Prologue
She stood there in the middle of the road, staring at the black fog that was beginning to pick up speed towards her. Quickly, she looked over at her parents grabbing objects that appeared to be guns. She looked to the left of her and saw her cousin standing next to her as her friend’s parents were doing the same thing. “What’s happening?” She quietly whispered to her friend. “I don’t know, but I am scared!” Her friend grabbed hold of her arm, trying to muster up any courage that a ten-year-old could.
Their parents joined their sides as a man walked up to their parents. “Take Trinity and Destiny somewhere safe. This doesn’t look good.” Trinity’s father spoke sternly to the man who they considered family. “Do it!” Her father barked at the man. “You promise me, you keep them safe, Eric!” Destiny’s mother spoke up and Eric nodded. “As if they were my daughters.”
“Good, go then!” The girls’ parents were about to walk up to their children when suddenly the black fog was upon them. Trinity yelled out to her mother as she was enveloped by the fog. Everything was quiet until a shot sprang out, causing the rest of their parents to run toward Trinity’s mother’s gunshots.
Eric grabbed the girl’s hands and rushed to a nearby house. He slammed the door behind them and locked it. Taking his flannel shirt off to reveal a black t-shirt, he used the flannel shirt to clog underneath the door. Spinning around, he grabbed the girl’s arms again and rushed to a door that led to the basement. Eric hurried them inside and down the stairs, quickly speaking to them. “Stay here and cover all the cracks in the windows and under the doors. I will be right back!” Destiny stared at him. “No! They said you have to keep us safe!” “I have to help your parents! Now do what I say!” He quickly scurried out of the basement and the girls did as they were told.
They hid under the basement stairs jumping at every creak and moan the house made. All was darkness around them, then suddenly they noticed light peeking through the window. Trinity slowly stood up and started for the stairs. “No, Trinity! Wait.” Trinity motioned for her friend to quiet down and she climbed the stairs. She turned the doorknob and the door opened with a whoosh sound and bright light hit her.
