Beijing...
After doing his workout and sitting longer on the carpet resting, he stood up slowly, removed his clothes, and headed to the bathroom. He spent some time showering with fragrant soaps and shower gels, filling the room with a pleasant aroma. Wearing a bathrobe, he stepped out, drying his soft black hair with a small towel. Standing by the mirror, he picked up his lotions and applied them carefully. Finishing up, he took his hair products and began combing his hair. He opened his closet and took out the well-ironed clothes hanging there. He put on a white undershirt and, within just seven minutes, he was fully dressed. Picking up his silver MAD Paris Audemars wristwatch from Channel, he slipped it on and headed to the shoe rack, grabbing a pair of black cover shoes also by Chanel.
Sitting at the edge of his large bed, he put on black socks and then the shoes.
Throughout all of this, his mood seemed low. Standing up, he tucked in his white long-sleeved and fastened his belt, cover it with dark navy suit, he picked up his phone and long long black robe, and walked to the mirror to spray on some cologne before heading out the door.
This was Chief Wang Yibo, a certified General Counsel (GC). He walked gracefully through the vast compound as if he didn’t even want to touch the ground. It felt like he had been away from his home for years, though it had only been five weeks in Egypt. He went straight to his mother’s part of the house. The living room was empty, filled only with the pleasant aroma of food cooking in the kitchen. He approached the living room and knocked, calling out in his soft voice, “Mumy, are you inside?” She responded as she came out of her bedroom. Sitting down on the couch, he greeted her, “Good morning, Mumy.” She gave a small smile, glancing at the clock, and said, “You're running late; it’s already past seven. Is it the fatigue?” Running a hand through his soft hair, he replied, “I slept with a headache last night, Mumy. I’m exhausted.” She asked, “Didn’t I give you medicine? You didn’t take it?” He answered quietly, “I did.” She said, “Alright, come on, let’s get breakfast, and then you can take some more. Don’t be late.”
He stood up and followed her back to the living room, asking, “Where are Xia and the others?” She replied, “They’ve gone to school.” She set his breakfast on the dining table and made him a cup of coffee. She then returned to the living room to fetch his medicine.
Before she came back, he had already finished his coffee, knowing she wouldn’t make it too hot, as he doesn’t like hot drinks. She stood by him as he took the medicine, and then he got up, saying, “Mumy, I need to go. I’m almost late.”
She responded, “Alright, but go greet everyone in the house; you haven’t since you got back.” His eyes widened, but he said nothing, even though it was clear he didn’t want to. She followed him to the door, making sure he would go greet everyone.
He headed to Rong Xin’s section, opened the door, and knocked. He found her sitting in the main living room, eating breakfast. Sitting down, he said, “Good morning.” She glanced at him and replied, “Welcome back, Mr. Egypt. Finally decided to stop by and greet us?” He said nothing and soon got up, saying, “I’m off to work,” before leaving. She watched him go with an expression that was hard to read before smiling slightly and resuming her breakfast.
He next went to Yun Qing’s section, finding her loudly scolding the maids as if she was about to strike them. Her daughter, Yan, lay nearby, scrolling on her phone. He stopped by the door and bowed, greeting her, but she shot him a glare, saying, “Oh, Yibo, you’re greeting me from the door, is this how you greets your own mother? How disrespectful. And only now you remember we exist in this house?”
He frowned, which only seemed to highlight his handsomeness. She clicked her tongue, ignoring him as she continued her tirade against the maids. He turned and left, heading to the parking lot, where he selected a car and drove out of the compound.
Today at work had been exhausting for Chief Yibo; he was still worn out from yesterday's journey.
At five o'clock, he finally got home, spending some time sitting in his car while using his phone. Noticing another car entering the compound, he turned off his engine, stepped out, and locked the door, heading toward his section. His stepsister Yan was close behind, watching him with a soft tone, “Yibo ge, you’re back?” He turned slightly without stopping, glanced at her, then looked away, continuing to walk as he said, “Yes.” Without further words, he entered his balcony.
