Chapter 1- Charlie's Attitude

**Late-Night Gaming Session**

The soft glow of Charlie Miller’s computer screen illuminated his dimly lit room, where the sounds of virtual gunfire merged with the distant hum of Calgary at night. Posters of iconic video games adorned the walls, while clutter—discarded snack wrappers and scattered controllers—lay strewn about, creating a sanctuary for late-night escapism.

Charlie, 25, sat at his desk, his brow furrowed in concentration. He wore a well-worn hoodie and sweatpants, embodying the relaxed demeanor of a seasoned gamer. On his headphones, laughter from his friends echoed through the speakers, blending seamlessly with the clamor of the game.

“Come on, Charlie! You call that a move? My grandma plays better!” Oliver’s voice crackled through the line, filled with playful mockery.

“Just wait until I unleash my secret weapon!” Charlie shot back, a competitive fire igniting in his eyes as he focused on the screen.

The trio was deep into a heated multiplayer battle, their camaraderie vibrant despite the physical distance that separated them. Yet, amidst the excitement, Charlie’s mind began to drift. A quick glance at his phone revealed a notification about an assignment still pending, due tomorrow at 3 PM. A familiar pang of anxiety gripped him, but he quickly shook it off, redirecting his focus to the game.

As the action heated up, Charlie's character was suddenly eliminated. The room erupted with laughter as Xavier, sporting the latest gaming gear, reveled in the moment. “Looks like someone needs to practice! You’re not getting the high score anytime soon!”

Charlie groaned, a playful frown crossing his face. “Ha ha, very funny. I was just letting you win!”

Oliver noticed the brief shift in Charlie’s mood and leaned in, his tone softening. “What’s up, man? You were on fire a second ago.”

Charlie hesitated, glancing at his phone again. “Just got a reminder about that assignment due tomorrow. I haven’t even started it yet.”

“Dude, prioritize! Gaming can wait,” Oliver said, teasingly. “You don’t want to be that guy who pulls an all-nighter for a grade, do you?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Charlie replied, shaking his head with a half-smile. “I’ll get to it… eventually.”

As the game resumed, they dove back into the virtual chaos, the tension of reality fading away. Charlie felt the thrill of the game wash over him, temporarily pushing aside the worries that loomed over his future. The laughter and excitement filled the room, a reminder of why he cherished these moments with his friends.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps approached from the hallway, breaking through their banter. The door creaked open, and Nora, Charlie's mom, stepped into the room, her apron tied around her waist and a warm smile on her face.

“Dinner will be ready in about ten minutes, you guys!” she announced, her voice cheerful yet firm. She glanced at Charlie, her expression shifting slightly. “Charlie, can you please stop playing for a bit and help me in the kitchen?”

He hesitated, glancing at the screen as a new round was about to start. “Just a few more minutes, Mom. We’re almost at the final round!”

Nora crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. “You know your dad is coming home from his shift soon. If he finds you still playing, he might get angry.”

At the mention of Marco, Charlie felt a slight tension knot in his stomach. “Okay, okay, I’ll help,” he replied, reluctantly setting down his headset.

“Thank you,” she said, relief washing over her face. “I made your favorite—spaghetti and garlic bread.”

“Awesome! I’m on my way,” Charlie said, getting up from the desk.

As he stood, Oliver chimed in from his home, smirking. “Looks like someone’s gonna get grounded if Dad catches him slacking off.”

“Yeah, maybe he’ll take away your gaming privileges,” Xavier added, grinning. “Imagine that—a life without gaming. You’d actually have to study!”

“Very funny,” Charlie replied with a mock glare, shaking his head as he walked toward the kitchen. He could hear their laughter fading as he stepped into the warmth of the hallway.

Charlie knocked on the twins’ door. “Hey, Lucas! Lily! Dinner’s ready!”

He heard giggles in response. “Come in!” Lucas shouted, his voice filled with mischief.

