An emotional post-WWI journey
"In the Lion's Den took me on a journey that I wasn't expecting. Set in the aftermath of WWI, with flashbacks taking us back to pre-war England and Portugal, this is a winding journey through love, loss, loyalty, and grief. It's a romance, and a mystery, and a heavily introspective drama that will plunge you deep into the characters' hearts. I loved the love story of Ella and Pedro, how they clung to each other through thick and thin. I viscerally hated the villain, and cheered for the supporting cast. There were certain aspects that could have benefited from more development (more showing vs telling) - such as Ella's activities as a WWI nurse, or the criminal background of Luke's family - but these did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. The pacing is excellent throughout, and it kept me hooked - there was always a breath of fresh air after intense angsty episodes. And, bonus points if you're an avid commenter like me, the author is such a lovely person to interact with, I genuinely had a great time reading! Keep up the wonderful work! 💕"

"In the Lion’s Den is a beautifully written historical romance set in the aftermath of the First World War, and from the very first page, it immerses you completely in the era. The language, the atmosphere, the characters—every detail feels authentically grounded in its time. The characters are wonderfully complex and realistic, many of them morally grey, yet deeply likeable. What truly stood out to me was how the women were portrayed—each one strong in her own unique way. It’s rare and refreshing to see such diverse representations of strength, and it made the story all the more powerful. The plot weaves together suspense, heartbreak, and warmth, creating a gripping and emotional experience. At its core, it’s about fierce friendship evolving into love—and while friendship is a kind of love, this story shows how beautifully one can grow into the other. By the end, I was not only completely invested in the main characters, but also incredibly eager to read more about the side characters. Their stories promise just as much depth and emotion, and I can’t wait to dive into them!"

A rollercoaster of a ride
"This book is excellent. I’m a reader that doesn’t have much time to binge but Pedro and Ella’s saga thus far has been so well written at a pace that’s fast but full of adventure. The author does an amazing job building up the suspense in each chapter that drives you crazy not to know the next. Highly recommend for those who like historical fiction like pieces that are full of mystery and plots that aren’t ostentatious cliches. "

"*This review is in accordance with round 1 of the 2025 GEA Awards "Into the Lion's Den" is a historical romance and mystery that starts a little slow to jump in but once the plot starts rolling, it doesn't let up with action and mystery filling the scenes, ones that each work to move the overall plot forward. There are strong characters with clear personalities, like the opinionated Lady Agnes or the strong, inquisitive Ella and protective Pedro. Their voices and personalities are clear and consistent. Given this is dual-POV, the reader is transported into both Ella and Pedro's perspectives, creating extra tension as the story moves forward. It also creates some interesting plot choices by revealing some things early on that aren't usually in mystery novels, giving this one a way to stand out. I appreciated the author's use of older language/terms to help build the 1910's setting, making it more believable. While I haven't read a lot of historical novels, the mystery aspect captured my attention despite that, and I would recommend it to fans of the genres at hand or those looking at a great place to dip their toes in and try something new. Ella's struggles with finding her way can be relatable to readers going through similar times in their lives. There were some issues, like punctuation, that have been sent privately to the writer. All in all, a really solid start!"
