Almost Something

Synopsis

Even though Zephyr calls me “baby” every time he sees me—even in front of our families—I try not to let it bother me. As long as our friendship stays the same, I’m happy.

But sometimes, it’s hard to ignore.

“Baby… I miss you already. Why didn’t you wait for me earlier? Look, I’m sad now,” Zephyr said, pouting at me with his puppy eyes.

“Didn’t you hang out with your girlfriend earlier?” I replied, the words cutting deeper than I expected. I hated how jealousy always crept in, even though we’re just friends.

“Eh, she’s fine with me always being with you… but baby, are you jealous?”

I looked at him, confused but defensive. “Me, jealous? Are you crazy? We’re just friends, okay.”

I paused for a moment, my heart racing, before adding, “And don’t call me ‘baby’ unless you mean it, Zephyr.”

I didn’t wait for his response. Instead, I turned and ran, hoping he wouldn’t see the tears forming in my eyes.

“Soren, wait!” he called after me.