Charlie opened the door to find Lucas and Lily perched on their beds, their faces adorned with cheeky grins. Before he could react, they threw pillows at him, erupting into laughter.

“Nice try, but you’re going to have to do better than that!” Charlie said, rolling his eyes as he dodged the fluffy projectiles. “Dinner’s ready, and if you don’t hurry, I’ll tell Dad you were throwing things at me!”

Lily, wide-eyed and innocent, chimed in, “But we were just practicing our pillow-fighting skills!”

“Yeah! We’re professionals!” Lucas added, trying to stifle his laughter.

“Oh, really? Because I think you both need more practice!” Charlie shot back playfully, stepping into their room. “Now, come on before I really tell Dad.”

Suddenly, they froze as the distant sound of sirens blared outside, growing closer. The twins exchanged startled glances, and before Charlie could say another word, they bolted from the room, giggling as they raced past him.

“Wait! You can’t just run away!” Charlie shouted after them, but they were already down the hall.

“Daddy’s home!” Lily squealed, her innocence shining through as she dashed toward the front door.

Charlie chuckled to himself, following at a more measured pace. He entered the kitchen, where Nora was setting the table, the comforting aroma of garlic bread wafting through the air. “The twins are on their way, but I think I scared them with my ‘dad’ threat,” he said with a grin.

“Good! Maybe they’ll behave for once,” Nora replied, shaking her head but smiling.

Just then, Marco’s police car pulled into the driveway, the lights flashing briefly before he turned them off. The siren’s wail echoed softly as he stepped out of the car, looking weary yet ready to embrace his family.

“Daddy!” Lily squealed, launching herself at Marco the moment he walked through the door. He caught her effortlessly, lifting her into the air.

“Hey there, pumpkin! Did you miss me?” Marco asked, his face lighting up as he kissed her forehead.

“Always!” she said, her voice a mix of sweetness and sincerity.

“Did you two behave while I was gone?” Marco asked, glancing at the twins as they sheepishly entered the kitchen.

“Of course! We were just practicing our skills!” Lucas said, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

Marco raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? What kind of skills?”

“Pillow fighting!” Lily piped up, still in her father’s arms.

“Pillow fighting, huh? Sounds like serious business,” Marco teased, setting Lily down and ruffling Lucas's hair. “Maybe I should join the next practice session.”

As the family settled at the dinner table, Emma leaned forward, her curiosity shining through. “Dad, how was your day? Did you catch anyone?”

Marco chuckled, shaking his head. “Oh, you won’t believe it. We had a report about a ‘criminal’ who stole someone’s lawn gnome.”

“Seriously?” Emma’s eyes widened, trying to suppress a giggle. “What happened?”

“Well,” Marco continued, “it turns out the ‘criminal’ was just a neighbor’s cat who knocked it over while chasing a squirrel. We got there and found the cat sitting proudly next to the gnome like it was his trophy!”

Lily burst into laughter. “Did you arrest the cat?”

“Not quite,” Marco said with a grin. “But we did have a good laugh with the owners when we explained it. They were just glad to get their gnome back.”

“Maybe the cat was trying to start a garden decoration collection!” Charlie joked, and everyone erupted in laughter.

As they continued their dinner, Marco listened to his children share stories about their day, the warmth of family filling the room. Laughter and chatter mingled with the aromas of dinner, creating a cozy atmosphere that wrapped around them like a favorite blanket, a sanctuary from the world outside

As they gathered around the table, the family settled in with their plates filled with steaming spaghetti and garlic bread. The warmth of the meal contrasted with the coolness of the evening air outside. Laughter filled the space as they exchanged stories and playful banter.

Halfway through the meal, Lily looked up at her dad, her eyes wide with excitement. “Daddy, I want to show you something after dinner!”

“What is it, pumpkin?” Marco asked, his curiosity piqued.

“It’s a surprise! You’ll see!” she replied, bouncing in her seat.

