Colton inches toward me, lightly fingering the cut on my neck and jabbing invisible needles right into my heart. “You okay?”
My brows shoot up. “I’m fine—thanks to you. But what the hell are you doing here? And how did you know where I was?”
A couple stumbles right into our little reunion party, shrieking bloody murder after seeing John on death’s doorstep at our feet.
Colton gently shushes them as if he wasn’t just beating the shit out of the guy and takes out his wallet. But it isn’t until he says, “It’s okay, folks. I’m the good guy,” that it registers he isn’t holding a wallet, but a badge.
Oh, God.
Wait, ew.
The couple hurries off to their car, seemingly placated by his governmental authority.
I sniff. “So you’re a sell-out now?”
Colton does something I haven’t seen him do in over twelve years. He smiles, heating up the marrow in my bones. And dammit, it feels really nice to see him like that considering how things ended between us.
“Your brother sent me,” he replies. “But I had my own selfish reasons for wanting to rescue you tonight.”
“I didn’t need rescuing.” I cross my arms. “And what do you mean by that?”
“Well,” he says, clapping his badge shut and tucking it into his back pocket. “I came to see if I could convince you to become a sell-out with me.”
