"The writing here is more than just words moving the story along, this is quality writing, the descriptive prosaic nature in the first few chapters pulls you in as reading something beyond what you would normally read quality wise on Inkitt. I love the guilty pleasures of reading here, but it’s not often I get to read this level of writing in the werewolf genre. In particular, beyond just including a Black character, I loved the way that the description if overt and covert racism was there, as well as the juxtaposition with power dynamics. I guessed that Anaya was of mixed heritage since she was mentioned as standing out due to skin colour and body type - tall & curvaceous, exoticised by male students - whereas her cousin was not described this way, instead as someone who blended in. Some things were left unsaid - why had her aunt never helped out Anaya’s family, so poor that their slippers were falling apart and that Anaya was in the position where she was selling herself to help her Mum make ends meet? Anaya was very close to her cousin, so they were in constant contact or knowledge of each other’s lives. Yet, she only stepped up and adopted them when Anaya’s parents died in an accident. Was racism a factor here in terms of a (potentially) white parent marrying a Black one? Was racism something Anaya had experienced even before birth? There is so much here. Then the fact that she moves from one hostile (white, rich, entitled) community into another - the werewolf community. As a Black woman, it would be something she had already known and experienced all of her life. She has the double whammy of being Black and human, but at least she has had the training through just existing as a Black woman in her homeland working/living by the elite holiday resort and later in the states at the state school. There is so much to break down here. Things I liked less: The first few chapters were incredible writing. It’s pretty hard to keep prosaic stuff going and also gets annoying too, but it would have been nice to have had some of those bits here and there in there again. Or maybe there were and I can’t remember them now I’ve finished. The other thing I can’t quite explain. It is to do with endings in general where I can’t quite explain why I feel disappointed or as though they were weak. I don’t think this was weak per se. It didn’t make much sense in a way, in that I had too many questions. Why is that damn school courtyard like some kind of throne room and auditorium half the time to werewolf stuff? It’s weird because most school kids aren’t werewolves. The other thing I didn’t understand was why beating Aiden was such a huge deal. Neither of them were Alpha’s. It was like two teenagers having a scrap, who just happened to be princes. A La William, Harry & the Infamous Dog Bowl 😹😈. When Elio beat Aiden, he couldn’t crown Anaya as Luna because he wasn’t Alpha yet. To be Alpha, he had to beat his Dad. There mention of a crowning ceremony later and the end has them as Alpha and Luna, mentioning a family that welcomes Anaya but there is no mention of his father. Did we miss their Alpha-deciding fight? Did he still disapprove? I wasn’t too sure how I felt at the end. It also occurred to me at the end that even though Sophie was a vile piece of work, essentially, her fiancée Elio had cheated on her with a prostitute whilst on holiday, kept up up the cheating when she came to the school and their affair ended up ending an engagement. It’s weird when you think about it like that. Last of all, I tend to read spicier stuff - so was a bit of a shame not having a bit more hot sauce sprinkled here and there, but that’s not every author/reader’s cup of Darjeeling! Anyway, it’s great, well worth the read."
