Chapter 1: The breaking Point
Rihanna had always believed that family was the strongest force in the world. Growing up, she thought of her parents, Ashley and Peter, as the perfect team. They worked together to create a life full of love, laughter, and dreams for their daughter. They werenāt perfect, but they had each otherāand to Rihanna, that was enough.
Ashley, a kind and hardworking woman, always put her family first. She worked long hours at a local store, often taking on multiple shifts, just to make ends meet. Her smile never wavered, and she took great pride in providing for her daughter and husband, even when the days were long, and the nights were short.
Peter, Rihannaās father, didnāt share the same work ethic. He had never really held a stable job, and most of his days were spent at home, doing very little to contribute to the family. While Ashley was out working hard to provide, Peter spent his time either watching TV or hanging out with his friends. At first, Rihanna didnāt understand the gravity of the situation. After all, her father was still present in the home, even if he wasnāt contributing financially. But as the years went by, the cracks in their familyās foundation began to show.
Ashley had always tried to make the best of things. She loved Peter, despite his lack of ambition, and she was determined to create a stable and loving environment for Rihanna. However, there was one thing Ashley couldnāt controlāthe pull of Peterās past. He had a family before Ashley, a wife, and a daughter named Sierra, from a relationship he had before they even met. Sierra was much older than Rihanna, and she had grown up with a very different set of values. Her relationship with her father was strained at best, and her own lifestyle was chaotic and rebellious. The two families had never truly meshed, and over time, it became clear that Peterās first family still held a special place in his heart.
Despite Ashleyās efforts to shield Rihanna from it, there was always an unspoken tension. Peter would often leave for hours, sometimes days, to visit Sierra or deal with things from his past. These absences never made sense to Rihanna, but her mother, in her infinite patience, would always explain that her father was ājust helping outā or ādealing with some old business.ā Rihanna didnāt question it. After all, her mother had always been the strong, reliable one in the family, and her fatherās behavior didnāt seem to affect the love they shared.
But as the years went by, it became harder for Ashley to hide the pain. She worked even harder to compensate for Peterās lack of effort, but it wasnāt enough. Rihanna began to sense the distance growing between her parents. It was subtle at firstājust little moments where her mother seemed sadder than usual, or when Peter would leave without any explanation. But then it became more apparent. Peterās absence grew longer, and when he was around, he was distant and distracted.
One evening, when Rihanna was just thirteen years old, things took a dramatic turn.
It started with a noteāan innocent-looking piece of paper tucked under the couch cushions. The note, however, was far from innocent. It was from Sierra. Rihannaās heart sank as she read the words. It was clear that her father and Sierra had been meeting behind Ashleyās back, something that neither Peter nor Sierra had ever mentioned to her or her mother. The note revealed that their meetings had been ongoing, and it was as if Peter was hiding parts of his life from Ashley, and ultimately, from Rihanna.
Rihannaās anger boiled over. She went to Ashley immediately and showed her the note, her voice trembling with a mix of hurt and disbelief.
āMom, look at this. Why didnāt you tell me?ā Rihanna asked, her voice breaking.
Ashleyās face went pale as she read the note. She sat down heavily on the couch, her hands shaking. Rihanna could see the pain in her motherās eyes. She had tried so hard to keep things together, to protect them both from the truth, but now it was impossible to ignore.
āRihanna, baby, I didnāt want you to know. I was trying to protect you,ā Ashley said softly, her voice filled with regret. āI never wanted you to feel the hurt Iāve been feeling.ā
The weight of the situation was too much. Rihanna had always believed her father was the pillar of their family, the one who kept everything together. But now, she saw him for what he really wasāa man too selfish and distant to understand the consequences of his actions.
Later that evening, Ashley confronted Peter. The argument was ugly. Peter, who had always been able to avoid confrontation by avoiding responsibility, was caught off guard. Instead of apologizing or trying to explain, he became defensive.
āYou wouldnāt understand, Ashley. Iāve been helping Sierra, she needs me,ā Peter said dismissively. āIām not the bad guy here.ā
Ashleyās heart broke as she listened to his words. She had been there for him, worked tirelessly to provide for their family, and yet, he had never truly been there for her. The realization that Peter didnāt value their family the way she did hit her like a ton of bricks.
āDo you think I donāt see it?ā Ashley said, her voice cold. āYouāve been running back to your first family, and Iām hereātrying to hold everything together on my own. You never even cared about this family. You donāt care about me or Rihanna. You never did!ā
Peter looked away, not meeting Ashleyās eyes. His silence spoke volumes.
āYouāre a mistake,ā Peter suddenly spat, his voice harsh. āYou and this whole life we built togetherāit's all a mistake. I should have never stayed. I should have gone back to my first family a long time ago.ā
The words cut deep. Rihannaās heart shattered as she heard her father, the man who was supposed to protect her, say that to her. āIām a mistake?ā she whispered, unable to process the depth of his cruelty.
Peter didnāt respond. Instead, he turned and left without another word, slamming the door behind him.
And just like that, Rihannaās familyāwhat was left of itāfell apart. There was no apology, no closure, just silence. The man who had once been the center of their world was gone, leaving only pain and confusion in his wake.
