Prologue | The Dream Hotel

Elianna

The Dream Hotel isn’t a place you find—it finds you. That’s what the letter had said.

Thick, cream-coloured paper embossed with gold, delivered to my doorstep without a name or address.

“We are pleased to extend this invitation,” the letter read in elegant, flowing script. “To a position that will change your life.”

The words had stuck with me, a faint hum in the back of my mind, growing louder with each passing day. I had almost dismissed it, almost… but now I stood at the gates, staring up at the towering building that shimmered like a mirage through the mist.

The wrought-iron gates creaked open as if by command, and my breath caught. It was beautiful, but it wasn’t just the architecture, the golden spires piercing the sky, the arched windows glowing faintly in the dim light, or the marble steps leading to the grand entrance. It was the way the air seemed alive, vibrating softly against my skin, as though the hotel was breathing.

I took a step forward, my suitcase wheels scraping against the cobblestone path. The mist curled around me like curious fingers. The moment I crossed the threshold, the gates groaned shut behind me, leaving me alone in the heavy silence.

It was too late to turn back now.

Inside, the hotel was nothing short of a masterpiece.

The lobby stretched far beyond what seemed possible from the outside. Polished marble floors reflected the soft light of crystal chandeliers, their delicate prisms swaying gently as though stirred by an invisible breeze. Ornate columns framed the space, each one carved with intricate patterns that seemed to shift when I looked at them too long.

And then there was the light, warm, golden, and alive, as if it seeped from the very walls themselves.

I was so lost in the grandeur that I didn’t notice the man standing at the reception desk until he spoke.

“Miss Moore,” he said, and the sound of my name was like a tether pulling me back to reality.

I turned, my gaze landing on him—and for a moment, I forgot how to speak.

He was elegant, almost impossibly so, his tailored suit a perfect match for the refined atmosphere of the hotel. His dark hair was swept back, his sharp features softened by a faint smile that somehow managed to feel both kind and utterly disarming. But it was his eyes that stopped me—piercing, yet warm, as if they could see straight through me.

“Hello,” he said, stepping out from behind the desk with an elegance that made the movement feel like choreography. “We’ve been expecting you.”

His presence was magnetic, filling the room in a way that made the grandeur of the hotel itself seem like a mere backdrop. His name was Laurent, a detail he offered so casually it felt less like an introduction and more like a formality he rarely bothered with.

“I trust your journey was pleasant?” he asked, his voice a low, velvety cadence that seemed to wrap itself around the room. It wasn’t just inviting—it was commanding, the kind of tone that pulled you closer without you even realising it.

“Yes,” I lied, though I wasn’t entirely sure why. The truth was, my journey had been nerve-wracking, a haze of second-guessing and tightly knotted nerves. But standing here now, I didn’t want to admit that.

He studied me for a moment, his smile deepening slightly, as if he could see right through my answer. “Good,” he said simply.

Before I could respond, he gestured for me to follow.

“This way,” he said, his steps echoing softly against the marble floors as he led me deeper into the hotel.

The hallways we walked through were unlike anything I’d ever seen.

Each one seemed impossibly long, lined with doors that were anything but ordinary.

Some were carved from dark, weathered wood, others gleamed with polished gold, and a few shimmered faintly, as though they were made of liquid silver. Each door had its own distinct energy, almost like they were alive, and I found myself drawn to them in a way I couldn’t explain.

Laurent noticed my lingering gaze and spoke without looking back. “Each door leads to a unique space, tailored to the needs of our guests.”

“Tailored how?” I asked, curiosity slipping into my voice.

He turned his head slightly, his lips curving into a soft, almost indulgent smile. “You’ll see soon enough. Your role in Guest Services,” he continued, his tone as smooth as silk, “is more than simply maintaining the hotel’s appearance. You are to ensure that every room remains ready, pristine and untouched, until it welcomes its next guest. And while you may occasionally interact with our patrons, you must never linger or pry. These rooms are… deeply personal. They reflect the unspoken desires of those who enter them, and your presence must always remain secondary to their purpose.”

I felt a chill at his words, but the allure of the place was undeniable. It felt like stepping into the pages of a story I hadn’t yet read, and I wasn’t sure if I was a character, an observer, or something in between.

We turned a corner, and my steps faltered. There, at the end of the hall, was a door unlike any other. It was smooth and black, devoid of carvings or embellishments, and yet it seemed to hum faintly, its surface almost pulsing with life.

