Chapter 1

Childhood Memories

West and Raina's childhood was filled with the kind of friendship that runs deep and true. Growing up in a small lakeside town, they were inseparable from the moment they met in the third grade. They lived just a few houses apart, and soon, every free moment was spent together—whether riding their bikes through the neighbourhood, fishing by the lake, or inventing their own little games in the woods nearby

West was the classic adventurous kid, always daring and a little bit fearless. He’d climb trees as high as he could and encourage Raina to follow, though she was often the voice of caution. He was the type who loved the thrill of exploration, always wondering what lay beyond the next hill or under the next rock. Raina, on the other hand, was thoughtful and careful, with a book never far from her side. She was the planner, the one who’d make sure they packed snacks for their “expeditions” and often reminded him when it was time to head back home.

They balanced each other perfectly. West pulled Raina out of her shell, urging her to take risks and join in his little adventures. Raina brought West back down to earth, helping him think things through and making sure they both stayed safe.

On rainy days, when they couldn’t explore outside, they’d curl up in Raina’s living room with a stack of comic books or a game of chess (West was never quite as strategic as she was, but he didn’t mind). They dreamed big together, talking about all the things they wanted to do when they grew up. West wanted to travel the world, become a hero, and make a difference. Raina dreamed of helping others, too, maybe becoming a lawyer or a judge. Even as kids, they shared a common bond of wanting to do good.

But their bond was more than just friendship. West would tease Raina about how she organized her books or how she always seemed to follow the rules, but there was never any doubt he admired her. Raina, too, was a bit in awe of his boldness, the way he never let anything hold him back. Little did they know that even then, their connection was setting the foundation for something deeper.

When they were twelve, West’s family moved to another town. They promised to keep in touch, exchanging letters and occasional phone calls, but as the years went by, life pulled them in different directions. West pursued his dream of joining the army, finding his path in service and leadership, while Raina became a magistrate, working hard to protect others and uphold justice.

Despite the distance, their memories of each other remained vivid. And when they reconnected years later, it was as if no time had passed. They still understood each other in ways no one else did, still knew the deepest parts of each other’s hearts.
