Chapter 1 A Chance Encounter
Rae Thompson :
The sterile hum of fluorescent lights filled the air as i leaned closer to my computer monitor,my eyes scanned the stream of encrypted data scrolling across the screen.
My fingers moved instinctively over the keyboard, my mind was already five steps ahead in unraveling the complex code. The agency’s secure data room was like a sanctuary to me .It was quiet, methodical, and predictable.
Today, however, something felt different.
“Impressive,” a voice broke through my concentration. It was low and smooth, like whiskey poured over ice.
I froze, my fingers halting mid-keystroke.
Turning in my chair, I found myself face-to-face with a man leaning casually against the doorframe. His dark suit fitted impeccably and tailored to his broad shoulders and narrow waist. His Tousled dark hair framed his face . And the mans piercing green eyes seemed like it was assessing me within an instant.
“Can I help you?” I asked, my tone clipped. I wasn’t used to being interrupted, least of all by someone who looked like he belonged in a spy movie rather than in the agency’s secured tech division.
The man straightened, stepping into the room. “Adrian Cross,” he introduced himself, extending a hand. “Field operative. And, apparently, your new partner.”
I blinked, my brows knitting together in confusion. “Partner? I wasn’t informed of any reassignment.”
“Well,” Adrian said, his lips quirking into a smirk, “consider this your notice.”
I didn’t take his hand. Instead, i folded my arms, and leaned back in my chair. “I work alone. Field operatives don’t usually have much to contribute to cryptography.”
Adrian chuckled, and dropped his hand and shoved it into his pocket. “Field operatives like me don’t usually need cryptographers, but here we are. Looks like we’ll both have to adjust.”
I bristled, heat rising to my cheeks. “I don’t know who thought this was a good idea, but I suggest you—”
“Director’s orders,” he interrupted smoothly. “Something about the mission requiring both brains and brawn. I’ll let you guess which one of us is which.”
I glared at him. I didn’t need this disruption, especially not from someone who clearly thought he could charm his way through anything. But i also knew better than to challenge the Director’s decisions.
“What’s the mission?” i asked finally, and turned back to my screen and started typing in my login credentials.
Adrian stepped closer to me a faint scent of leather and cedar followed him. He slid a flash drive onto the desk beside me and said “Details are on here. High-level encryption. They said if anyone could crack it, it’d be you.”
I snorted softly. “Flattery won’t make me work faster, Cross.”
“Good,” he replied, his voice warm with amusement. “I prefer results over charm.”
I inserted the flash drive and began scanning its contents. The data was, indeed, heavily encrypted, layers of firewalls and code designed to keep out even the most seasoned hackers. It was a challenge, just the way i liked it.
As my fingers flew across the keyboard, Adrian leaned against the desk and watched me working. I could feel his eyes on me.It was sharp and calculating, and it made my skin prickle.
“Do you always stare at people like that?” I asked him without looking up.
“Only when I’m impressed,” Adrian quipped.
“Is that so?”
“Don’t get used to it,” he added with a grin.
I bit back a smile, refusing to let him get under my skin.
Instead, i focused on the task at hand, my mind zeroing in on the patterns within the code. After a few minutes, the encrypted files began to unravel, revealing a cache of classified intelligence.
“There,” i said, leaning back in my chair. “That’s what you needed. Isn’t?”
Adrian stepped closer and studied the computer screen. “Fast and efficient. I’ll give you that.”
“Are you always this condescending, or is it just me?” i asked, arching a brow.
Adrian chuckled. “Let’s call it a test. You passed.”
I rolled my eyes, but a part of me couldn’t help but feel a spark of satisfaction.
I wasn’t sure what to make of Adrian Cross, but one thing was certain, this partnership was going to test my patience and maybe something more.
