Chapter 1
" -And remember call us if you need anything -we're just a phone call away- I love you Alaya." My mom smiled down at me while she brushed both of my shoulders to give me a once over.
"Yea yea I love you too, but I'll be fine mom." I groaned, swatting her hands away.
The last thing I needed was to be viewed as the coddled freshman at UMT, this was a new start. I grabbed both of my bags from my dad and hugged him goodbye. It was going to be a hard transition from living at home to the dorms but I had faith that I could do it. As long as my roommate wasn't a total bitch then we were cool.
"I'm gonna miss you pumpkin." My dad kissed my forehead and I relished the feeling rather than swat him away like my mother. I was a daddies girl, and I was going to miss him most of all.
"I'm gonna miss you too dad, please take care of yourselves."
I waved a quick goodbye to my parents as they both got into their little Subaru and drove away. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to sturdy myself before I spun around with a wide smile, staring at my new home. UMT was beautiful, the architecture reminded me of a medieval castle straight from the history books. With its high, glorious peaks, and weathered windows.
I quickly made my way to dorm 403, I was bunked with a Kaeli Mills and I was curious as to what kind of person she'd be. Hopefully we got along because if not these next 4 years would be a living hell. I knocked before opening the door softly, a girl with dark black curls sat at a desk on the right side of the room. She turned as I entered and smiled, I gave a small wave and offered my hand for an introduction.
"Hey, my name is Alaya. You must be Kaeli?"
"Hi! It's so good to finally meet you, and yes that's me." She grasped my hand in a firm but friendly hand shake as she smiled.
"So I'm assuming this is my half of the room?" I gestured to the bare and empty half. She flashed a sheepish smile and tucked a curl behind her ear.
"Yea sorry, I figured since I came first you wouldn't be opposed to me getting first pick."
I chuckled at her and began to heave my bags onto my bed to put away my things. "I don't mind, it would be pretty bold for me waltz in here demanding my pick when I was the last to show. I'm just grateful to finally be out of my parents' house."
"Yeah tell me about it, my parents were such control freaks."
I turned towards her and see her smile had vanished, in its place was a deep furrowed brow.
"Well thank god they're not here. We get to experience college life at its fullest capacity!"
"Yea..." she mumbled.
I watched her frown dissipate and turn into a bright red blush. I couldn't help the grin that sprawled on my own face as I anticipated her words.
"Well... I've heard a few people talk about a party that's supposed to go down tonight. Maybe it's a good way to kick off the school year?"
"Kaeli, I think we're going to get along great."
We laughed as we talked to one another, getting to know each other and our boundaries. Kaeli was a good girl, the typical golden child that never thought twice about breaking the rules. She told me all about how her parents would force her to go to church camps and Sunday school. How she wasn't allowed to date boys unless they were approved by them. I couldn't help but feel bad for her, and the sheltered life her parents had forced upon her.
It was drastically different from the life that my parents had given me. I wasn't spoiled, and I had to earn most of what I had achieved in life. Not that Kaeli was, but most of today's generation were. Thankfully they were still supportive, and were very open minded individuals. Listening to Kaeli's life gave me a little bit of insight into how differently things could have been for me. I couldn't help but thank my lucky stars for the family I was born in to.
It took a bit of convincing but after a motivational speech about how college was supposed to be a once in a lifetime experience I finally got Kaeli on board with going to tonight's party.
"Oh my god. You look hot."
I blushed at Kaeli's compliment as I turned side to side, admiring my outfit in the mirror above the dresser. I chose a white halter top, and a black pair of pants that hugged my curves a little too well. My cotton pink hair was tossed into a claw clip on my head and I put on a nice Smokey eye. I nodded in approval as I gave myself one last once over.
"I do huh?"
She nodded enthusiastically as she walked to stand next to me, she gazed at our reflection and I threw my arm around her shoulders. She was a couple inches shorter than me with my boots on which made doing so easier.
"Does this...look okay?"
I took a moment to look at her in our reflection and nibbled my lip in thought. I unbuttoned her white blouse a couple of bottons and pulled out the left half from her black skirt. She made a couple sounds of disapproval before I moved from the mirror and allowed her to look at herself.
She stared open mouthed back at her reflection as I smirked in satisfaction.
"Now that, is sexy."
"Wow... Alaya...thank you!"
She giggled as she threw her arms around my neck in appreciation. I patted her back in a friendly manner before I pulled away.
"Now. Where's this party?"