Above, he heard laughter and looked up to see Shu sitting on her balcony with her MacBook, chewing gum. She shrugged dismissively, muttering, “Not impressed.” Ming turned and headed to her section, fuming as though she could burst into flames. Yan chuckled, locking the car and following her.
Yibo went straight to his room, removed his uniform, and took a shower. Once dressed in casual clothes—a black jeans and blue polo shirt—his mind drifted to his mother. Picking up his phone, he went to her section of the house. He found her seated in the living room with his younger sisters, Xiu and Jia. Sitting next to her, he gave her a side hug, lying against her and, in a soft, slightly spoiled tone, said, “Mumy, I’m back.”
Xiu and Jia exchanged a glance, rolling their eyes simultaneously. His mother smiled, turning away, saying, “Welcome! Your food’s on the dining table, and your sisters are watching you.” He chuckled, saying, “So what?” His sisters greeted him together, and Xiu teased, “Where’s our gift, Bo ge?”
He stood up and went to the dining room, replying, “I went for work, not a holiday.” He found three types of dishes prepared, so he began with the chicken stew. When he finished, he stayed at the dining table, scrolling on his phone. Seeing it was almost six, he got up and returned to the living room, telling his mom he’d be visiting his friend, Cho Seungyoun. She said, “Instead of resting, with your headache, Yibo?”
He shook his head, saying, “Mumy, I won’t be gone long.” She sighed, “Alright then, take care!” Back in his section, he changed into a white shirt and blue jeans, grabbed his car keys, sprayed on cologne, and left for the parking lot, taking his car out of the driveway.
***
He slowed his car upon noticing a crowd by the roadside. Many cars were parked there, with people out and gathered, all trying to see what had drawn the attention. He drove to the edge, suspecting an accident, as none of the people appeared to be helping... just watching.
Exiting his car, he pushed through the crowd, hearing shouts and cries. In the center, he saw a tall slim young man seated, holding a ten-year-old boy and beating him furiously, blood streaming from the young man forehead. The young man’s ragged red shirt and black pants were filthy. Two other men were trying to separate him from the boy, who was screaming, but he held on too tightly.
Quickly stepping forward, Yibo grabbed the young man’s hair and pulled him back. The man shouted from the force, as Yibo didn’t hold back. Still, he refused to let go of the boy, so Yibo tightened his grip, and the man finally released him with a scream.
The two men took the boy away, who looked near fainting from pain.
The young man then tried to grab Yibo, who quickly twisted his arms behind his back.
Seeing the struggle, Yibo called out to the men nearby, asking for a rope, and they ran off to find one. An older woman in the crowd explained, “This Mad young man’s been in the neighborhood for a year now, but he’s never done this before. The kids must’ve been harassing him.” Another woman joined in, “If they hadn’t provoked him, he wouldn’t have reacted. I actually feel bad for him.” People around began expressing their opinions, some in sympathy.
Holding the man’s hands behind him, Yibo noticed he had lowered his head, tears flowing down his face. Yibo’s shirt was already stained from the struggle. The men returned with a large rope, and with their help, he tied the man’s hands and feet. It wasn’t easy, as the man put up a fight, surprising Yibo with his strength. When they finished, Yibo stepped back, watching to see if he’d break free. Tears continued streaming down his face, softening Yibo’s heart. Looking at the men, he asked, “Can you help me put him in my car? I’ll take him to get his forehead checked.” The older woman from earlier shouted, “Where do you think you’re taking him? Who are you, and what neighborhood are you from?” The crowd began murmuring, some eyeing him suspiciously. Yibo stayed silent, sighed, and turned back to his car, ignoring the remarks. They watched him go, some muttering about his perceived lack of respect.
Yibo returned to his car, started it, and drove away as the crowd slowly dispersed, each person sharing their thoughts on the incident. An old man eventually came over, untying the young man, who didn’t even lift his head to look at him before walking away.
