You may find a huge percentage of readers may not identify with Maori culture, leaving the Haka in the first chapter a trifle distracting. Better maybe to reduce that and describe it in more detail. Being of a supernatural nature the plot is anybody’s and could go any way and you did well taking down the path you did.
