Chapter1 : The beginning
Nostalgia ripples through me, l know am in trouble the moment l see the man across the street presumably to become my new neighbor
I nearly stumble over my bags as I pull them from my old Porsche, cursing under my breath as heat rushes to my cheeks.
I can’t take my eyes off him. All l can see now is nothing but perfection as he continues standing on his porch, mowing the lawn in nothing but a pair of low-hung shorts, sweat glistening on his muscles, rippling beneath his sun-kissed skin.
Each flex and contraction feels like a hypnotic dance, warping the very fabric of reality around me.
l catch myself glancing at him again—he seems a bit older, yet there’s an undeniable pull. I know I shouldn’t let myself be so captivated by a stranger, but there’s something about him that has me hooked.
I wonder how it would feel to surrender to that magnetic energy, to feel his hands on me, those plush lips exploring every inch of my skin.
But then reality hits. What am I doing? I’ve never been the type to let such thoughts consume me. I pride myself on being a decent girl, someone who stays grounded. Why am I allowing this wildness to creep in?
I shake my head, trying to clear my mind. Instead, I focus on my new home, the fresh start that awaits me. everything is as l had imagine more than my say dream ,
The house is beautiful, nestled in the deep opulent neighborhood of Oakwood heights with tree-lined streets and manicured lawns.
The driveway is wide and inviting, leading up to a grand entrance that feels like a promise of new beginnings.
I take a deep breath, reminding myself to channel my energy into settling in, creating a space that reflects who I am. Perhaps it’s time to put my thoughts of strangers aside and embrace the adventure of making this house my home.
After all this was the infamous picture perfect of Oakwood heights a neighborhood for the very wealthy , charming and elite of our society , one would wonder how an average girl like me got such an opportunity but well that’s a story for another day ,
The manicured lawns glistening under the sun, and charming smiles greeting me from every porch seem to be a sneak peek into a fairytale, but no wonder somewhere l just feel beneath the surface, whispers of secrets swirl like autumn leaves caught in a gust of wind.
This place feels too polished, too perfect and in its stillness l can almost hear the echoes of my past a distant reminder of the chaos l left behind. An unsettling feeling immediately coiling in my stomach
In the blazing heat of the afternoon sun, my gaze yet again is inexplicably drawn to the man across the street.
He’s a stranger, yet he feels hauntingly familiar a man capable of shattering any illusion with fire.
His presence commands attention and danger at the same time. There’s an electric charge in the air, and I can’t help but stare and feel increasing attracted to him.
I tell myself to look away, to focus on the mundane tasks of settling into my new home, but I’m rooted yet again to the spot but this time behind my old porche parked in the driveway. My heart races, a wild drumbeat echoing in my ears.
The stranger is nothing but the perfect embodiment of temptation. He’s the kind of man who makes you forget your own name.
Oak wood heights is going to be interesting l silent whisper to my self carefully studying how his perfectly chiseled physique seems carved from the gods, with broad shoulders and razor-sharp abs that speak of strength and danger.
Dark hair is tousled just enough to hint at rebellion, framing a face destined for billboards framing His piercing blue eyes sparkle with mischief, daring me to take a step closer.
I couldn’t help but stare, utterly captivated a feeling l didn'twant to end .
His smile as he waved to a passerby was clearly a slow sultry of lips that promises sin and redemption was disarming, and for a moment, everything else faded into a blur.
Just as I was about to gather my courage and approach him, my phone blared to life buzzing loudly in my pocket , shattering the spell instantly , jolting me back to reality. I fumbled with the bags, trying to dig it out. “Ugh, come on!” I muttered, finally pulling it free.
“Hey, it’s me! Did you make it okay?” Jenna’s voice crackled through the speaker, filled with her usual excitement, which was a refreshing contrast to the knot in my stomach.
“Yeah, I just got here. The place is… incredible,” I replied, still glancing at the man, who was now wiping his brow with the back of his hand, completely unaware of the effect he was having on me.
“Good! I knew you’d love it. But are you settled in? You know how I worry,” she said, her tone shifting slightly. I could hear the underlying concern, the echoes of our past creeping into the conversation.
“I’m working on it. Just trying to figure out where to put everything,” I said, trying to keep my voice light. I didn’t want to dive into the heavy stuff right now, not when everything felt so fresh and new.
“Okay, but remember what we talked about? Don’t let the past drag you down. You deserve this fresh start,” she reminded me gently.
“I know, I know. It’s just hard sometimes,” I sighed, my eyes drifting back to the man. He was now standing still, glancing over, and our eyes met for a heartbeat.
“Who is that?” Jenna asked, breaking my reverie.
“Just… a guy across the street,” I said, a small smile creeping onto my face despite myself.
“A guy? Girl, you’re already eyeing the neighbors?” she teased, laughter bubbling on the other end.
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves!” I laughed, but my heart raced as I watched him turn back to his work, the mundane task suddenly charged with something electric.
“I’m just saying, you’ve got to make the most of this new life! And I’m here for all the drama, promise,” she added, her enthusiasm infectious.
“Thanks, Jenna. I’ll keep you posted,” I said, my mind still half on her words and half on the mesmerizing stranger across the street whose presence kept pulling me in like a month drawn to fire .
“Alright, call me later! And don’t forget to unpack those boxes—no hiding!” she called before hanging up.
