Prologue

Liam and Ezra had been friends for as long as either could remember. Their connection started on the dusty basketball court in their quiet seaside town, where they’d spent countless afternoons passing the ball, trash-talking  each other, and arguing over fouls that didn’t matter.

Their bond deepened over the years. Liam, with his quiet, introspective nature, was the balance to Ezra’s charismatic and fiery energy. They were opposites in many ways, yet they fit together effortlessly, like puzzle pieces that completed a picture neither fully understood—until now.

It started subtly, a shift too quiet to pinpoint. Maybe it was the way Ezra always insisted on walking Liam home after their late-night hangouts, even when his own house was in the opposite direction. Or how Liam’s heart raced when Ezra threw an arm around his shoulder, laughing at some inside joke.

One night, under the vast expanse of stars, they sat on the hood of Ezra’s old car by the cliffs overlooking the ocean. They often came here to talk about everything and nothing. But tonight felt different.

Liam’s voice broke the silence. "Ezra, have you ever felt…like there's more to something than it seems?”

Ezra turned to look at him, his dark eyes reflecting the moonlight. “What do you mean?”

“I mean…us.” Liam’s voice faltered, but he pressed on. “Sometimes, I think about why we're so close. And I wonder if—” He hesitated, unsure if he could say the words aloud.

Ezra didn't let him finish. “If it's more than just friendship?” His voice was steady, but his hand trembled slightly as it brushed against Liam’s.

Liam nodded, afraid to meet Ezra’s gaze. “Yeah.”

The silence that followed felt like it stretched for hours, though it was only a few seconds. Finally, Ezra let out a nervous laugh. “You’re not the only one who’s thought about that.”

Liam’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with surprise. “Really?”

Ezra nodded. “Liam, you’re my best friend. And I don’t want to ruin that. But lately... I’ve realized that what I feel for you isn’t just friendship. It’s more.”

Relief and emotion surged through Liam. “Ezra, I feel the same.”

Ezra smiled, a mix of joy and vulnerability lighting up his face. “Then I guess we should stop pretending that it’s not there.”

Their hands intertwined, a quiet affirmation of something they both had been too afraid to name. And as the waves crashed against the rocks below, Liam opened his mouth to speak, but the words caught in his throat—Ezra’s gaze held in his, steady and searching, as he leaned closer, the space between them shrinking, until Liam’s breath hitched, unsure of what would happen next...
