Summary

Lola hears about a murder in her town. The details of the murder are very unusual and involve an aquarium and a sharpened walking stick. What's most shocking is that several weeks ago, Lola had a dream about a murder that included all these same details. The only person she happened to tell is her psychiatrist, whose office is located near the neighborhood where the murder took place

Prologue

Growing up has not been easy for me. First, my mom and dad passed when I was six, and I was placed in foster care. I moved between multiple homes, none of which compared to the life I would have had with my real parents. I was diagnosed with severe depression at the age of ten. I was often bullied and sometimes physically attacked because I looked vulnerable, with my black, curly hair that was usually tangled my sad blue eyes that sparkled, and my small, slender frame.

Over the years, I have had my share of experiences in hospitals and mental health facilities. When I met a guy named Jack, it was love at first sight. I had never felt so safe in my life; he was everything I needed at the time and made me feel good in many ways. We dated for three years, and during that time, he did things to me that I thought were okay. At the time, I didn’t realize that what he was doing was harmful and that he was hurting me.

We would get into fights regularly, and after each argument, we would reconcile, only to fight again later. By the time I ended our relationship, I discovered that he was seeing other people. He was a disgusting man who I had allowed to sleep in my bed and be my lover. These experiences left me with severe PTSD, a disorder that many people associate with military service. Eventually, I began seeing a psychologist who helped me cope and improve my situation.

At the age of 20, I found myself grappling with the weight of various disorders that had shadowed my adolescence. Yet, amidst the chaos, I discovered a glimmer of hope—a newfound purpose that guided me through the darkness. I had just embarked on my residency as a radiologist, the dream job I had longed for.

In those early days, the thrill of donning my white coat and stepping into the bustling hospital filled me with a sense of belonging. I was finally in a position to help those who were hurt, to play a pivotal role in their healing journeys. Each time I examined an X-ray or a CT scan, I felt a rush of fulfillment, knowing that my work could make a difference in someone’s life. It was more than a career; it was my calling.

But just as quickly as my life seemed to gain momentum, the ground beneath me shifted once more. Circumstances outside of my control began to unravel the fragile peace I had managed to build. The challenges I thought I had conquered returned with a vengeance, and I struggled to navigate the turbulence. Despite my passion for helping others, I found myself battling my own demons, wondering if I could balance my aspirations with the challenges I faced.

As I stood at this crossroads, I realized that the journey of healing—both for myself and the patients I served—was far from linear. It was a winding path filled with its own ups and downs, teaching me resilience and the importance of support, not just for others, but for oneself as well.
