PROLOGUE

In the heart of ancient Egypt, where the Nile flowed like a lifeline through the desert, a humble fisherman named Menes Khepri lived on the fringes of civilization. He was known for building sturdy homes, but his fondness for wine often clouded his days and nights. Yet, beneath his simple life lay a yearning for something greater—a yearning he could barely acknowledge even to himself.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold and crimson, Menes pushed his small boat into the Nile’s gentle current. Fishing was his solace, the rhythmic lapping of water against wood a balm to his troubled soul. But this evening, destiny waited within the depths.

Upstream, chaos unfurled. A family fled the king’s soldiers, their breaths ragged with fear. The king, a tyrant bent on control, sought their son, a boy of ten with a gift that threatened his power. The child could conjure royal regalia from nothingness, sparing workers their toil and disrupting the king’s iron grip on his people.

The father, driven by desperation and love, fought the soldiers with all his might, allowing his wife and son to escape downriver. As their small boat bobbed toward Menes, the boy, wide-eyed with a mix of terror and awe, found comfort in a handful of wet sand. He kneaded it like clay, unaware of the transformation it would undergo.

As the sand shimmered and solidified, it slipped from the boy’s hands, vanishing into the Nile. Menes, oblivious to the magic beneath the water, hauled his catch onto the riverbank. Among the fish, one glowed with an unnatural light, its scales like polished gemstones.

Menes’ curiosity overpowered his usual stupor. He decided to cook the fish, drawn by an inexplicable urge. As the fish sizzled over the fire, the magical stone dissolved within it, infusing the flesh with an otherworldly energy. The first bite broke through Menes’ fog of intoxication, awakening him to a new reality.

He felt it before he saw it—the earth beneath him trembling, gold veins rising from the ground like serpents. In awe, he watched as the gold responded to his thoughts, swirling and shaping at his command. For the first time, Menes felt the weight of true power.

His mind raced with possibilities. Could he rebuild his life, transform the world around him? But fear tempered his newfound wonder. The palace he accidentally forged from gold stood as both a marvel and a beacon of danger.

Intent on fleeing, Menes packed his belongings, but a thief had witnessed the miraculous transformation. Driven by greed, the thief attacked, only to see his blade shatter against Menes’ diamond-like skin.

Stunned by his invulnerability, Menes faced the thief with a mixture of pity and resolve. A mere thought froze the stone in mid-air, and as Menes exhaled, a silver mist enveloped the thief, erasing him from existence.

Menes stood alone, the weight of his powers settling upon him. What he had once dreamed of now threatened to consume him. Yet, in the depths of his heart, a spark of hope flickered. Perhaps this gift was not a curse but a chance to rewrite his story—a chance to stand against the tyranny that had darkened his world.

Thus begins the tale of Menes, a fisherman turned bearer of magic, his journey entwined with the fate of a boy destined to challenge a king. In the quiet of the Nile, their story awaited the dawn.
