Chapter 1
Thorn stood in the shadows of the forge. It was very warm and she was struggling with all her thick fur. She was watching Canok work. She had one boot crossed over the other. He could see her glowing yellow eyes watching him intently, he didn’t break his focus once to look at her, . “So this is how you craft my weapons and armour so perfectly!” she exclaims and walks closer pushing herself off the wall. He huffed a smile focusing on his work.
“I can’t believe you’ve seen a dragon!” He said sounding amazed.
“Eh,” she shrugs, “you get used to it when you’ve seen enough of em on quests.”
“You’re so blase,” he remarks as he seals the claw marks. She sits on one of his wooden benches and leans her head on her paws. “Do you have any more quests to go on?”
“No, we’re home for now. We’re back to our normal guard duties, which means we can enjoy the autumnal festivities,” she smiles.
“If I recall that’s your favourite time of the year?” he asks continuing to work on the armour. “You not too hot in here?”
“I am a little,” she responds.
“You don’t have to watch me, you can go outside,” he said.
“I may have to,” she said and walked outside, she took a deep breath of the cool air drawing it deep into her lungs. Her ears twitched as she listened to the sounds of the town, and her ears twitched around as she heard Canoks hammering as he worked on her armour on the anvil.
“Here again,” another wolf says approaching her, he was covered in tawny fur with a white face and clad in silver armour.
“Yes,” she said, “that dragon did a number on my chest plate.”
“Yeah I know, I was the one who dragged you out from under the dragon’s claws,” he said, “how are the wounds?” Conak had been listening to everything and he was a bit jealous, it should have been him saving her.
“Sore if you want me to be honest,” she said.
“Have you been to the healer?” he asked.
“Do I ever?” she was interrupted.
“You are such a stubborn wolf!” he exclaimed.
“I don’t need to go to a healer,” she said, “I can heal myself thank you!”
“Yeah that’s what you said when you had an infection in your ear that time?” he reminded her, “you won’t even let me see will you?” She shook her head.
“No,” she said.
“Thorn!” Conak said racing to the door, “I know a perfect healer who can heal those wounds, there’s a druid in my home village.” He would do anything to stop the other wolf guard from laying his paws on her. She turns to look at him over her shoulder.
“Don’t you start fussing, I am okay,” she says. The tawny wolf rolls his eyes and leaves the pair alone. “You’re such a worry bucket, I’ll be fine have you forgotten us wolves heal fast!”
“Yes okay, you have a point, now come inside I want to show you your new chest piece,” he says leading her back into the small forge, the heat hitting her all over again. It sat on a mannequin in the corner, it was perfect and polished.
“Oh my goodness! It doesn’t even look like a dragon clawed it!” She said, her jaw dropping open, she gently stroked the silver of the chest.
“That is why I am called the best Blacksmith around!” he said.
“Are you always this big-headed?” she joked with a joyful smile showing off her canines.
“No,” he said.
“Now can you sort my lance out?” She said lifting the heavy metal lance onto the wooden table, it had splintered from constant use.
“Of course, give a couple of days and it will be perfect once again!” He smiled and looked her over, she watched as she disappeared from the door a grin on his face, he could feel a bond forming with her already.
