Chapter -1 Introduction
Hi! I’m Virat, I was 17 when we moved to Raipur. My father is a government teacher, a very weirdly open minded guy. He would allow me to do anything I want but I must get home by eight. Its like I have a girlfriend not an issue, but I’m late by 5mins and bam!! here comes a flying sleeper right at my face. :’)
I never really understood him. He tries to be punctual but he’s never on time. Sometimes when he was high he used to tell me about his high-school crush, off course when mom was not around. Sometimes he was very strict the other times he was the most chill person I’ve known.
He got me to this school St. Joseph English Medium, which was a missionary school as it is quite obvious from its name. My father wanted me to learn English so he thought sending me to this school was a good idea although no-one really spoke English there except for Miss Veronica our English teacher, a beautiful lady in her early 30s who was very religious too. Apart from literature she often narrated biblical stories in the class, which I found very interesting.
Just like me there was another student who recently joined our class —Sarah, Sarah was an Anglo-Indian, her father was Indian and mother belonged to a British family. I still remember our first encounter, the first time I saw her, I was standing outside of the classroom as a punishment for not completing my homework. It was a winter’s morning, as she walked towards the classroom I saw everything in slow-motion like it was a scene from a movie. Her face as bright as a full moon, her silky hair swaying with the wind, her smile when she looked at me was like nothing I can compare with. I wanted to look away, so that she doesn’t think I’m a creep but I just couldn’t help but stare at her as she walked in. Few minutes passed teacher yelled my name, “Virat! come inside.”
As I came in I saw her sitting right next to my desk, My hands were shaking nervously, brain went on stand by mode, I totally forgot I was being scolded.
“Virat! Virat! answer me,” my teacher shouted, “Y —Yes ma’am…” I replied, my voice trembling.
“It’s your last warning Virat,” She shouted again.
“Yes ma’am,” I replied, embarrassed.
“Back to your seat,” she said with an angry look on her face.
“Sarah! come here my child let me introduce you to the whole class,”
We crossed each other as I was going to my seat, I can still remember that sweet fragrance, she smelled like honey and jasmine.
“Everyone! this is Sarah your new classmate, she’s mute so be kind with her and treat her well,” the teacher introduced Sarah.
My heart sank as I heard she can’t speak, naturally I felt bad for her, the entire class started murmuring in shock.
“Silence!!” said the teacher.
We all started to read the chapter again, but my focus was somewhere else. She was sitting right next to me, I couldn’t believe it; it was overwhelming. “Is this what they call love?” I whispered to myself.
I was turning the pages cluelessly and my mind was on a trip to wonderland where I was imagining myself with Sarah, on a date. Just as I was daydreaming.
Sarah tapped on my shoulder…
