Summer Afternoon
In the ornate hall where the Countess of Pembroke’s bazaar is in full swing, the scent of expensive perfumes and the sound of laughter from the nobility fills the air. Servants with glasses on trays and hors d’oeuvres stroll among the attendees while a band of musicians liven up the atmosphere with a quiet melody.
Elizabeth Saint Claire, tall and elegant in her light blue silk dress, plays with her fan with calculated grace, her eyes studying every corner of the place. The young Marquise is today the representative of her house, the Marquis of Milford Haven, weakened by illness, and has trusted her to uphold his family name and alliances.

Her escort, a grim-faced man of impeccable bearing, stands a few paces behind her. He knows that Elizabeth never leaves anything to chance; every detail of her attire, every movement of her fan is a piece in the game of perception she masters.
The marquis has donated several works of art from his family collection, pieces as exquisite as they are rare for the auction to benefit the countess. The portrait of one of his ancestors, an oil painting with dark, expressive tones, has attracted the attention of several interested parties.
Elizabeth fixes her gaze among the billowing canvases that adorn the room, still listening to the murmuring around her. While she maintains her composure and a faint smile on her lips, thoughts circulate in her mind that no one would suspect.
-The Devereaux family should be arriving tonight,- she recalls, her eyes sharpening at the thought of the risks.
The White Rose group has charted every step of the journey of these French nobles, the Devereaux’s and so many others, whose lineage has been persecuted and threatened since the last riots in Paris after the July monarchy put down the Bourbon restoration of Louis XVIII.
As the “Grey Lady,” Elizabeth has taken on the mission of ensuring that the family arrives safely in England, protected from spies and traitors. With every second, her anxiety grows beneath her controlled exterior.
A movement in the crowd catches her attention: a group of high society ladies, murmuring amongst themselves and casting intrigued glances towards a corner of the room where one of the auctioned works, a small but detailed French landscape, is on display. Elizabeth keeps her eyes fixed on the scene, holding the fan between her fingers with the slight pressure that only she would notice.
- All in order, Lady St. Claire? -murmurs her escort.
Elizabeth does not look away from the ladies as she whispers in reply.
-All is in order, Sir Robert, but we must not let our guard down. The family we are expecting must arrive discreetly. There are rumors of a French royal guard envoy... or a traitor disguised as an ally.
Her escort nods, as unperturbed as she is, but Elizabeth can feel the tension in the air, a subtle current that seems to slip through the crowd. She is unsure if there are spies among the attendees, though she suspects that Devereaux’s arrival will arouse the interest of many, even those who would feign indifference. They must not be discovered.
Suddenly, one of her household servants who accompanied her in the carriage to attend the event approaches with a discreet note, which her hands over with a slight bow. Elizabeth pretends to open her fan in a casual gesture as she takes the paper and hides it behind the silk.
-They will be here soon. Meet at the agreed point, - she read in handwriting she immediately recognized as that of the White Rose’s chief agent in London.
Her heart is pounding under the serenity of her expression. The family has made it, but they are not safe yet. Danger lurks around every corner, between familiar and unfamiliar faces, and Elizabeth cannot afford to make a mistake. She saves the message and smiles politely at a nobleman who has approached to comment on one of the plays.
-I hope it is to your liking, sir, - she says in a soft, controlled voice. The man responds with some polite comment, but she is already thinking of her next move.
A few yards away, access to the back garden offers a quick and discreet escape. She could plead discomfort and head there to greet the Devereaux’s in person, should the situation require it. The responsibility of the Saint Claire family and loyalty to the White Rose weigh heavily on her shoulders, but Elizabeth is ready to do her duty.
Seizing the opportunity for a pause, she bows slightly to her escort.
-Stay alert. We’ll be out in the garden in a few moments, - she says gently.
He nods without further ado. They both know what is at stake.
Elizabeth, with a last glance at the crowd and a studied smile, begins to make her way into the garden, with the elegance anyone would expect of a marquise, but in her mind, she anticipates what might happen in the next few minutes. With each step, she prepares to face the unexpected, determined to protect the Devereaux family at any cost, in the role she has sworn to fulfil and in the name of the White Rose.
Elizabeth has barely crossed into the garden, feeling the coolness of twilight enveloping her, when a gentleman with a resolute and elegant air intercepts her step. Lord Arthur Beaumont, known for his exquisite manners and his fondness for beautiful women, blocks her path with a confident smile.
