The Dress Fitting
KATY
My wedding was just a week away, and I could hardly contain my excitement. Every little detail had been carefully planned, but today felt different—today was special. Today, I was finally going to see myself in the dress. The Bentley glided to a stop in front of the designer boutique, and I could barely contain the rush of anticipation as I hopped out, my best friend Mia right behind me.
“Can you believe it?” I said, practically bouncing on my feet. “This time next week, I’ll be walking down the aisle!”
Mia nudged me playfully. “I know! But first, we need to make sure you’re walking down in the perfect dress.”
We both laughed, the giddiness between us undeniable. The boutique stood before us, grand and elegant, with soft golden light spilling from the windows. As soon as we stepped inside, I felt like I was entering another world. Rows of sparkling gowns greeted us, each one more beautiful than the last. I couldn’t help but let out a small gasp as I took it all in.
“This place is incredible,” Mia whispered, her voice filled with awe.
Before we could fully take in the beauty of the shop, a woman with polished poise approached us. Every step she took was graceful, as though she belonged in this world of luxury and elegance. She smiled warmly as she introduced herself.
“Welcome to All Woman Fashion Store. I’m Joyce, the manager, and this is Grace, one of our attendants,” she said, gesturing to a young woman standing beside her. Grace offered us a friendly smile, her arms elegantly clasped in front of her.
“Hi, Joyce! I’m Katy, and this is my best friend, Mia,” I said, my excitement practically spilling out in my words.
Joyce’s eyes lit up with recognition. “Ah, the bride herself! We’ve been expecting you. Let’s get started, shall we?”
I nodded eagerly, almost too eager. “I can’t wait!”
Joyce led us into the fitting area, which felt less like a changing room and more like a luxurious lounge. I was immediately drawn to the rows of dresses displayed before me—my choices from the online selection I’d made. They were all stunning, each one more breathtaking than I’d imagined. My heart fluttered at the sight of all the delicate lace, satin, and embroidery surrounding me.
“These are the ones you picked out,” Grace said with a smile. “But feel free to browse for others if you’d like. And don’t worry, your maid of honor can try on her dress once you’re done.” She winked at Mia, who grinned back.
Laughing, I turned to Mia. “Let’s do this!”
I slipped into the first dress, an A-line gown with intricate lace detailing, and stepped out. As I turned to Mia, my heart raced in anticipation of her reaction. But Mia’s lukewarm expression hit me like a cold splash of water.
“It’s... nice,” Mia said hesitantly.
I felt my shoulders slump in disappointment. “Just nice?”
Mia tilted her head, her gaze thoughtful as she tried to find the right words. “It’s pretty, but it doesn’t scream you. Let’s try another.”
I felt a pang of frustration but pushed it down as I turned back to the fitting room. Determined, I tried on the next gown. It was beautiful, but it was too extravagant, too much for what I had envisioned. The third one was elegant, but it didn’t feel special. By the time I was in the fourth dress, my excitement had waned.
Still, I couldn’t shake the thought of Tom. In just a few days, I would be marrying the man I loved. Our whirlwind romance had been nothing short of a fairytale. Eight months of dating, and he’d proposed with a dazzling ring that still left me breathless every time I looked at it. Despite the differences in our backgrounds—his privileged, wealthy upbringing and my self-made success as a skincare therapist and entrepreneur—our connection had been instant. We were perfect together.
Tom had been my rock throughout this whole wedding planning process. He went out of his way to ensure I had everything I needed, and his family had been incredibly supportive as well. Every time I thought about him, a sense of calm washed over me, even when the stress of wedding planning started to weigh on me. Just hearing his voice could make everything else fade into the background.
Lost in my thoughts, I barely noticed when Grace knocked on the door. “Ready for the next one?” she asked.
“Coming!” I called, quickly shaking myself out of my daydream.
As I stepped into the fifth dress, I could feel the room fall silent. Mia and Joyce both froze, their eyes wide as they looked me over. I felt a nervous flutter in my stomach.
“What?” I asked, anxiety creeping into my voice.
Mia’s eyes shimmered with tears as she whispered, “Katy, you look... perfect.”
Joyce nodded, her voice soft but certain. “This is it. This is the one.”
Mia walked up to me, taking my hand and guiding me toward the mirror. I gasped as my reflection met my eyes. The dress fit me like it was made just for me, hugging my figure in all the right places. The delicate lace and subtle shimmer gave me an ethereal glow, and I felt a tear escape from my eye.
“You look like a dream,” Mia whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
I turned to her, pulling her into a tight hug. “Thank you for being here,” I said, my voice cracking with gratitude.
We stood there, laughing through our tears, and I joked, “If I cry this much now, I’ll be a mess on the actual day!”
Joyce stepped forward to adjust my veil, and I couldn’t stop smiling. “You’ve found your dress, Katy,” she said softly. “It’s absolutely stunning.”
The rest of the fitting passed in a blur. Mia tried on a sleek, emerald-green gown that looked stunning on her, and we both reveled in the joy of the moment. Every laugh, every word of encouragement from Mia made me feel so lucky to have her by my side. Today wasn’t just about finding the perfect dress; it was about celebrating the friendships and love that made life beautiful.
By the time we left the boutique, the sun was setting, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink. The streets glowed under the evening light as we walked toward the car, the sound of our footsteps echoing in the quiet. The world felt peaceful, like everything was in its right place.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I smiled when I saw Tom’s name. “Hey, Tom!” I answered, my voice as bright as I felt.
But as soon as I heard his voice, my smile faltered. “Wait, what’s wrong?” I asked, my voice shifting to concern.
Mia leaned in, sensing the sudden change in my tone.
“Okay, I’ll be there soon,” I said, hanging up the phone.
Mia looked at me, her expression filled with worry. “What’s going on?”
“Tom needs me,” I replied, my voice tense. “It’s urgent.”
Mia frowned. “Do you want me to come with you?”
I shook my head, trying to stay calm. “No, I’ll handle it. But I’ll call you as soon as I know what’s going on.”
The car made sharp turns as it headed toward Blue Nile, a quiet, upscale neighborhood in town. My heart raced, my thoughts spinning. Was something wrong with the wedding plans? Had something happened to Tom’s family?
When the car finally pulled up to the spot, I stepped out, forcing myself to stay calm. I reassured Mia one last time before watching the car drive away down the street. Taking a deep breath, I turned toward the store ahead, but before I could take a step, I froze.
Tom was standing there, waiting for me. His face was unreadable, his posture stiff. My heart skipped a beat as I took in the sight of him standing there.
