Chapter 1

“Run, Sadie,” she whispered. “Do not stop” she murmured to herself again, trying to stay focused. pushing her legs as hard as they could go.

Sadie was breathing hard as she ran through the thick Oakland forest, She felt sharp pains from sticks and branches scratching her skin.

Out of nowhere, a rogue wolf appeared from behind a tree, Its teeth were showing, and its eyes glowed with a menacing light. Sadie’s instincts took over, and she managed to duck at the last moment, moving out of its way. The wolf growled in frustration and lunged at her again. Without a moment to think, she picked up a broken branch from the ground and struck the wolf on the head with the branch, making contact just enough to distract it.

“Stay back!” She shouted, her voice trembling despite the bravado.

The rebel growled even more fiercely, moving around her at a slow pace, its eyes shining with the threat of killing. Before Sadie could make another movement, she sensed a presence darting past her. She saw it so quickly, it was almost invisible. One powerful strike from a huge figure sent the rogue wolf crashing to the ground. The rebel let out a cry and hurriedly moved back, its retreating figure blending into the darkness.

Breathless, Sadie lurched backward, her eyes enlarged. The warrior who saved her was tall and commanding in front of her, without a doubt. His muscles were visible beneath his dark clothes as he turned to face her, earning him respect with his mere presence.

“You’re coming along with me,” the man said, his voice low but urgent.

Sadie blinked, still in shock from the sudden attack. “What?”

Suddenly, the man seized her arm and pulled her up before she could protest to it.

“I said, you’re coming with me. We don’t have time to argue about this.” He started dragging her forward, his grip firm but not painful.

“Wait… I don’t know you, who are you?” Sadie demanded, trying to shake free. “I can’t just follow you”

“Ronan,” he said quickly. “Now move fast, or we’re both dead.”

Sadie’s heart leaped with excitement upon hearing the name. “Do you mean Ronan? The notorious warrior of the werewolf legion?” Sadie couldn’t understand why he come here to rescue her and the reason behind her being in a risky situation. Just as she was about to inquire, a loud cry echoed through the air, with the noise of additional wolves approaching.

“Exactly,” Ronan quietly mumbled to himself. He quickly turned, placing himself before Sadie and the oncoming threat.

She only needed to be told once. She turned around and began to jog next to him, her legs crying out in agony. The dense forest didn’t slow Ronan down, he effortlessly navigated through it, trying to avoid obstacles and maintaining a steady pace like a seasoned pro.

Sadie struggled to stay on pace, her thoughts moving just as swiftly as her steps. For what reason did the Alpha King send rogues to pursue her? Why was Ronan assisting her?

They ran silently for a couple of minutes until the growling noise pierced the night again. Ronan suddenly stopped and forcefully pulled Sadie behind him.

“Stay back,” he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Sadie looked around his wide body, her breath getting caught in her throat. Three rebellious wolves appeared from the darkness, their eyes shining with a wild craving. Their growls echoed throughout the surroundings, showing their teeth and prepared to attack.

Ronan acted instantly. Moving swiftly, he sprinted towards the closest wolf with incredible speed. The rogue had little time to respond when Ronan’s punch hit its jaw, causing it to crash to the ground with a heavy thud. Another rebellious wolf attacked Ronan from the side, but he turned and struck his elbow against its ribcage. The wolf let out a painful howl before backing away.

Sadie observed with amazement as Ronan battled, his actions flowing smoothly and accurately. The reason for his reputation as one of the deadliest warriors in the werewolf army. Despite his skill, there were still too many of them.

One of the rogues caught sight of Sadie and ran quickly towards her, showing his teeth. Fear took hold of her, causing her to freeze. Right as the wolf was ready to attack, Ronan intervened, seizing it by the neck and hurling it into a tree, causing a loud, bone-breaking crash.

“Focus!” Ronan’s bark startled her, pulling her out of her fear. “I can’t fight and also protect you at the same moment.”

Sadie nodded, her legs wobbly but still working. She clutched a sizable long stick close by, prepared to protect herself if necessary. The last rogue circled them warily, waiting for an opening chance to strike.

Ronan ran towards it, with a low growl. On this occasion, the rogue was prepared, sidestepping and striking at Ronan’s arm with its claws. Blood splattered on the ground in the forest, yet Ronan remained unwavering. He made a grunting noise before forcefully punching the wolf’s side, causing it to fall.

.

Sadie felt her heart pounding fast. She needed to help but in what way? She didn’t possess Ronan’s fighting skills. She quickly looked around, trying to find anything that could help them gain an advantage.

Next, she noticed it: a cliff edge, located close to their current position. If they could push the rogue wolves off the edge, a short drop could provide an opportunity for them to flee.

“Ronan!” she shouted, pointing toward the cliff. “Push them that way!”

He looked briefly at her, then at the edge of the cliff, and a slight grin appeared at the side of his mouth. “Not bad.”

Ronan seized the nearest rogue by the nape of its neck and threw it towards the precipice. The wolf fell off the edge with a cry, vanishing into the shadows. The wolves that were left hesitated, but Ronan didn’t allow them a chance to regroup. Using a final burst of energy, he pushed the remaining rogue off the edge, causing it to fall to the ground.

Silence fell over the forest, disturbed only by Ronan’s heavy breathing.

Sadie collapsed to her knees, exhausted. “What... what just happened?”

Ronan wiped the blood from his arm, his expression grim. “You were their main target, Sadie. And this is only the start; it’s going to get worse..”

Sadie’s stomach knotted with fear. “Why me? What do they want from me?”

Ronan’s eyes darkened. “Because you’re special. You are not just any wolf, Sadie. You have something they want. Something that could change everything.”

Sadie’s heart beat fast. “What do you mean by that? What are you talking about?”

Ronan took a step closer, his gaze intense. “There’s a rare trait in your bloodline. A trait that makes you more powerful than you can imagine. The Alpha King knows this, and he’ll stop at nothing to get to you.”

Sadie’s mind reeled. “Why am I not aware of this?”

“You weren’t meant to find out about this,” Ronan said quietly. “But now, there’s no reason to keep it a secret.” You’re coming with me to Northbrook, where you’ll be safe. At least, for now.”

Sadie gazed at him, feeling her world spiral out of control. All her beliefs were falling apart, with no possibility of reversing the situation.

“Let’s get going,” Ronan said, glancing at the trail ahead of them. “We don’t have much time,” he added.”
