Summary

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” On the cusp of the 20th century, blue blood heiress Lucy Penn has lost everything: her betrothed, her family and home, and even her ability to walk in the sunlight. As she struggles to acclimate to her new nocturnal existence, she makes the acquaintance of Dr. Thomas Reed: an intelligent and tortured immortal, still haunted by the horrors of his past. As the pair grow closer, Lucy becomes privy to a frightening world far below the surface of polite society, in which beings of ancient and unfathomable power live outside the confines of humanity. “Seize the Night” follows Lucy on her journey through the shrouded streets, eerie hospitals, and aristocratic parlors of nighttime London. As she seeks to exhume the insidious and terrifying purpose behind her transformation, Lucy finds herself drawn deeper into a dark nocturne world of unimaginable folklore and intrigue, begging the question: can love be found after death?

Author's Note

This novel is first and foremost a historical fiction with elements of suspense, paranormal, and romance playing second fiddle. Stylistically, it is written accordingly.

Vampires and other preternatural creatures do play a role, and while some ideas surrounding these beings come from old legends and classic literary works (such as Bram Stoker's Dracula), the vast majority is my own mythology. For example, yes, vampires can see their reflections. They have physical bodies, don't they?

I have always been greatly influenced by classic literature. Writers such as Lewis Carroll, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Shakespeare have been a part of my life and education for as long as I can remember.

Bringing to life a sophisticated and gothic historical cast of characters has long since been a dream of mine. Themes such as loneliness, loss of humanity, finding oneself, and the many forms of heartbreak are all explored through my protagonist Lucy, her dear Dr. Reed, and their friends, allies, and enemies. Every character in this book is, in one way or another, me. This book is a labor of love, and one I feel most privileged to share.

Thank you for reading.

My sincerest gratitude,

Mar
