Chapter 1: Girl in the lab

Peter Parker trudged into the Midtown High School chemistry lab, head down, one strap of his backpack hanging off his shoulder. The morning light filtered through the windows, casting a pale glow over the tables littered with flasks and beakers. Peter sighed, more out of habit than anything else. Another day, another experiment he’d ace, even though barely anyone seemed to notice.

"Hey, Peter!" came the familiar taunt, followed by a light shove as Flash Thompson, Midtown’s self-proclaimed king of the hallways, smirked at him. Peter forced a smile, nodding as if Flash’s teasing were nothing more than a gentle nudge.

“Gotta say, Parker, this lab coat suits you,” Flash sneered, eyeing the buttoned lab coat Peter wore. “Bet you sleep in that thing, don’t you?”

Peter laughed it off, like he always did, mumbling something in return that barely registered in his own ears. He could have easily come up with a sharp reply or even pulled a move to embarrass Flash right back. But that wasn’t him. Instead, Peter ducked his head, heading toward the far end of the lab, where he could blend in quietly, preferably with his nose in his textbook.

But today, something was different. At the end of the room, where he typically sat alone, a girl was already settled at his usual spot.

Peter stopped in his tracks.

She had blonde hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, and her face was turned down, absorbed in her notebook. She wore a look of complete concentration, her brows slightly furrowed. The girl was beautiful, but not in the typical way. There was something sharp and confident about her, a presence that seemed to occupy the space around her in a way Peter couldn’t quite understand.

As if sensing his eyes on her, she looked up and met his gaze. Her expression softened, and she gave him a warm, easy smile that made Peter’s stomach flip unexpectedly.

"Peter Parker, right?" she asked, her voice steady and sure.

Peter nodded, momentarily struck dumb.

The girl extended her hand, her smile widening. "I’m Gwen Stacy. I guess we’re lab partners?"

Peter took her hand, trying to ignore the slight tremor in his fingers. “Uh, yeah. Nice to meet you. Are you new here?”

“Just transferred. I’m from out of state. Not the most exciting move, but here we are.” She shrugged as if moving schools was nothing more than an experiment in her own life. “But hey, maybe Midtown will surprise me.”

Peter chuckled, glancing around the lab, with its dull-colored walls and tired tables. “Surprise might be a strong word.”

“Maybe. But you never know, right?” She glanced at him with a playful grin. “Besides, it looks like we’re stuck together for the year, so we’d better make it fun.”

Peter felt his cheeks grow warm. He never expected his sophomore year to bring any real excitement, let alone a new lab partner who seemed to think he was worth talking to. “I... uh, yeah, definitely,” he stammered, mentally kicking himself for not having anything more interesting to say.

Gwen just laughed, unfazed. “Relax, Parker. I don’t bite.”

The bell rang, signaling the start of class, and their teacher, Mr. Connors, stepped into the room. He was a wiry man with a perpetual scowl, his gaze sharp as he addressed the class. “Welcome back, everyone. Today, we’re going to dive into the properties of acids and bases. Partners, I expect you to work together efficiently. You’ll need to analyze and document your reactions. And remember, no eating the lab samples.”

The class chuckled, and Peter tried to focus on his notes, though his mind kept drifting to the girl beside him. Gwen opened her notebook, jotting down the instructions with a focused energy he admired. She glanced up at him from time to time, throwing him curious looks as though trying to figure him out.

“So, Parker,” Gwen whispered halfway through the experiment, “are you really as quiet as you seem, or is that just for show?”

Peter blinked, caught off guard. “Uh, I… I guess I’m just focused on the experiment,” he said, nodding to the bubbling concoction in their beaker.

Gwen tilted her head, clearly not convinced but amused. “Focused, huh? So you must be a total science whiz.”

“Well, yeah, I guess you could say that.” Peter shrugged, feeling oddly self-conscious. "I mean, chemistry’s kind of… fun."

Her grin widened. “Good. I need someone smart to balance me out. I’ve already exploded two beakers in my time, so I could use a partner with a steady hand.”

Peter laughed, his tension easing. “I’ll keep the explosions to a minimum then.”