“That one,” I began, my gaze fixed on the door at the end of the hall. Its surface was smooth and black, gleaming faintly in the golden light like liquid shadow. Unlike the others, it bore no carvings, no symbols—just an unsettling stillness that seemed to pull at me, daring me to come closer.

Laurent’s steps slowed, his gaze following mine. “Room Thirteen,” he said, and though his voice remained calm, it carried a weight that settled over the air like a shroud. “It is not your concern, Miss Moore.”

The way he said it made my curiosity burn brighter. “Why does it look… different?” I asked, the question slipping out before I could stop myself.

His expression didn’t change, but the faintest flicker of something crossed his eyes, something cold, fleeting, and impossible to name. “Because it is.”

I glanced back at the door. The air around it felt heavier, thicker, as though it pulsed with a life of its own. “What’s inside?” The words came out softer, almost a whisper.

Laurent’s voice dropped to match mine, and for the first time, his tone sharpened with a quiet finality. “Some questions, Miss Moore, are best left unanswered. And some doors…” He paused, letting the silence stretch between us like a taut string. “Some doors are meant to remain closed.”

His words sent a faint shiver up my spine, but I couldn’t tear my eyes from the door. Its surface seemed to ripple faintly, as though it had heard him—and disagreed.

“Miss Moore,” Laurent said, his tone a soft nudge that made me realize how long I’d been staring. His gaze was unreadable now, but his lips curved in a faint smile that felt more like a warning than reassurance. “Don’t linger.”

Reluctantly, I tore my gaze away and followed him, the faint hum of the door trailing behind me like a shadow I couldn’t quite shake.

We stopped in front of a silver door engraved with my name: Elianna Moore – Guest Services.

“This will be your quarters,” Laurent said, producing a small key from his pocket and pressing it into my hand. The metal was cold against my skin, heavier than it should have been.

“Your duties will begin tomorrow,” he continued. “Each morning, you’ll be assigned specific rooms to care for. Every one of them is unique, but you are not to enter unless invited.”

I nodded, the key clutched tightly in my palm.

“There are three rules you must follow,” he said, his voice soft but edged with an unyielding authority that sent a ripple of unease through me.

  1. Never enter a room without permission.
  2. Never ask the guests about their experiences
  3. Under no circumstances are you to approach Room Thirteen.”

His words hung in the air like a challenge, daring me to question them. And I did.

“Why not?” I asked, the words spilling out before I could stop them.

Laurent stopped walking, his posture freezing mid-step as he turned to face me fully.

His dark eyes locked onto mine, and the faint, easy warmth I’d glimpsed earlier evaporated like mist burned away by the sun.

“Some doors, Miss Moore,” he said, his voice a low, measured whisper that carried more weight than any shout could, “are not meant to be opened.”

I felt the air shift around us, heavier now, like the walls themselves were listening. His gaze didn’t waver, and for the briefest moment, I thought I saw something flicker behind his eyes, something sharp and unrelenting, like a warning wrapped in shadow.

“Room Thirteen,” he continued, his tone softening into something almost sorrowful, “is not curiosity to be satisfied. It is not an invitation. It is a line, Miss Moore. A boundary. Cross it…” He paused, his lips tightening slightly before finishing, “...and the hotel won’t be the one to bear the consequences.”

The finality of his words sent a shiver skittering down my spine, silencing the dozens of questions bubbling to the surface. Laurent tilted his head, the faintest flicker of amusement curving his lips, but it was the kind of smile that offered no comfort—only a quiet, unshakable certainty.

“Do not test it,” he added, turning and continuing down the hall as if the conversation had already been buried.

I followed, but my thoughts remained rooted behind me, tangled in the silence that now pulsed like a heartbeat around that door.

That night, my room was a sanctuary of quiet luxury. The bed was impossibly soft, the air faintly perfumed with something warm and comforting, and yet I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched—not by a person, but by the hotel itself.

As I lay beneath the blankets, exhaustion tugging at my body, my mind drifted back to Room Thirteen. Its smooth, black surface. The faint hum. The way it seemed to breathe, alive in a way I couldn’t quite comprehend.

Sleep came in fragments, but when it finally claimed me, the dreams were vivid.

I was back in the hallway, standing before the black door. Light spilled from its edges, golden and warm, and somewhere in the distance, a voice was calling my name.

When the door began to open, the light engulfed me.

And then I heard it, Laurent’s voice, smooth and inviting, like a lullaby laced with danger.

“Welcome,” he said, his voice a velvet thread that seemed to weave through the very air, binding me in its spell. “To the Dream Hotel.”