Marco chuckled, glancing around the table. “Alright, I can’t wait. Just don’t make it too messy!”

As the conversation flowed, Marco turned his attention to Charlie. “So, how was your day, Charlie? Anything interesting happen?”

“It was good, Dad,” Charlie replied, shoveling a forkful of spaghetti into his mouth. “Professor Harrison was asking for help with something. He said he might need an extra set of hands for the project we’re working on.”

Marco nodded thoughtfully. “Yeah, I got a message about that earlier. I’ll keep an eye out for him. He’s a good guy; I know he appreciates your help.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Charlie said, a hint of reluctance in his voice. “It’s just… you know how it is. I’d rather be gaming than working on assignments.”

“I get that,” Marco replied with a knowing smile. “But remember, balancing your hobbies and responsibilities is key. It’ll pay off in the long run.”

Charlie shrugged, acknowledging his dad's advice but feeling the weight of his own indecision about the future.

Lily piped up again, eager to shift the focus. “Can we eat faster? I really want to show Daddy my surprise!”

“Okay, okay! Just a few more bites,” Marco laughed, enjoying his daughter’s enthusiasm. “Let’s finish up so we can see what you’ve got.”

As they polished off their meals, the table filled with the sounds of cheerful chatter, the bonds of family strengthening with every shared laugh

After dinner, Nora began to clear the table, her movements efficient yet gentle. Emma joined her, grabbing a few plates and bringing them to the sink.

“Mom, can I help with anything?” Emma asked, her voice bright.

“Just rinse those off for me, please,” Nora replied, smiling at her daughter. “You know how messy the spaghetti can get.”

As they worked side by side, the warmth of family lingered in the air, filled with the clinking of dishes and soft laughter.

Meanwhile, Marco knelt down beside Lily, who was bouncing with excitement. “Alright, pumpkin, what do you want to show me?” he asked, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.

Lily pulled a colorful drawing from under the table. “Look! This is my picture from school today!” She held it up proudly, revealing a crayon masterpiece filled with bright colors.

Marco leaned in closer, examining the artwork. “Wow! It’s beautiful! Who’s who in this family portrait?”

Lily pointed enthusiastically. “This is me!” she said, indicating a stick figure with pigtails. “And this is Mommy,” she continued, pointing to a taller figure with a smile. “And that’s Emma—she’s the big one!”

“And who’s this handsome guy in the uniform?” Marco asked, a grin spreading across his face.

“That’s you, Daddy!” she exclaimed, her finger tapping on the figure dressed in a police uniform, complete with a badge. “You look really brave!”

Marco chuckled, his heart swelling with pride. “You think so? I like how you drew my badge. It looks shiny!”

“Yeah! And you always help people, right? Like in your stories!” Lily said, her eyes sparkling with admiration. “You catch the bad guys!”

“Sometimes, but I also help lost pets find their way home,” Marco added, his tone playful. “I think you’re the real artist in the family.”

Lily beamed, her face lighting up at the praise. “I want to be a police officer like you when I grow up, Daddy!”

“I’d love that, Lily,” Marco said, wrapping an arm around her. “But you can be anything you want. Just remember to follow your heart.”

As they shared this tender moment, Emma and Nora exchanged smiles from the kitchen, appreciating the bond between father and daughter.

As Marco continued admiring Lily's artwork, Lucas peeked over his sister's shoulder, curiosity etched on his face. “Hey, where are me and Charlie in this picture?” he asked, scanning the colorful scene.

Lily giggled and pointed to a couple of stick figures at the bottom of the drawing. “You’re right here, Lucas! You’re the one with the cool hat!” she said, indicating a figure with a drawn baseball cap.

“And Charlie’s right next to you!” she added, her finger moving to a stick figure with messy hair and a game controller in hand. “He’s playing video games!”

Marco chuckled at the representation. “Looks like I’m going to have to step up my game if you two are always gaming!”