Yibo parked his car outside Cho Seungyoun's house and went inside. In the living room, he found Seungyoun’s sister, Li Na, sitting with her two friends. Yibo walked in with his confident stride, but Li Na pretended not to notice him and continued chatting with her friends.
Her friends greeted him, watching him with interest... Captain Yibo was the kind of man who didn’t even glance at people he wasn’t interested in. He returned their greetings without looking at them and then asked Li Na, "Is your brother home?"
Without looking at him, she replied with a pout, "I don’t know." Yibo pulled out his phone and called Seungyoun. Her two friends couldn’t stop staring at him. When Seungyoun answered, Yibo asked, "Are you at home?" "Yeah, are you coming?" Seungyoun replied.
Yibo cast a quick glance at Li Na, then ended the call and headed to Seungyoun’s room. One of Li Na's friends sighed, "Wow, Li Na, who is he? He’s so handsome. Please, set me up with him. Please, I’m begging!"
Li Na scoffed and replied with a mocking laugh, "Listen, that guy is the one I used to chase back in the day. I loved him like my life, but he looked me in the eyes and told me he didn’t feel the same. I cried my heart out that day. I even lowered my pride to tell him I loved him."
Her friends stared at her, shocked. The second friend asked, "Oh no, what’s your connection to him? Is he your cousin or something?"
Li Na scoffed and picked up her drink, sipping it nonchalantly.
When Yibo entered Seungyoun's room, he found him working on his laptop, thin white glasses perched on his nose as he typed away. Seungyoun glanced up and said, "Hmm! Our great GC Yibo, you’ve gotten even more handsome...you look like an Egyptian now."
Yibo shrugged and sat down on the large bed. "You never change," he said.
Seungyoun smiled, closed his laptop, turned to face him, and said, "I missed you a lot, friend. I’m glad you’re back."
Yibo rubbed his head. "You make it sound so serious."
Seungyoun looked at the white shirt Yibo was wearing and exclaimed, "Wait! Did you get hurt, Chief?"
Yibo quickly glanced down at his shirt, noticing a bloodstain on the side. Seungyoun jumped up, "What’s that? The shirt even looks dirty now."
Yibo shook his head and began unbuttoning his shirt. "It was some crazy old teenage guy."
Seungyoun’s eyes widened. "A crazy guy?"
"Yeah!" Yibo replied and then told him about what had happened on his way there.
Seungyoun shook his head and said, "Poor guy. But really, what possessed you to hold onto a mad person?"
Yibo didn’t answer, instead getting up and heading to the bathroom. After showering, he emerged wearing one of Seungyoun’s bathrobes, dried himself off, and changed into some of Seungyoun’s clothes from the wardrobe.
Around six, Yibo told Seungyoun he was going to head home. Seungyoun protested, "Come on, friend. Won’t you come with me to see Zi? Please, I don’t even know what I’d say without you. And Mom’s mad at me—just escort me, please. I was just waiting for you to get back so we could go together."
Yibo smiled slightly. "Alright, but let me call my Mumy so she doesn’t worry."
At eight, they finally left the house after Yibo greeted Seungyoun’s Mom goodbye. They drove in Yibo’s car, with Seungyoun at the wheel. As they rode, Seungyoun noticed Yibo staring out the window. Just as he was about to speak, Yibo interrupted, "Dr., stop here for a moment. Let me see if they untied him. It would be good if they did." Seungyoun watched him for a moment, shrugged, and pulled over. Yibo got out of the car and approached a young man sitting by the roadside, holding a black plastic bag. Crossing his arms, Yibo watched him until Seungyoun came over and said, "Let's move on, Chief. They’ve already untied him free."
Chief Yibo turned back to the car, and they continued on. When they reached Zi’s house, Seungyoun called her with the number his Mom had given him. Her sister came out to welcome them, showed them into the living room, and served them drinks. A moment later, Zi’s mother came out to greet them briefly before leaving them alone.
