Ignorance

Part I

Into the Night

The Light is warm, the Light is kind…

“You know, I just can’t take you seriously when you’re a fox,” said a tall, lean figure as it stared at the blood red fox that stood in front of him.

The fox looked up at the golden-haired personage with a quizzical expression and replied, “Robin, when do you ever take me seriously?”

“Eh, good point,” said Robin as he rolled up the sleeves of his pitch black robe, brushed the golden hair off of his face, and raised his sabre. When he was in position, he asked, “Are you ready?”

The fox lowered its body to the ground and bore its silver fangs as it replied, “Always…”

The instant the fox replied, Robin lunged forward with his weapon, and watched as the creature gracefully evaded the attack. “You’ll have to be faster than that!” teased the fox as it began to circumnavigate around Robin.

“Well, if you would just hold still!” cried the boy as he turned and lunged at the fox a second time. Once again his sabre streamed past the fox and collided into the marble floor. The moment Robin’s sabre clashed with the cold, smooth surface, the fox vaulted onto him, sending them both falling to the floor.

“Hey, stop fighting!” shouted a feminine figure as the two fighters slowly picked themselves up off the floor. They each scanned the cylindrical room around them until they discovered a tall angelic figure standing in an open doorway. She was dressed in an elegant onyx black robe that matched her long, sapphire hair, and was staring coldly at Robin. Once Robin made eye contact with her, the young angelic personage extended her azure wings in an aggressive stance and said, “You two need to stop doing this! One of you might get hurt, and if that were to happen, you’d both be in trouble! At the very least, you could use the wooden sparring equipment so you don’t kill each other!”

“Well, Sophia,” responded Robin, sheathing his sword, “we’ve been doing this for how long now? Two years? And how many injuries have we gotten? None. Not one, ever.”

“That’s not an excuse!” yelled Sophia as she took a step toward Robin and pointed angrily at him.

“Yeah, it’s not,” said Robin sarcastically, “It’s just a very good statistic.”

Sophia planted her forehead into the palm of her hand as she replied, “What am I going to do with you two?”

As Robin opened his mouth to speak again, the blood red fox quickly intervened, saying, “Don’t argue with her, it’ll get us nowhere.”

Robin turned to the fox and asked, “Then what do you suppose we do? Let her win?”

The fox shook his head. “Winning’s not the point, Robin. Sophia’s only concerned about our well-being, and we should be grateful for that, not angry.”

“Thank you, Eclipse! Thank you!” exclaimed Sophia, “Finally, someone understands why I’m here! Why I’m trying to help you two!”

Robin quickly glanced at Sophia, then back at the blood red fox, Eclipse, and said “I still don’t care. I make my own choices, and I choose to fight.”

The Light is unwavering, the Light is undying…
