Pitch Black

One chapter short story

She let out a long, content sigh as she held up her drawing next to the dull lamp. The bold colors of the flowers were most noticeable in the light before she set it back down, grabbing another color pencil to continue but paused, pondering on what to create next.

She lowly hummed a random tine as she began starting on a new section of her paper. Soft, light rain started to gently patter on her window, making a smile appear.She has always loved the rain. She scoots her chair back a bit before standing up and waltzing her way towards the rusty security bar covered window.

The past few days happened to be some of her good days from being held at the asylum. No bad hallucinations or excessive self-inflicted harm took place in her room. A smile made its way onto her features as dark gray clouds started taking over the shining moonlight, making everything appear dim. Far off in the distance, lightning had struck for a split second, lighting everything up before going dark again.

She turned on her heels, ready to head back to the small table across the room but stopped mid-step as something caught her eye in the far corner. She took a deep breath and brushed it off at first, thinking it was just the shadow of a tree branch but as soon as lightning struck once more, she knew right then and there that it was something far from a simple shadow.

A small silhouette of a woman stood in the darkest corner of her room as everything in her sight lit up for a second. Once everything went dark, the silhouette disappeared. Her breath had become rigid as a deafening silence crept up her spine as she suddenly felt confined in the four cream colored walls.

"Please, no.” Her voice was barely above a whisper, as she was too afraid to catch the attention of whatever else accompanied her in the darkness. She didn’t dare move, as she knew she was being closely watched from the dark corner. A glint shimmered for no more than a second from a passing car that drove by the building. Her fear started to grow as the silhouette moved from it’s spot, ever so slowly making its way towards her.

She heard the footsteps from the night watch nurses outside her door but she couldn’t move, not even her fingers. Someone or something was stopping her from doing so. The familiar sting took place behind her eyes as tears started to form on her waterline. The weight from the figure had made the creaking boards get louder with each movement. As it continued to stalk closer, her breathing had became more short and labored from her ever growing fear.

Her fingers had clutched the material of her nightgown, making her knuckled turn white from the sheer force of her grip. Warm liquid had started to slowly ooze down her gown, staining the front and back of it a dark yellow due to her medication.

“You’re not real,” Her voice was shaky as everything around her started to get hazy while her mind started to go blank. She couldn’t see anything for a few seconds but lightning struck again, illuminating the pitch black room.

A face had appeared in front of her, it’s eyes were bloodshot red with nasty teeth. Its voice was raspy and guttural. Her stomach churned as the repulsive smell of it consumed all her senses, ”You’re mine,”

She let out a horrible bloodcurdling scream that practically shook the building. Multiple nurses burst into the room, flicking the light on and seeing nothing but her trashing everything, throwing stuff where the figure stood at in order to get away from what she saw.