It wasn’t long before Zi appeared, wearing a long dress with stone blue and gold accents. She was stunning, and her perfume filled the room as she sat down. Seungyoun glanced at Yibo, who looked back at him, and they exchanged glances. When Seungyoun didn’t speak, Yibo cleared his throat and said, "Good evening miss."
Zi responded without looking at them. Yibo nudged Seungyoun to say something, and he leaned in, whispering, "What am I supposed to say to her, please?"
Yibo couldn’t hold back his laughter, and Seungyoun soon joined him. They laughed together like they’d lost their minds before finally calming down. Yibo, still smiling, looked at Zi and said, "Um… actually, his Mom asked me to bring Seungyoun here to see you. So, here we are."
Seungyoun added, "Yes, Mom said I should come to see you, so he brought me."
Zi didn’t respond, simply standing and saying, "See you later," before heading upstairs, leaving them standing in the living room.
They continued laughing in the car as they drove away, and when Yibo finally dropped Seungyoun off at home, they parted ways, and Yibo took the driver’s seat, driving off down the street.
Yibo parked the car where he last saw the stranger and looked around to spot him, but not seeing him, he headed home.
As he waited for the guards to open the gate, he got a call from his Mumy. He drove in, parked in the lot, and then walked inside. Seeing his dad's car made him check his watch... it was nearly ten. He headed to the living room, where he found his Mumy on the phone, her arms crossed.
Smiling, he said, "I'm back, Mumy." She frowned and asked, "Where have you been, Yibo?" Scratching his head, he replied, "I told you, Mumy, I was at Cho Seungyoun's. I went with him to see his girlfriend." He grinned as he finished.
She rolled her eyes and said, "Oh, really? How noble of you." He laughed, then put on a serious face. "Actually, we had a meaningful conversation. He was too shy to talk, so I had to step in."
His Mumy chuckled and said, "Oh, you must’ve scared her off then, with your big talk." He laughed, giving her a side hug. "Come on, Mumy. I’m great at talking!" She smiled and said, "Your dad wants to see you." He released her and said, "Alright, Mumy."
He walked toward his dad’s section of the house. Entering the main room, he found his dad watching the news while snacking on a fruit salad at the small table in front of him. Rong was sitting beside him, and his three stepsisters were also in the living room. Yibo sat down on the soft rug, looked at his dad, and said, "Good evening, Dad."
His dad nodded. "Good evening. Where have you been? Weren’t you supposed to be on duty?" Yibo replied, "I was at Cho Seungyoun's, Dad." He then turned to Rong, saying, "Good evening, Aunty." She gave a small smile that didn’t reach her eyes and said, "Good evening. How’s work?" "Perfect," he replied.
Just then, Ming walked in, holding a bowl of sliced watermelon, which she set down near Dad. She took a seat and glanced at Yibo, who was focused on the TV. "Good evening, Gege," she greeted him. He replied without looking at her, while Rong watched him out of the corner of her eye.
Yibo finally stood up and said, "Good night, Dad." His dad nodded. "Yibo, give Ming twenty thousand. She needs it for school tomorrow." He nodded. "Alright, Dad." He said good night to Rong and his siblings, then left the room, feeling irritated. Ming got up and followed him, but he didn’t see his Mumy in the living room, so he headed to her bedroom, where she was already lying down.
Sitting at her bedside, he said, "Going to bed, Mumy?"
She looked at him and asked, "You’re done already?" He nodded. "Yeah, Mumy." He kissed her forehead. "Good night, Mumy. I’m off to bed." She smiled. "Good night, Son. Make sure to rest well." He nodded. "I will, Mumy." He stood up, turned off her lights, and gently closed the door.
Peeking into his sisters' room, he saw Jia on her phone while Xiu was already asleep. He quietly closed the door and returned to the living room, where he found Ming waiting for him. He was surprised she wasn't wearing the top robe she'd worn when she entered Dad's room earlier. Avoiding her gaze, he walked out, and she stood up to follow him.
