Whole story

Back up in the town of Girdwood, about a year after the incident with the black bear, Cole was finally ready to go hunting again. So Jack, Chandler, George, and Cole were planning to go hunting a couple of deer this summer. They were all at the archery range because they got a little rusty because they didn’t go hunting because of Cole’s injuries and they needed to practice.

After the archery range they went home and got ready to go out to the woods together tomorrow. That night Cole had a dream that they were going to run into         the big black bear they found the last time and the bear had Chandler by the arm.          He woke up to a startle in his cotton and wool bed in his log cabin. He thought it was all a dream but he thought it was so vivid.

The next morning they all brought the things they brought with them the last time but with the exception of bear spray. Cole thought about telling the guys about his dream but he didn’t want to ruin this trip for anyone. So he kept his mouth shut. “Let's do this,” Said George with a grin on his face. They headed out as soon as they met at the edge of the forest that they loved to hunt in.

The first day they only got one big deer. They skinned the animal and had the meat for dinner once they found a spot to sleep and set up a campfire to roast some of the deer for dinner. “Ha it's nice to be in the wilderness again all together,” said Chandler. “You can say that again,” said Jack. They didn’t have enough hide for four blankets. They needed at least two hide per blanket. So they needed to hunt at least seven deer to skin and make into blankets. This was good practice for Cole's arm.

The next day they went searching for more deer to hunt. After about an hour of searching they took a break and ate some gooseberries they found. After that they heard some rustling in the bushes about a hundred feet away. “Shhhh,” whispered Chandler. They all got their bows ready and just as they pulled back the strings two or three deer came out of the bushes and they let their arrows fly and they hit two deer. So they chased them till they died from loss of blood. They tied them up and brought them with them.

After they made it back to camp they hung up the two deer in a tree so a bear couldn’t get to them. They took more of the deer they had from the day before to eat for dinner. “Hey guys I saw some more gooseberries. Maybe we can make some jam.” said Jack. “That sounds like a good idea,” said Cole. So they took some berries and water and put it in a pan and made some fresh gooseberry jam. They each had about three spoonfuls of gooseberry jam then they were set for the day till dinner. They just needed to hunt about five more deer.

About two hours later they heard some rustling. But it didn’t sound like a deer, it was too big. That’s when the same black bear grabbed Chandler by the arm and swung him by the arm. The rest shot their arrows at the bear and this time it dropped chandler and advanced toward the hunters with anger in his eyes. They didn’t have the bear spray because it was with Chandler. They shot so much that there were about twenty arrows sticking up from its back. But Cole wanted to protect his friends so he said “ Jack go over to Chandler and we will distract it '' Jack hesitated but in the end he ran over to Chandler and inspected the bit mark and it looked like he lost a bunch of blood. Cole took a great amount of arrows and he only had one arrow left so he took aim and let the arrow fly and it struck him in the eye. He roared and scratched his eye and he looked at Cole with great hatred. Cole took out his knife and got ready for hand in hand combat. George was still firing cause he took his time and aimed. He was the best archer in the gang.

Cole got ready and charged at the bear and Chandler over the pain yelled “NO.” As Cole got closer he pointed the knife down and lifted his arm over his head and struck down into the skull of the big black bear that still had the arrow in his eye.

Once the knife hit the bear it got so out of control he had hit Cole into a tree. They all heard a crack and Cole laid limp on the ground not a twitch came. Chandler got so angry that he got up and took out his knife with his left hand and struck the bear in the shoulder twice before going back on the ground from pain in his arm. The bear fell and laid limp on the ground just as Cole had. George and Jack rushed over to Coles’ body and they laid him on his back and Jack checked Coles’ pulse but nothing came.

They walked over back to Chandler who passed out and they brought both of them to the campsite and put them on the cots’ and packed up and ran all the way to the same hospital. Chandler went to immediate surgery. But the doctor said Cole is gone. They sat there absorbing the news and they just looked at the ground and didn’t talk. When they went to Chandler's room because he requested them. They told him about Cole. “ It should have been me,” said Chandler, looking like his soul was gone. That night they all went home with little injuries but without one person.

They made a memorial for him on the side of the road next to the forest with his bow, spear, a jar of jam, and the knife and arrow that killed the bear. They always hunted with rifles instead of bows after his death. When they hunted they always felt like something was missing. But I guess Cole's dream was true.