“Yeah! And I’ll be the best player!” Lucas declared, puffing out his chest playfully.

“Only if you practice,” Lily teased, sticking her tongue out at him.

“Alright, I’ll practice!” Lucas shot back, grinning. “But first, let’s see Dad in action—he’s the one catching all the bad guys!”

Marco laughed, enjoying the lively banter between his children. “You two make a great team, just like in your games.”

---The Evening Winds Down

As the night deepened, Marco excused himself to check on some reports from the day. Charlie joined him in the small home office, where the smell of coffee lingered in the air.

“Hey, Dad,” Charlie began, leaning against the doorframe, “about that transfer operation you mentioned... Is it going to be dangerous?”

Marco paused, the weight of the question hanging in the air. “Every operation has its risks, Charlie. But we’ve prepared for it. We’re just doing our jobs,” he said, trying to reassure him.

“Just be careful, okay?” Charlie said, his concern palpable. “I don’t want to hear about you getting hurt.

Marco nodded, a hint of seriousness in his eyes. “I promise I’ll be careful. But I need you to do your part too—focus on your studies, okay? This family needs you.”

“Yeah, I will,” Charlie replied, appreciating his dad’s insistence. “Thanks, Dad.”

Here’s how we can integrate those elements into the evening’s conclusion

After sharing her drawing, Lily’s expression shifted from pride to concern. “Dad, can you help me with my math homework? I can’t figure out this problem!”

“Of course, sweetheart! Bring it over,” Marco replied, motioning for her to sit beside him on the couch.

Lily scampered over, her homework in hand, and plopped down next to him. Marco took a look at the worksheet, furrowing his brow in concentration. “Okay, let’s see what we’ve got here.”

As he helped her, Nora finished washing the last of the dishes and joined them in the living room. “How’s the math tutoring going?” she asked with a smile.

“Slow but steady,” Marco replied, glancing at Lily, who was nodding enthusiastically as he explained a tricky concept. “We’re tackling some serious equations here.”

Once Lily grasped the problem, she clapped her hands excitedly. “I get it now! Thanks, Dad!”

Nora smiled and added, “Speaking of thanks, how about a bedtime story for my little mathematician?”

“Yes! Storytime!” Lily exclaimed, her eyes lighting up.

“Alright, my lovely princess. Let’s get you settled in,” Nora said, ushering Lily to the stairs.

As they made their way to Lily’s room, Lucas suddenly burst into the room, a wide grin plastered on his face. “I’ll help with the story too!” he declared, running after them.

“Only if you promise to behave,” Nora said, a playful warning in her tone.

In the bedroom, Marco followed, ready to settle in for storytime. “You know, I could tell you a story about a brave knight who saved the kingdom from an evil dragon!” he suggested dramatically.

“Or how about a funny story about Dad trying to catch a garden gnome?” Lucas chimed in, his eyes dancing with mischief.

“Yeah!” Lily giggled. “That sounds better!”

As they laughed, Charlie lingered by the door, watching the scene unfold. The warmth of the moment made him smile, and he felt a tug of playfulness rise within him. He quietly snuck in behind Lucas and suddenly tickled him from behind.

“Hey! What the—” Lucas squealed, laughter bursting from him as Charlie continued to tickle him.

“Just giving you a taste of your own medicine!” Charlie teased, and soon Marco joined in, tickling Lucas as well.

“Dad! No fair!” Lucas shouted through laughter, writhing to escape their grasp.

The room filled with joyful chaos, echoes of laughter ringing as Nora tried to maintain order, waving her arms playfully. “Alright, alright, save some giggles for storytime!”

After a few more minutes of laughter, they finally settled down, with Lily nestled comfortably in her bed as Marco began to wea

ve a silly tale about knights, gnomes, and heroic adventures.

As the night drew to a close, Charlie felt a sense of contentment wash over him. These moments—filled with laughter, love, and the chaos of family—were what truly mattered.
