Chapter One: Ready, Set, Nora

Leaving Colorado wasn’t a causal decision. Nora had been born and raised in that semi-suburban corner of the world—a place with just enough rustic charm to make her believe she lived in the sweet spot between rural backroads and chain restaurants. It was more than just her hometown; it was the anchoring backdrop to her life story: where she grew up, climbed the career ladder, got her first tattoo, became a mom, and celebrated many accomplishments, whether that be a few marriages or surviving more existential spirals than she’d ever want to confess—out loud, anyway.

No matter where Nora found herself in life, every other place was temporary. Colorado was always home. It was her safety net, her battleground, and her favorite excuse for standing still, even though she had never truly felt settled there. Her mother often said she was like a tumbleweed—always drifting from one place to the next, scattering ideas and gathering memories as she went. It was a fitting metaphor, really. No matter how long Nora planted herself in one place, she always felt the tug of somewhere else—a restless longing for a life she couldn’t quite articulate but instinctively knew she hadn’t yet discovered. So, when the chance to uproot came knocking again, Nora did what any rational dreamer would do—she accepted the job offer and slapped a ”For Sale" sign on the lawn the next morning.

The idea of downsizing, streamlining her chaos, and ditching the grind was downright intoxicating. But as her excitement swelled, something else began to tug at her spirit. This was not a temporary move. This was the move. Unable to describe the knowing sensation to anyone, Nora aimed the purpose of the move at professional growth; however, there was something else about this shift that was different.

Though the promise of career growth was alluring, the idea of uprooting and moving to a small town nestled near the 45th parallel seemed like a daunting leap. The thought of leaving behind the familiar hum of low-key suburban life for a quaint cottage in the midst of dense woods and countless lakes felt like standing at the edge of an unknown abyss, unsure if there was anything waiting below. Will it be serene and idyllic, or chaotic and untamed? The uncertainty sparked a sense of both fear and excitement in equal measure.

Despite their recent marriage, Nora and George were no strangers to the idea of starting over—after all, their ten years of dating had been a journey of reinvention in itself. From their first tentative connection, sparked by shared humor and deep conversations, to years of growing trust and love, they had already proven their commitment to navigating life’s complexities together. Their relationship had seen them through career changes, family struggles, and even moments of doubt, each challenge strengthening the bond they shared.

For a decade, they had been each other’s anchor and safe harbor, carving out a shared world built on respect, patience, and hope. The decision to marry wasn’t one of novelty but one of inevitability—a natural progression for two people who had spent years blending their lives and nurturing a partnership defined by resilience and understanding. They both knew it was just time to take that next step, much like now with their decision to leave Colorado.

Now, standing at the edge of another new beginning, Nora and George felt a familiar sense of excitement. The years they had spent building their love gave them confidence that they could face the unknown together. Relocating felt like a natural part of their fresh start—a chance to write a new chapter in a place free from old patterns and lingering memories. The prospect of simplifying their lives in the serene, lakeside tranquility of Northern Michigan wasn’t just enticing—it was an invitation to redefine their relationship and build a life uniquely their own.

One evening, as Nora and George sat in the living room surrounded by half-packed boxes and the chaos of two dogs playfully fighting over a tennis ball, George spoke up.

“You know,” he said, leaning back in his chair, “I never thought we’d leave Colorado.”

Nora leaned against the doorframe, a smirk playing at the corner of her mouth. “Says the man who’s been dreaming about a place with fewer neighbors and more trees since I met him.”

“True,” he admitted with a grin. “But dreaming about it and actually doing it are two different things. What if we hate it? What if I miss takeout food that isn’t two hours away?”

Nora laughed as she stole the last slice of pizza from the delivery box. “You’ll survive, babe. Besides, we both know this is what we need—a clean slate. New scenery, fewer distractions. Just us figuring out how to do this life thing together.”

George contemplates the idea of moving to the cottage, stroking his beard absentmindedly. The dark bristly hairs make a soft scratching noise as they rub against each other. He nods, his grin fading into a thoughtful expression. “I like that idea. Starting fresh with no baggage or comparisons from our pasts, just us.” He pauses, then gives her a playful look. “And a cottage in the middle of nowhere, where you can freely embrace your cinnamon and moon-water rituals.”

Nora rolled her eyes but smiled. “Exactly. And you can finally chop wood and pretend you’re in a lumberjack calendar.”

George quickly stood up, striking his best lumberjack pose with his on his hips, trying to look serious. “If you insist,” he shot back, trying to then adjust his baseball hat with an exaggerated flair. “And you shall receive the first autographed copy for your new office.”

Nora burst out in laughter, fluttering her eyes in a dramatic expression. “Oh, thank you, sir!

George quickly broke character and joined in the laughter. “Seriously, Nora. Everything is going to be ok. I know how quickly your excitement can turn into anxiety.” He pulled her in for a hug and kissed her on the the forehead. “I love you. Remember that when you start casing spells,” he joked, waving his left hand around in a wizzardly way.

Still, this move wasn’t just about their relationship either; for Nora, it was really about her release, even if she didn't know it yet. Beneath the weight of practicality and societal pressures, there was a version of her she’d kept locked away for too long. A spiritual side—one that felt deeply connected to the earth, the trees, and the stars—but had always been too afraid to explore fully. After all, what would people think? She could almost hear the whispers already: Nora’s gone full witchy-woods woman. But here’s the thing—Nora didn’t care anymore. Not really. The older she got, the more she realized that the people who mattered wouldn’t judge, and the people who judged didn’t matter. All in, moving up to Northern Michigan wasn’t just about expanding Nora's career goals or beginning the next chapter in her and George's relationship; it was about finally leaving behind the fear of being what she had always longed to be … herself.

As the evening wore on, Nora found herself drawn to the bedroom window, gazing out at the darkening sky as she got ready for bed. The town lights twinkled in the distance, a familiar sight she’d soon be leaving behind. She felt a strange mix of nostalgia and excitement bubbling up inside her.

“Hey,” George’s voice broke through her reverie. “What’s going on in that pretty head of yours?”

Nora turned, a soft smile playing on her lips. “Just thinking about... everything, I guess. This move, our new life, who we might become. Who we’re leaving behind...” Nora's voice trailed off.

George came to stand beside her, wrapping an arm around her waist. “Scared?”

“Terrified.” she admitted. “But also... free. Like I’m finally giving myself permission to be... me.”

George squeezed her gently, his warmth a comforting presence at her side. “That’s what I love about you, you know. Your courage. Most people would run from change like this, but you? You run towards it."

Nora leaned into him, grateful for his steady support. “It doesn’t always feel like courage,” she confessed. “Sometimes it feels like I’m just stumbling forward, hoping I don’t fall flat on my face.”

“Isn’t that what courage is, though?” George mused. “Moving forward even when you’re scared?”

Nora nodded, her gaze drifting back to the window. The sky had darkened completely now, and she could see the faint glimmer of stars peeking through the suburban pollution. Soon, she thought, those stars would be brighter than she’d ever seen them.