When he reached his area, he turned around and saw her trying to enter. "Wait here, please," he said firmly. He closed the door behind him. She frowned, then sighed and opened the door anyway. Not finding him in the living room, she made her way to his bedroom. As he came out with cash in hand, they almost collided.
He glared at her and snapped, "Are you insane, following me in here?" She looked at him without a word as he rolled his eyes, pushed past her, and stormed into the living room, throwing the cash onto the table. Heading for the door, he opened it and ordered, "Leave. Now."
Ming sighed, picked up the money, and left. He locked the door behind her, seething with irritation.
That night, he couldn’t sleep. Every time he turned over, thoughts of the stranger old teenage man plagued his mind, making him uneasy. He knew he hadn’t done anything wrong, just helped a kid out, but the man’s image haunted him. Finally, he got up and went to the bathroom.
Sleep finally came around three-thirty.
At dawn, the rain poured heavily. Yibo took a hot shower—he couldn’t stand the cold—and dressed in his serious colored suit and lawyers robe, grabbing his raincoat. He checked his pockets for his phones, put on his raincoat and cap, and walked over to his Mumy’s side of the house. Removing his raincoat at the balcony, he entered.
She was in the kitchen with the housekeeper and Xiu, preparing breakfast. He greeted her, and she replied, "Did you sleep well? How’s the rain?"
"I’m fine, Mumy," he said. Xiu looked up at him. "Good morning, Bo Ge." "Morning," he replied, leaving the kitchen. With his Mumy urging him not to be late for work, he only had coffee and an egg. She walked him to the balcony and asked, "Aren't you going to say good morning to your dad's family?" He frowned a little. "I’m running late, Mumy." "Alright then. Take care," she said. He nodded. "I will."
At the same time, Shu, carrying an umbrella and ready for school, walked beside him. Without a glance, he got into his car, started it, and honked as the gate opened, driving off without looking back.
He drove slowly and stopped near where he last saw the stranger, parking on the roadside and scanning the area. His eyes finally landed on the man, sitting there in the rain, head tucked between his knees, completely drenched. It seemed he hadn’t left the spot since the rain started. Yibo leaned back in his seat, watching the man, his heart sinking. He finally forced himself to drive away, knowing he was wasting time.
Yibo was naturally empathetic, with a soft heart, almost like a woman’s. By the time he reached the office, his coworkers noticed he was unusually quiet and asked if he was alright. He told them he wasn’t feeling well.
Around five, he left work, driving without his usual energy. This time, he took a different route, avoiding where he’d seen the man earlier.
When he got home, he parked halfheartedly, walked to his Mumy’s part of the house, and lay down on the long couch, closing his eyes. She emerged from the kitchen and asked, "Yibo, are you alright?" Seeing he didn’t respond, she came closer and said, "Yibo!" He opened his eyes, sat up, and held his head. She placed a hand on his shoulder, visibly worried. "Are you unwell?" she asked. He closed his eyes and leaned into her. "It’s just a headache, Mumy ."
"Eat something, and then we’ll go to the hospital," she insisted, but he quickly replied, "No, Mumy. I’ll just take some medicine." She frowned, "You keep taking medicine, but it never helps. Do you want me to tell your dad about this?" He stayed silent as she went to the dining area, returning with food and coffee. Despite having no appetite, he ate to ease her worries.
After finishing, she said, "Go change, and we’ll go to the hospital." He reluctantly agreed and headed to his part of the house. He took a quick shower, changed into casual clothes, and lay down, thinking of an excuse to avoid the hospital visit. An idea hit him, and he grabbed his phone, heading back to her side of the house.
He found her ready to go, waiting for him in the living room. Smiling, he said, "Mumy, Seungyoun just called. I told him I wasn’t feeling well, so he insisted I come over so he could check on me." She shot him a skeptical look. "Oh, really? You just want to go chat. My friend, let's go to the hospital instead." Giving her a pleading look, he hugged her and said, "Come on, Mumy. He’s a doctor! He’d feel bad if I didn’t go. Please?"
