A chance encounter

The grand hall pulsed with life, the atmosphere electric with the hum of chatter, clinking glasses, and the occasional burst of laughter. People in tailored suits and elegant dresses moved fluidly, mingling and networking as the event’s keynote speaker wrapped up their speech on the main stage.

Kanii stood near the back of the room, his hands in his pockets, observing the scene. Though his usual comfort zone was the solitude of his writing desk, tonight he found himself drawn to the vibrant energy of the gathering. He was here on assignment, tasked with covering the event for a literary blog he contributed to, but his thoughts were far from his job.

His eyes kept straying to her.

The photographer.

She moved through the crowd like a whisper, her presence subtle yet magnetic. Kanii had noticed her almost immediately when he arrived, her dark hair pulled into a loose bun and a camera slung over her shoulder. There was something about the quiet intensity in her gaze as she framed her shots, the way her fingers deftly adjusted the settings on her camera. She didn’t speak to anyone, her focus solely on capturing moments that others would overlook.

Her name, he would later learn, was Ny’alis.

Kanii wasn’t one to believe in love at first sight, but there was no denying the pull he felt toward her. He watched as she crouched near a group of speakers, angling her camera to capture a candid shot. She was meticulous, her movements almost poetic.

“You’re staring,” a voice teased beside him.

Kanii blinked, turning to see one of his colleagues smirking at him.

“Just admiring the craft,” he said, though his tone didn’t quite carry the casual indifference he’d hoped for.

“Sure you are,” the colleague replied with a chuckle before walking off.

Kanii shook his head, laughing softly to himself. Maybe he was staring, but it wasn’t just about admiration. There was something about her, something he couldn’t quite put into words.

Taking a deep breath, he decided to approach her. He wasn’t sure what he would say, but he couldn’t let the night end without at least trying.

Ny’alis adjusted her camera strap, her fingers brushing against the cool metal of the lens. The event had been bustling, the kind of chaos she thrived in. Photography wasn’t just her job—it was her escape. Through the lens, she could control how she saw the world, framing it in a way that made sense to her.

She was lining up a shot of the stage when she felt someone approach. Her heart quickened, not out of excitement but out of the familiar anxiety that came with being noticed.

“Hi,” the man said, his voice warm but tentative.

Ny’alis turned, her eyes meeting his for a brief moment before darting away. He was tall, his dark skin glowing under the event lights, and his smile was… genuine.

“Hi,” she replied softly, her voice barely audible over the noise of the crowd.

“I couldn’t help but notice your work,” he continued, gesturing toward her camera. “You have an incredible eye. You’re really capturing the energy of the night.”

Ny’alis blinked, unsure how to respond. Compliments always caught her off guard, especially from strangers. She nodded, murmuring a quick, “Thank you,” before looking back at her camera.

The man didn’t seem deterred. “Do you photograph events often?” he asked, his tone light and conversational.

“Sometimes,” she said, her fingers fidgeting with the camera strap. “It’s… just a job.”

Her response was clipped, but not intentionally. It was simply her way of keeping the conversation from delving into territory that felt too personal. She didn’t mean to be rude, but social interactions weren’t her strength.

“I’m Kanii, by the way,” he said, offering his name like an olive branch.

Ny’alis hesitated before responding. “Ny’alis,” she said finally, her voice soft.

“Ny’alis,” he repeated, as if savoring the sound. “That’s a beautiful name.”

Her lips curved into the faintest of smiles, but it was fleeting. She glanced over his shoulder, spotting another photo opportunity. “I should… get back to work,” she said, her tone apologetic but firm.

Before he could say anything else, she turned and disappeared into the crowd, leaving him standing there.

Kanii sighed, running a hand over his head. That hadn’t gone as he’d hoped. He wasn’t sure what he had expected, but her abrupt exit left him feeling both intrigued and frustrated.

He returned to his table, opening his laptop to jot down some notes for his article. But the words wouldn’t come. His thoughts were consumed by Ny’alis—her quiet demeanor, her graceful movements, the way her name lingered in his mind like a melody.

He glanced across the room, spotting her near the buffet table, her camera still in hand. She seemed lost in her own world, her focus entirely on her work.

Kanii leaned back in his chair, a small smile playing on his lips. She was a mystery, and he couldn’t help but want to unravel her.

As the night wore on, Ny’alis found herself stealing glances at Kanii. She didn’t know why, but there was something about him that drew her attention. He was different from the other men she’d encountered at events—polite, genuine, and strangely persistent.

She shook her head, brushing the thoughts aside. She didn’t have time for distractions. Her focus needed to remain on her work.

But as she packed up her equipment at the end of the night, she found herself lingering near the exit, her eyes darting toward Kanii’s table. He was engrossed in his laptop, his brow furrowed in concentration.

Before she could overthink it, she walked toward him, her steps hesitant but deliberate.

“Hey,” she said softly, catching his attention.

Kanii looked up, his eyes lighting up at the sight of her. “Hey.”

“I just wanted to say… it was nice meeting you,” she said, her words stumbling over themselves. “And… thanks for the kind words.”

Kanii smiled, his heart lifting. “The pleasure was all mine, Ny’alis. Maybe we’ll cross paths again sometime?”

“Maybe,” she said, her voice laced with uncertainty.

And with that, she turned and walked away, leaving him with a sense of hope he hadn’t expected to feel.

Kanii watched her leave, his mind racing with thoughts of her. She was unlike anyone he’d ever met—quiet yet captivating, guarded yet intriguing. He didn’t know what it was about her that drew him in, but he was determined to find out.

As he packed up his own things, he made a silent promise to himself. He didn’t believe in fate, but something about this night felt significant.

Sometimes, life brought people into your orbit for a reason. And Kanii was certain that Ny’alis had been brought into his for something extraordinary.
