Chapter One: The First Glimpse
Eliza’s POV
The air in the grand hall was stifling, thick with the scents of various packs mingling together—a heady mixture of authority, submission, and untamed power.
Tonight marked the annual Alpha Summit, where leaders from across the territories gathered to discuss alliances, disputes, and the ever-precarious balance of power.
I wasn’t supposed to be here;
daughters of Alphas weren’t typically invited to such gatherings unless they were mated or deemed of strategic importance.
But as my father loved to remind me, I wasn’t the type to follow rules.
The crystal chandeliers cast a warm golden glow, illuminating the faces of powerful men and women. My dress—a deep emerald green that hugged my curves just enough to draw attention—earned a fair share of lingering glances, but I paid them no mind.
My focus was on the doors at the far end of the room, waiting for my so-called mate, Roy Klinger, to return from whatever self-important conversation he’d drifted into.
Roy.
The name alone made my stomach twist. He was an Alpha in title but a boy in every other sense—petty, insecure, and worst of all, cruel.
My wolf growled softly at the thought of him, her disapproval as clear as my own.
I hadn’t chosen him, of course. Our “relationship” was a union of convenience for our packs, nothing more. I’d tried to break it off countless times, but Roy wasn’t the type to let go easily.
“Eliza,” his sharp voice cut through my thoughts as he approached, a glass of whiskey in his hand and a scowl etched onto his face.
“Roy,” I replied coolly, turning to face him.
“You’ve been standing here like a statue all night. Do you think I brought you here just to sulk?” he hissed under his breath, his fingers wrapping firmly around my wrist.
“I’m not sulking,” I said evenly, though my wrist throbbed under his grip.
“And if you didn’t want me here, you shouldn’t have invited me.”
His eyes flashed with anger, and for a moment, I thought he might lash out. But then, something shifted in the atmosphere, an almost imperceptible ripple that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
The grand doors at the far end of the hall swung open, and the room fell into an almost reverent silence.
A man stepped inside, his presence commanding every ounce of attention in the room.
He was tall—easily over six feet—with broad shoulders and a predatory grace that made the air around him seem electric.
His dark hair was neatly combed, and his chiseled features were as cold and unyielding as stone.
But it was his eyes that held me captive—silver-gray, piercing, and utterly unreadable.
I didn’t need anyone to tell me who he was. Julien Redwood.
The Alpha King.
I’d heard stories about him, of course—everyone had. The ruthless leader who ruled with an iron fist, the one no other Alpha dared to cross.
But nothing could have prepared me for the reality of him.
He wasn’t just powerful; he was power itself, wrapped in human form.
Beside me, Roy stiffened, his grip on my wrist slackening as he bowed his head in submission. I did the same, though my wolf bristled at the act.
She didn’t like bowing, not to anyone.
“Alpha Redwood,” someone greeted him, their voice a mixture of awe and fear.
Julien acknowledged the speaker with a curt nod before his gaze swept the room, sharp and assessing. And then, impossibly, his eyes locked onto mine.
I froze, my breath hitching as something inexplicable rippled through me. A strange, magnetic pull surged in my chest, as if an invisible string tied me to this man I had never met.
My skin tingled, and my wolf stirred restlessly, her usual calm replaced by an urgent, unfamiliar longing.
I tried to look away, but I couldn’t. His silver eyes held mine, and for a fleeting moment, I felt exposed, as though he could see straight through the barriers I had so carefully constructed.
My heart pounded, and heat crept up my neck.
And then it was gone. He moved his gaze elsewhere, his expression cold and unreadable, as if the moment had meant nothing to him.
“Eliza,” Roy’s voice snapped me back to reality, his tone laced with suspicion. “What the hell was that?”
“What was what?” I replied, feigning ignorance as I pulled my wrist free from his grip.
“Don’t play dumb with me,” he hissed, his voice low but venomous. “You were staring at him like—”
“Like what?” I challenged, my own voice rising. “Like I saw a real Alpha for the first time in my life?”
Roy’s face darkened, and before I could react, he grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the shadows of the hall, away from prying eyes.
“You think you’re clever, don’t you?” he growled, his fingers digging into my skin. “You think you can embarrass me like that in front of everyone?”
“Let go of me, Roy,” I said through gritted teeth, my wolf snarling beneath the surface.
“Or what?” he sneered, his breath hot against my ear. “Don’t fool yourself, Eliza. You’re mine, and you always will be.”
A surge of anger went throug me, and before I could stop myself, I shoved him away with enough force to make him stumble.
“I am not yours,” I said, my voice trembling with fury. “And I never will be.”
Roy opened his mouth to retort, but a low but powerful growl silenced him.
I turned, my breath catching as I saw Julien standing a few feet away, his silver eyes locked onto us.
My skin prickled again, the same magnetic pull returning in full force. My pulse thundered in my ears, and a strange mix of anticipation and fear curled in my stomach.
“Is there a problem here?” he asked, his voice smooth and authoritative, cutting through the silence like a blade.
Roy paled, his bravado crumbling under the weight of Julien’s presence. “N-no, Alpha Redwood,” he stammered, stepping back.
Julien’s gaze shifted to me, and the weight of it sent shivers down my spine. I didn’t understand the way my heart raced, the way my body seemed to hum with an energy I couldn’t explain.
“Eliza, isn’t it?” he said, his tone calm, but his eyes held a flicker of something I couldn’t name.
“Yes,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
He studied me for a moment longer before nodding. “I’ll be seeing you.”
And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, my heart racing and my mind spinning.
I wasn’t sure what had just happened, but I knew that I might have a slight problem building up in this exact moment
