Chapter 1
One morning my alarm went off and that jolted me awake as I smacked it into silence. I suddenly sat up and felt my blanket slipping away from my hips. I rubbed my eyes and took in the dim morning light and looked around my cluttered room…I really need to clean up around here…While I walked to my closet I was cracking my neck and rolling my shoulders to shake off the tiredness. Today I decided to just pull on a random shirt before leaving my room, I mean, whos really gonna be paying attention to me? I made my way to the kitchen ready to prepare breakfast. I filled the coffee maker and set it to brew before wearily opening the fridge, scanning its sparse contents. A sigh escaped my lips as I realized nothing looked appealing, so I looked through the whole kitchen for something to satisfy my hunger.
Once again I found nothing and went to the living room and settled down on the old couch, I lean to grab the remote from the coffee table and switched on the television, flicking through channels until the news blared on, droning about recent events—though, to be honest, I couldn’t care less.
The coffee maker beeps from the kitchen. I shuffled to the counter, grabbing a mug and positioning it beneath the spout of the coffee maker as I poured a steaming cup. Setting the mug down, I reached for the creamer, drizzling it into the coffee along with a spoonful of sugar.
I took a sip of the coffee, the rich liquid gliding down my throat and spreading a comforting warmth through my entire body. I smiled to myself; there’s nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee to kickstart the day. I savored another sip before placing the mug back on the countertop, then headed to my room to change into my work attire. I opened my dresser drawer, selecting a pair of comfy black sweats and a crisp white T-shirt. After slipping into my new clothes, I finished off my look with my favorite shoes, ready to take on the day.
I grabbed my light brown leather coat, slipping it on before heading back to the kitchen to retrieve my coffee. A rush of cold winter air swept into the house as I was opening the door, a stark contrast to the cozy warmth of my living room. I shivered slightly as I stepped outside, locking the door behind me before making my way to my car. Once inside the front seat, I quickly turned on the heat, savoring the anticipation of warmth to come.
I began the ten-minute drive to the downtown library, where I worked as an assistant. My day would be filled with shelving books and helping patrons check out their favorites, all alongside my coworker Sam. Upon arriving at the library, I found a parking spot. I shut off the car, grabbed my coffee, and stepped out while I was locking the door behind me with a satisfying click. I stood next to my car for a moment and sighed, another boring day at the library.
