Chapter 1 the stranger at the diner.

Nina wiped her hands on her apron, sighing as she glanced at the clock. It was the same as every day. The steady rhythm of the diner at lunchtime, the clinking of plates, the low hum of conversations, and that unmistakable smell of coffee that lingered no matter how many windows they opened. The door jingled, signaling another customer, but she didn’t need to look to know who it was. Don. He came in every day at the same time, slipping into his usual booth at the back, quiet and reserved. There was something about him that drew Nina’s eye, even when she tried not to notice. He wasn’t loud like some of the other regulars, never trying to flirt or crack jokes like the truckers who came through. No, Don was different. There was a weight to him, a quiet intensity. His dark eyes followed her every move, though he hardly said a word beyond his order—always black coffee, sometimes eggs, never more. “Your usual?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady as she approached his table. Don looked up, his gaze meeting hers, and for a moment, Nina felt like she was standing in the middle of a storm. His eyes were dark, unreadable, but there was something beneath the surface, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. She wondered why a man like him came to a place like this every day. He didn’t fit the typical diner crowd with his sharp suits and the air of authority that clung to him like a shadow. “Yes,” he replied, his voice deep, gravelly, sending a small shiver down her spine. “And whatever you recommend today.” She smiled, a little surprised. He never strayed from his routine. “I’ll surprise you,” she said, jotting down the order before heading back to the counter. She didn’t understand why he kept coming back. Day after day. No one else seemed to notice him much, but she felt his presence every time he walked in the door. There was something about Don—something she didn’t want to admit intrigued her. Maybe it was the way he seemed to see her, really see her, like no one else ever had. As she made his coffee, she found herself glancing over at him again. He sat back, arms resting on the table, his posture relaxed but alert, as if he was always ready for something. Nina had heard whispers around town about him. Some said he was dangerous, others said he was powerful. But no one really knew for sure. The rumors didn’t scare her, though they should have. She approached his table again, setting the coffee and plate down in front of him. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the air thick with unspoken words. Then, he broke the silence. “Thank you, Nina.” Her name sounded different coming from him, like a promise or maybe a warning. She swallowed, unsure why her heart was racing. “Don, can I ask you something?” She didn’t know why the words came out. Maybe she was just tired of wondering. He looked at her, raising an eyebrow slightly, waiting. “Why do you come here every day?” she asked, her voice quieter now, almost afraid of the answer. A slow smile spread across his face, one that made her breath catch. “Isn’t it obvious?” She blinked, taken aback. “Not to me.” “I come here for you, Nina.” His words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. For her? She didn’t know what to say, so she said nothing, just stood there with her heart pounding, unsure if she should feel flattered or afraid. Maybe a little of both. Before she could respond, one of the other waitresses called her name, and she quickly excused herself, escaping the intensity of his gaze. But as she worked through the rest of her shift, she couldn’t stop thinking about him, about the way his words had made her feel. When the day finally wound down, and the last few customers trickled out, she found herself lingering near the back, glancing toward Don’s table. He was still there, nursing his coffee like he always did. But today felt different. There was a tension in the air, something unspoken between them. She didn’t know what made her do it, but as the lights dimmed and the diner closed for the night, she walked over to him one last time. “Don,” she started, her voice softer now. “Maybe tomorrow, I’ll take a break and sit with you. If you’d like.” His dark eyes studied her, and for the first time, she saw something behind the quiet. A flicker of surprise, and then, that same knowing smile. “I’d like that, Nina.” She smiled back, unsure of what she was getting into, but feeling like it was too late to turn back now. As she watched him leave, the door jingling softly behind him, she couldn’t help but wonder what she had just invited into her life. There was something about Don, something dangerous and alluring all at once. But she was willing to find out. What she didn’t know was that Don’s world was far more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. Because Don wasn’t just some mysterious stranger at the diner. He was a man with secrets, a man with power—power that came from the shadows. And tomorrow, Nina would begin to learn just how deep those shadows ran.