-Lady St. Claire, - he says with a bow that marks his interest, - would you care to grant me an exit to the tearoom? The music and conversation in the drawing room is beginning to be... overwhelming, don’t you think?
Elizabeth smiled at him with the softness and dominance that protocol demands. The only person who might see her true face is her escort, who has stopped just a couple of meters away, observing the situation discreetly. She knows the Devereaux are minutes away and every second is crucial.
-Oh, Lord Beaumont,- she replied, letting out a barely audible chuckle as she fiddled with the edge of her fan, - I’d be delighted, believe me, but I’m sorry to say I’ve gone out for some air. I’m afraid I don’t have much time left in the evening.
He smiles, as if he had interpreted her words as a veiled invitation.
-Then, perhaps another time, my lady, - he says, leaning a little closer and holding her in his gaze. His expression is so firm that Elizabeth realizes that it will not be easy to get rid of him without some strategy.
Breathing in calmly, Elizabeth holds the fan in front of her face with a slight flirtatious gesture. To her mind come the signs of courtship, the same signs that any woman in her position must master and that gentlemen read as a secret language. She lowers her gaze and, with a slight tilt of the fan, brings it to her right cheek and strikes it gently; a signal that, according to court etiquette, indicates “Yes”.
Lord Beaumont reacts as she expected, his eyes sparkle and he seems to stand taller, believing he has caught her interest. Elizabeth smiles slightly, feeling a spark of triumph.
- Is it so, my lady? - he asks with a hint of humor and interest.
- What if I told you that I would like to see you again somewhere more... intimate? - Elizabeth replies in a whisper, holding Beaumont’s gaze as she moves the fan to her lips, covering them in a gesture that means - I want to see you again.
Beaumont’s expression lights up and, for a second, he forgets everything going on around him. Elizabeth knows that she has just caught him in her little game of seduction and that very soon, with a couple of words, she could make him desist and withdraw with promises of an upcoming meeting.
-If you will excuse me, - she said, bowing her head slightly, - I have business to attend to at the moment. But I should be glad to meet you again at Lady Cavendish’s next evening. I think we might have a... much more interesting talk.
Beaumont, pleased and convinced, bows his head with a smile.
-I will count the hours until then, my lady.
With a last enigmatic smile, Elizabeth turned away, leaving him behind her. She dared not look back; she knows she has managed to get rid of him without arousing suspicion. However, the sound of an approaching carriage reminds her that her worries are not over.
The second carriage, the one carrying the Devereaux’s, glides stealthily to the meeting point at the back of the garden, as planned. Elizabeth walks towards it, adopting the bearing of a lady who is seemingly only lost in the shadows of the garden.
As she reaches the edge of the fountain, where the lights are too dim to illuminate, the carriage comes to a halt. Her escort steps forward and opens the door, nodding at the sight of the nervous passengers: a frightened-looking woman and two blindfolded children. Elizabeth maintains her composure, though her heart is pounding.
-Grey Lady, I presume, - the woman murmurs, barely whispering.
Elizabeth nods softly, and, certain that they are safe at this very moment, offers them a reassuring smile, though she knows they cannot see her.
-This way, quickly, - she says, her voice calm and steady, - I will lead them to the next carriage; from there they will be taken to a safe house.
The Devereaux’s descend carefully, and Elizabeth leads the way to the second carriage, strategically hidden behind a hedge. As they hurry noiselessly along, Elizabeth casts one last glance at the drawing room where Lord Beaumont, oblivious to the danger he has unknowingly brushed against, awaits the next meeting she never plans to grant him.
As the Devereaux family boards the new carriage, Elizabeth takes a deep breath of relief. She has accomplished one more mission, saving a noble family and keeping her promise as the Grey Lady.
-Let’s go home... I want to see my father...
-Yes, my lady...- Robert said, walking with her towards his own carriage.
A sense of relief crosses his expression. He has accompanied his lady for 12 years and, although he supported her in her cause, he can’t help but worry about her.
-Stop worrying... You’ll get old...- she said with a smile, knowing him all too well, - Everything went according to plan. We’ve been careful.
-I still want you to be safe. It’s my job...
-That’s why you’re here... You’ll see to it that nothing happens to me.
-That would be easy if I obeyed...- he murmured, helping her into the carriage and then following her into the seat in front of her, making her laugh.
-I’ve been good...
-For now...
The young woman laughed in amusement as she surveyed the scenery outside.
Her father had taught her to do things fairly and to respect her peers and those who served her. That was why she had become the Grey Lady and was helping where she could.
