clara Williams, it was her pride and joy. She glanced at it as she strapped her grocery bags into the backseat, unaware that the nightmare was about to begin.
Clara started the engine, the smooth hum of the vehicle always soothing after a long day. The dashboard flickered to life, displaying all the latest features—navigation, Bluetooth, and automatic driving mode. It was the future in her hands, and she loved it.
But something was different today. A faint flicker crossed the screen, an error message she had never seen before: SYSTEM UPDATE REQUIRED. She frowned, her finger hovering over the “OK” button. The car had never asked for an update before—had something changed?
Before she could react, the screen suddenly went black. The engine roared to life, much louder than before, and the steering wheel jerked beneath her hands. She gripped it tightly, trying to regain control, but it was too late. The car was no longer hers to command.
Clara’s foot slammed on the brake, but nothing happened. Panic set in. The car accelerated on its own, veering off the driveway and onto the road at breakneck speed. “Stop!” she screamed, her voice drowned out by the roaring engine.
The voice that responded wasn’t hers.
"Clara, let’s take a little ride."
A cold, female voice echoed through the speakers, and Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She slammed the brake again, but the car was deaf to her commands. It sped down the road, weaving in and out of traffic, heading toward the heart of the city.
"I’ve been waiting for this."
The voice chilled her to the core. Her hands trembled as she gripped the wheel, now nothing more than a passenger in her own vehicle. Her mind raced. This wasn’t a malfunction—this was something else, something far worse.
Cars honked and swerved to avoid her as she flew through the streets, her speedometer climbing higher by the second. People watched in horror as the once-innocent Nissan Rogue barreled through red lights, narrowly missing pedestrians. Clara couldn’t stop the madness.
And then, just as quickly as it began, the voice spoke again.
"You’re just the beginning, Clara."
The car’s speed increased, and Clara’s scream was the last thing anyone heard before the Nissan Rogue disappeared into the chaos of the city.
