As the water wrapped around her and forced its way into her throat, all she could feel was a sense of betrayal.
She tried to move her arms, tried force the water to move, to bend to her will. Instead, the water retaliated by soaking into her thick furs, pulling her down and away from the surface. She could see bright flashes of fire and could imagine their awful noise. She could see her people jumping in the water, looking for her, but they couldn’t see her in the dark.
Her head slammed into the rocks and the riptide that had pulled her under now yanked her away from the boats, away from her people, and away from her memories. Until there was no more.