With a sigh, I tucked my phone away, stealing one last glance at the man. Maybe this neighborhood held more surprises than I’d anticipated. I silently thought as l began lifting up my heavy bags inside
When l see two women approaching from the side work maybe l must greet them after all we are going to be neighbors but to my dismay they seemed so lost to their hushed conversation, but audible for me to catch little bit of snippets , their voices dripping with envy and curiosity.
“Have you seen Mr. Smith lately?” one of them whispered. She was tall and lean, with a model’s body and eyes that sparkled with a mix of curiosity and admiration. Her gaze flicked toward the man who had me already captivated by his demeanor
“I swear he’s gotten even more handsome,” replied another woman, her voice laced with wistfulness. She was older, perhaps in her mid-forties, with long dark hair that framed her face like a halo. “But, of course, what can you do? He’s taken.”
Taken. The word echoes in my mind like a warning bell, crumbling the castles I’ve built in the air in just those few moments of seeing him. Sending my eyes wide with shock and my mouth ajar but stranger rather not stilling the unholy feelings stirring from deep within the pit of my stomach.
“Married to that lovely Sarah who is just nothing but a true embodiment of grace and kindness,” the leaner one continued, her tone dripping with a mix of admiration and a bit of jealousy. “They seem like the perfect couple, don’t them, Susan?”
“Perfect?” Susan snorted, skepticism woven into her voice. “Please, Jess. I’ve seen the way he looks at other women. He’s got a roving eye, that one.”
My heart skipped a beat. John Smith, the man who had captivated my every thought, was married. This was a huge chunk of meal to digest
“Shame, really,” Jess sighed, shaking her head. “Some women just can’t resist him. I’ve heard rumors of... indiscretions.’’
Their laughter send a shiver down my spine what was happening to my life did l just jump from a frying pan into the fire , making me feel like an outsider, privy to secrets I had no right to know. As I walked away toward the entrance of my new modern house, their words lingered in the air: Married. Taken. Indiscretions. I muttered to myself, “Control, Avaline,” though control was the last thing I felt in that moment.
These past few days in Oakwood Heights have been a whirlwind of trying to settle in , adjusting a hectic work schedule and trying to avoid trouble especially after having leaving behind a tumultuous chapter in my lifeand a shattered sense of self ,I’m hoping for a fresh start. Oakwood Heights is supposed to be my sanctuary, yet here I am, entranced by a man I know I shouldn’t want.
The local café, Café Serendipity, has become my refuge amidst the unfamiliarity of Oakwood heights. I step inside, inhaling the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. This place, with its cozy corners and warm lighting, feels like home especially after a long rough day at work like today, I decide to blow off some steam before heading back to my empty house.
But as I wait in line, my heart drops as the world around me freezes as l notice him Mr. Smith , the married man who had my whole being already conquered and the walls l had built around my heart already crumblingstanding by the café window, his piercing blue eyes scanning the room until they lock onto mine. . The air around me thickens, heavy with unspoken tension.
“Avaline,” he says, his deep voice wrapping around me like silk, sending shivers down my spine.
I hadn’t expected him to know my name as no formal introductions between us have been made yet, but I guess the rumors about this neighborhood are true everyone knows everyone.
“Mr. Smith,” I reply, trying to sound casual masking every bit of feeling threatening to erupt from me, though my heart races in my chest.
As I order my coffee, he steps closer, the heat of his presence making my skin prickle. The silence between us grows, but it’s not uncomfortable; it’s electric, strangely filled with the weight of unacknowledged desire.
“How do you like Oakwood Heights?” he asks, his smile disarmingly charming yet there was a glint of something darker in his eyes.
“It’s… perfect,” I say, echoing the neighborhood women’s words, trying to downplay my excitement about living here.
Mr. Smith’s eyes crinkle at the corners. “Perfect? That’s a rare opinion.”
A hidden meaning lingers in his words, but before I can respond, he continues. “My family would love to have you over for dinner. My wife, Sarah, has been wanting to welcome you to the neighborhood.” His voice is low and inviting.
My heart skips again. Dinner. At his house. With his wife. Reality is surely cruel; what else could I have expected? ,
“Sarah’s been wanting to meet you,” he adds, his voice low and inviting. “But she’s been busy with the kids.”
The mention of his wife stung like ice water, but I pushed aside the guilt clawing at my insides. “I’d love to,” I found myself saying, my heart racing, and a whirlwind of conflicting emotions churning within me.
Mr. Smith’s gaze lingers on mine longer than usual, as if I’m a work of art he’s intrigued by. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he’s being flirtatious.
“Soon,” he whispers, a dangerous smirk playing on his lips, his eyes burning with intensity.
As we receive our orders, he hands me my coffee, his long fingers slightly brushing against mine, sending jolts of electricity rippling through me, awakening feelings I thought long buried.
And just like that, he turns and leaves, a storm of emotions swirling inside me. I watch him walk away, my heart pounding against my ribcage, and in that moment, I know I’m in deep trouble.
What have I just done?
But as I take a sip of my coffee, I notice a folded piece of paper lying on the counter where he stood. My pulse quickens. What if it’s a note? I glance around the café, then quickly reach for it, my fingers trembling as I unfold it.
The words scrawled inside are simple, yet they send a chill down my spine:
“Meet me tonight. Alone. - J.”
And just like that, my world tilts on its axis.
