The Chase
The fire slowly flickered and vanished as the rain poured down.
Gerald woke up to find himself in the same valley he had been journeying but it was red. The night wasn’t dark as usual. Looking up, he saw the most shocking thing he ever saw in his life. The red light flickered and shone like glass in his green eyes. There was a red circular moon, and the whole surrounding was bloody.
He gasped as the colour increase. He heard the distant howl of wolves.
Gerald had never seen a red colour moon. He had only seen a blue moon and the regular white one.
What was this?
Then suddenly, he heard a low growl behind him. Turning around, he saw a grey and white wolf soaked in blood. It was alone- there was no pack.
“Hey, boy,” Gerald said, casually. He was scared alright, but he decided to stay calm. The wolf only growled.
Normally, people say when a dog’s chasing or barking at you don’t start running or else it will not stop chasing you. Gerald knew that. But this time his inner instincts told him to run as fast as he could, and like a dumb one he did. So did the wolf.
Gerald had never been chased by a wild beast and he never thought he would be, one day.
In front of him now was a dark forest and he ran right into it without thinking. The wolf was growling and chasing behind him in hunger.
Gerald turned his head to see if the wolf was still in pursuit, and he suddenly tripped on a tree root. He cried out loud as terror gripped his heart, realising the wolf was coming towards him.
For a moment, he closed his eyes, wishing this all to be a dream, and that he’ll wake up in his cosy bed at home feeling the Californian warmth.
But instead, he felt the sharp tug of the wolf’s teeth as they dug deep into his flesh under the red moonlight. He screamed in pain, as the wolf scratched his eyes out and bit him in his shoulder.
Gerald felt the world spinning, and the painful claws of the wolf.
This is the end. He thought desperately.
Not long after the wolf had bit him, there was a loud growl and the colour of the red moonlight increased. If you had been standing on top of a hill in the valley and looking down, you might have seen a grey and white wolf howling and running out of the forest with one leg broken.
If Gerald survived or not, we’ll never know till we reach the heart of the story book.
But we know one thing.
The day the wolf bit him, the whole world changed. Under every blood-red moon that appeared, rose the vampires and wolves transformed into humans seeking revenge.
The sunlight was given a place in coming right through Sabrina Carter’s window and to her eyes. She covered herself with a pillow, annoyed that the sun chose exactly her to tease.
But she wasn’t able to sleep for long because her mother started knocking on her door.
“Hey, hun, it’s time to wake up...you know we are going to see your cousins today!”
Sabrina was more than annoyed. Why wouldn’t anyone let her sleep in peace on a Saturday?
She scrambled out of the bed, the bed sheet stuck around her legs and trailing behind her.
She threw it back to the bed and marched into the bathroom and stared at her face for a few seconds; she looked like someone who was holding a Van de Graff machine. She wondered how those girls in films wake up with their hair perfectly fine with no strands coming out.
Still feeling sleepy, she splashed water in her face and shuddered as the icy cold water made goosebumps on her skin.
After all the brushing and washing, Sabrina stepped out of the bathroom and opened her wardrobe. It was her cousins’ place, not the President’s house; she decided to wear something relaxing and normal. She didn’t have much of an interest in bright colours, so she chose a very dark red baggy t-shirt and a long black pair of baggy jeans.
Ah, looking normal is just what I need! Sabrina thought as she wore the selected clothes.
As she disconnected her phone from its charger, she heard her 18-year-old sister, Laura shouting, “Hey, fashion-lady, when are you gonna come out? We are all waiting for you-ah, and mum asked me to tell you to see whether all the switches are off and if all the windows and doors are closed...”
“Ok, give me a minute, please,” Sabrina yelled back, trying to sound as calm as possible. She grabbed her things and did what her mum had askes her to. And then she ran down the stairs to tell everyone she was ready.
