Chapter 1
I live in a city where dreams and realities clash with a resounding thud. In this place, society is cleaved into categories - the poor, the workers, the middle class, the rich, and the elite. My own family straddled the line between the workers and the middle class. They’ve always hammered the importance of education into me, but one phone call flipped my world.
It was a hot, sticky summer evening when my phone jolted to life. On the other end of the line, my elder sister Emily delivered news that would shatter the delicate balance holding our lives together. “Dad’s retired,” she said, her voice laden with worry, “and his pension won’t stretch to cover your tuition fees next month.”
I felt like the ground had slipped from beneath me. My father, who had worked tirelessly in a thankless job, was supposed to be enjoying retirement. But this cruel twist of fate had unleashed financial uncertainty upon us.
“Where do we go from here?” I stammered, my voice quivering with anxiety.
Emily’s comforting words did little to ease the tightening knot in my chest. “We’ll figure it out,” she assured me, “loans, scholarships, part-time work—there are solutions. We’re in this together.”
As I hung up the phone, I knew that the path ahead would be marked by challenges and sacrifices. The Hourglass Theory, with its rigid class divisions, had abruptly become a stark reality in my life. My journey had begun, and little did I know the enigmas and concealed truths that lay ahead on this tumultuous road.
