ACT 1: The Chosen

Chapter 1: The Circle

The air was thick with tension in Sector 47 as the citizens gathered in the square, a sea of anxious faces illuminated by the flickering glow of old street lamps. Lyra stood among them, her heart pounding like a drum in her chest. Today was the day—The Circle—a day of fate, fear, and the unyielding grip of the government’s cruel spectacle.

She scanned the crowd, her eyes darting between familiar faces. Her mother clutched her younger brother tightly, his small frame trembling against her. Lyra’s stomach twisted. It wasn’t just her life on the line; it was a lottery of death, where names were drawn like a sick joke from a battered bowl.

The announcement platform, a rusting hunk of metal, loomed ahead. Above it, a banner hung like a dark cloud: “The Annual Arcade Games: A Celebration of Courage.” Lyra snorted at the irony. Courage? Or was it just a test of survival? She had spent her entire life avoiding the watchful eyes of the government, but today, there would be no escaping them.

“Lyra!” A voice broke through her thoughts. It was Zara, her best friend, pushing her way through the crowd. “Are you ready?” Zara’s eyes sparkled with a mix of fear and determination.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Lyra replied, forcing a smile. Zara had always been the more spirited of the two, her laughter a light against the gloom that hung over their lives. Today, that light seemed dimmer.

They were soon joined by Finn, a quiet strategist who often lingered in the background, observing rather than participating. “They say there’s a rumor,” he whispered, glancing around nervously. “The government might increase the number of tributes this year.”

“What?!” Zara exclaimed, her voice rising in panic. “How is that even fair?”

Lyra took a deep breath, trying to calm the rising tide of fear. “We can’t think like that. We have to focus on surviving.”

Before she could finish, a hush fell over the crowd. The announcer, a stout figure with a booming voice, stepped forward, his gaze sweeping across the gathering. “Citizens of Sector 47! Welcome to the Circle!” He paused for effect, the silence stretching taut.

The crowd erupted into murmurs, a wave of anxiety crashing over them. Lyra felt her palms grow clammy as she clutched the hem of her worn jacket. She exchanged a glance with Zara, who looked ready to bolt.

The announcer began to read the names of the chosen, pulling each from the bowl like it was a twisted game. With each name, a collective gasp rippled through the crowd, a reminder of the weight of fate. One by one, the boys and girls of their sector were taken, their lives reduced to entertainment for the elite.

“Next,” the announcer continued, “from Sector 47… Lyra Bennett!”

Time seemed to freeze. The world around her faded, and all she could hear was the pounding of her heart. The crowd parted like a wave, eyes now locked on her. Zara’s face drained of color as Lyra took a shaky step forward, her breath hitching in her throat.

“No,” Zara whispered, reaching out, but the moment felt surreal as if Lyra were moving through a dream. A nightmare.

She stood before the announcer, who smiled like a predator. “Congratulations, Lyra. You’ll make us proud in the Arcade Games.”

“Now, for the male tribute…” The announcer resumed, and the tension in the air felt electric. “From Sector 15… Jaxon Cole!”

Lyra’s heart sank further as Jaxon stepped forward, his face a mask of shock and resolve. She had watched him from afar in the markets—his easy smile and laughter had always drawn her in. They exchanged a brief glance, a silent understanding passing between them: they were both trapped in this cruel game.

The announcer continued, but the words blurred together. Lyra felt the weight of the world pressing down on her. Zara’s hand found her shoulder, squeezing it tight. “We’ll get through this, I promise,” she whispered, though her eyes betrayed her fear.

The crowd began to disperse as the reality of the selections set in. Lyra’s mind raced. The Arcade Games were infamous for their brutality, each trial designed to break the contestants mentally and physically. She thought of her mother, of her brother, and the life she had known.

“Lyra,” Jaxon said softly, stepping closer. “We’ll find a way to survive this together.” His voice was steady, and she drew strength from it, but uncertainty gnawed at her insides.

“We have to,” she replied, meeting his gaze. “For Zara, for Finn, and for everyone who didn’t make it.”

As they turned to leave the square, the weight of impending trials loomed over them like a dark shadow. The games were just beginning, and survival was only the first challenge. But within the depths of fear, Lyra felt a flicker of hope. Together, they would face whatever lay ahead. Together, they would fight. All her friends where picked and she doesn’t know if she can trust them anymore.
