Capítulo 1
–Are you okay? –a sweet voice echoed, shielding me from the rain.
I looked up grumpily. It was a girl with an umbrella, protecting me from the rain. She smiled at me gently; she looked very beautiful. Under normal circumstances, I would have tried to charm her and play with her until I got bored. However, today I would let her leave without anything happening.
–I don’t need your help –I replied brusquely.
–If you stay in the rain, you might get sick –she tried to reason with me.
–Get out of my sight! –I yelled as I stood up, pushing her umbrella aside so it fell to the ground.
I couldn’t stand this. All the girls approached me only because I was attractive. If it weren’t for that, no one would bother to stop in the middle of the rain—they were all so selfish. The girl looked at me for a few seconds as she picked up her umbrella and frowned; it seemed she had figured it out.
–Not every day does someone comes to help you –she retorted as she started to walk away. –Go ahead, keep soaking yourself; I’m not sheltering someone like you.
At that moment, I felt bad. It was true that she had walked away because of my behavior, and it was what I wanted, but deep down, I hoped she would stay with me a little longer. When was the last time I had experienced something like this from a stranger? I decided to follow her to apologize, but when I turned the corner, she had already disappeared.
–She’s really gone –I stood still, thinking.
A few months later...
Today was finally the first day at the new school. The first time we weren’t attending a private one. My best friend and I had left that place because of something that happened. Something I didn’t want to remember. We sat quietly listening to the welcome in a small hall, though for those used to these schools, it might have seemed large.
–Are you going to play at being the king of the school? –he wanted to know.
–My father called me this morning and said I have permission to play that game –I commented amusedly.
–Are you sure about this? –he asked, uncomfortable. –I think you’ve been holding onto vengeance for too long. Maybe, the girls here are better.
–I doubt it. Maybe they’ll fall even easier –I laughed while observing a group of girls staring at us nonstop. –After all, they only care about looks and money.
On the way to our classroom, the boys started talking to me. It seemed the rumor had spread quickly, and they were eager to join in. It might be easy to make myself popular and liked. I was grateful we had chosen a place like this. The girls followed behind us, chatting about some things, though I couldn’t follow the thread of their conversations.
The teacher handed me the key to the classroom and told us he’d be back in less than an hour, so we should hurry to pick our seats. The boys handed me a notebook and pen to jot things down. Then I asked the girls to line up so I could rank them from most to least attractive to arrange their seats in the classroom.
–Are you kidding me? –one complained. –We’re not mere objects for you to rank, you know?
–Relax, I’m not giving anyone a failing grade; you’re all beautiful inside and out –I said as I approached her directly. –Besides, I really just want the prettiest one to sit next to me. I like it when you defy me.
–So, will I sit next to you? –she suddenly asked, euphoric.
–Hm –I laughed amusedly. –Of course not. Pretending to play hard-to-get when you actually want something else makes you the least sexy to me. You’ll be in the front row.
–Well, I don’t want to either…–a bespectacled girl murmured. –You wouldn’t pick me first anyway, but I don’t want to feel bad about being one of the last. If you put someone in a low position, they’ll get upset.
–You’re beautiful –I smiled, kissing her cheek lightly before she could react. I didn’t feel a thing. –Your honesty has earned you the honor of being my first kiss at this school.
–Ah –she turned red immediately.
–I want one too –another complained.
–Me too, me too –said another. –The new guy is so handsome.
–Take it easy, darlings. First the rankings, and if there’s time, we’ll see –I smiled radiantly at them.
The bespectacled girl stormed into the room, seemingly upset about admitting she wouldn’t be the only one. I had just met her. Did she seriously expect to be the only one for me?
–Who does she think she is? –others whispered.
–Does she really think we’re going to line up to kiss him? –someone else commented, making me smile slightly. I was glad to see girls who weren’t so superficial.
–Whatever –another girl approached. –The ranking seems fun.
–And maybe we’ll accidentally get seated with a guy who likes us –winked another. –Wouldn’t you like to know who has a crush on you?
With the boys’ help, we managed to arrange the girls in the most suitable positions for me. None of them had caught my attention. Well, it was normal. I had never felt anything real for any girl, absolutely nothing.
Most seemed satisfied to be on the list to get to know me, and I had already greeted most of them warmly. I also planned to expand my influence throughout the school. Only Adrian, two boys, and I were left to sit, but then everyone turned to the front.
–Oh, right, she was on the list –David commented.
–Well, maybe you’ll want to rearrange the list a bit –Marcos added.
I stepped out of the classroom to see what they were looking at. A girl was approaching the room confidently, ready to enter. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was the girl with the umbrella. I didn’t know if this was good or bad, but I started to get nervous. I didn’t know whether to hope she remembered me or not.
–Good morning, guys –she greeted us cheerfully. –Don’t tell me you’re leaving class already on the first day. –She smiled angelically. –Oh, there are two new guys. Nice to meet you. I’m Bianca, and you?
–Hi, my name is Adrian, and this is Eric –he replied.
Bianca approached the door, but I put a foot out to block her. She looked at me, puzzled, and the other boys stepped in to tell her she couldn’t enter until we decided where to place her. That seemed to surprise her, and she asked about the teacher.
–He hasn’t come back yet –I replied as I moved closer to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear. Or so I tried, as she pulled away the moment she noticed me near.
–And, how exactly are you deciding where to place us? –she asked, increasingly intrigued until she saw the notebook David held and snatched it to read.
–Let’s see –she said in a not-so-angelic tone. –Why does this look like a list ranking us by our looks?
–Because that’s exactly what it is –Adrian blurted out. –It was all Eric’s idea, and we thought it was a good one.
–You’re kidding, right? –she stared at me, just like a girl whose desire to sit next to me I had easily uncovered.
–Relax, darling –I stepped forward, trying to pull her close to me, but she skillfully dodged my arm. –You’re so cute. You’ll have the honor of sitting with me.
–Pfft –she started laughing hysterically. –Sweetheart, I think you’ve picked the only girl with zero interest in your stupid game.
–What did you say? –I asked, stunned.
–I’ll sit wherever I feel like –she said as she broke that page out of the notebook and ripped it into pieces. –In case you didn’t get it, because you seem too egocentric to understand: I don’t want to be last on your list or even on it. –With that, she sat in a random free spot next to another girl.
I started heading toward her, irritated, when the teacher showed up. So, I had to wait until the first break to approach her directly with Adrian.
–There was a free spot next to me –I remarked, still annoyed.
–You’re too far from the board. I’d rather pay attention than talk to you –she replied coldly, nothing like the girl who didn’t want me to get sick from the rain.
–You say that, but you were pretty late –I criticized.
–Look, know-it-all –she snapped back with an icy glare. –Every year, they do the same presentation. The teacher wastes the first class trying to get to know us better. I don’t feel like wasting my time on this welcome.
She had a strong personality. I couldn’t believe she was talking back to me, staring directly into my eyes. I hadn’t expected to meet someone who would defy me.
–If I sit closer to the board, would you want to sit with me? –I asked in a tone unfamiliar to me.
–No –she rejected me. –Can’t you accept that I don’t like people like you?
–Fine –I replied, hurt. –You’ve just become the top of my list. Get ready for me to steal your heart like no one ever has.
–With that attitude, don’t expect to succeed –she scoffed as I returned to my seat with Adrian.
My PD:
