Chapter 1: A Skeptic’s Mission

Emily Turner was fearless. Her blog, The Skeptical Explorer, thrived on her daring adventures into places most people would avoid. Whether it was abandoned houses, eerie forests, or crumbling mansions, Emily went in armed with nothing but a flashlight and a camera. Her goal? To prove once and for all that the supernatural was nothing but myth.

When she heard about Blackthorn Asylum, she knew she had found her next challenge. It was said to be one of the most haunted locations in the state. Built in the early 1900s, the asylum had a grim history of mistreatment, unexplained deaths, and patients who vanished without a trace. After its abrupt closure in 1953, it had become the stuff of nightmares—local legends spoke of disembodied screams, shadowy figures, and a vengeful spirit called The Nurse.

Emily wasn’t fazed. “It’s just another story,” she told herself, packing her bag with a camera, flashlight, and notebook.

She drove out alone, her car cutting through the dense woods. As the trees closed in, blocking out the sunlight, a chill settled over her. When the asylum came into view, she couldn’t help but pause.

The building was monstrous, its towering walls wrapped in ivy. The shattered windows seemed to watch her like empty eyes, and the air around it felt… wrong.

“Get a grip,” she muttered, shaking off the unease. “It’s just an old building.” She pushed the rusted gates open, the screech echoing unnervingly through the silence.
