(Answer: nothing, except my ability to stop reading.) This was a light read with sharp teeth — the kind of romance that lures you in with smolder and banter, then pulls a sneaky emotional uppercut when you're least expecting it. Let’s talk about Emerson Brennan. She's neurodivergent, blunt, competent, and walking the fine line between “cool assassin” and “my comfort character in denial.” I wanted to love her more, but my Bones-warped brain kept picturing her as Dr. Temperance Brennan in a ponytail and tactical vest — same surname, same vibe. My mental casting betrayed me and gave her Emily Deschanel’s face, which did not match E.L. Knight’s vision of a hot, capable protector with a tragic past and resting scowl-face. Justice for Original Emerson, honestly. Bastion Sullivan? Oh, my man. ✨ Cinnamon roll in judge robes who absolutely could ruin your life and cuddle you after. Bastion was a swoon factory — all restrained intensity and secret softness. I would, without hesitation, commit light treason for this man. Now — the mystery plot. Oof. I respect the ambition, but the reveal came in like a rogue Deus Ex Machina on roller skates. If you're going to play in the “romantic suspense” sandbox, toss the readers a few breadcrumbs we can actually chew on, not a twist that drops out of the sky like a malfunctioning drone. Did it ruin the story? Nope. But it did make me growl into my coffee. Despite that hiccup, I flew through the book like a gremlin possessed. The banter was crisp, the chemistry electric, and the pacing never dragged. Was it perfect? No. Did I love it anyway? Absolutely. Short Summary: 🖤 Main characters = instant attachment 🧠 Neurodivergent rep + CIA backstory = intriguing 👩🏻⚖️ Bastion = lawful thirst trap 🕵️♀️ Mystery = weak spot (deus ex ahhh!) ✨ Final verdict = would 100% read Book 2 about their wedding/pregnancy/puppy adoption Spoiler - that last thing I already did :)"

"I am in love with this story! The narration was well written, the words used were appropriate and welll thought of, and the plot itself is just so compelling! I loved the.characters of Bastion Sullivan and Emerson Brennan, they are both smart with strong personalities although Bastion the male lead is the more expressive and sentimental one rather than the female lead Emerson, who is a beautiful and strong independent woman but has a hard time expressing herself and acknowledging her feelings. Bastion is the perfect man, faithful and passionate, and he is perfect for Emerson’s hardened personal. I wish this story was written longer, I am hoping there would be a Book 2 because I really want to continue reading Bastion and Emerson’s love story and hopefully read about their wedding and starting a family. Overall, this is just ine of the best stories I have read, and I will surely keep going back to read this again and again and again. Kudos to the author for such a beautiful work."
