Chapter 1. A new arrival

Maya had always wanted a fresh start. After her breakup with Adam, everything in her old city reminded her of him. The streets they walked, the coffee shop they used to visit, and even her favorite park—everything felt empty without him. She needed to leave.

So, one bright morning, Maya packed her bags and drove to a small seaside town called Clearwater. It was a quiet place, far from the busy life she used to know. The air smelled of salt and flowers, and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks filled her heart with calm.

She found a small cottage to rent near the beach. It wasn’t fancy, but it was cozy. The walls were painted light blue, and the windows let in warm sunlight. Maya smiled as she unpacked her things. “This is where I’ll start over,” she whispered to herself.

After settling in, she decided to explore the town. She walked down the main street, where small shops and cafés lined the road. The people seemed friendly, smiling and waving as she passed by. One shop caught her eye—a café called The Seaside Corner. The sign above the door was hand-painted, and the smell of fresh coffee drifted out into the street.

Maya pushed open the door, and a small bell rang to announce her arrival. Inside, the café was warm and inviting. Wooden tables were scattered around, and soft music played in the background. She walked to the counter, where a tall man stood wiping a glass.

“Welcome to The Seaside Corner,” he said, his voice deep and smooth. His dark hair fell over his forehead, and his green eyes sparkled as he smiled at her. “First time here?”

“Yes,” Maya said, feeling a little nervous under his gaze. “I just moved to town.”

“Well, welcome to Clearwater. I’m Leo, the owner of this place.” He held out his hand, and Maya shook it. His grip was firm but gentle, and his touch sent a strange warmth through her.

“I’m Maya,” she said, her voice softer than she expected.

Leo nodded and leaned against the counter. “Maya, let me guess. You’re here for the peace and quiet, right?”

She laughed, feeling more at ease. “You could say that. I needed a change.”

“Well, you’ve come to the right place,” he said. “This town is as quiet as it gets. But we do know how to have fun too.” His smile grew wider, and Maya felt her cheeks heat up.

Leo made her a cappuccino, and they talked for a while. Maya learned that he had lived in Clearwater his whole life. He loved the town and had opened the café five years ago. She told him a little about herself but avoided mentioning her breakup.

As she sipped her coffee, she couldn’t help but notice how Leo’s eyes lingered on her. It wasn’t in a creepy way—it was like he was genuinely interested in her. It had been a long time since anyone had looked at her like that.

When she finished her coffee, Maya stood to leave. “Thanks for the coffee, Leo. I’ll definitely be back.”

“I hope so,” he said, his voice soft. “Take care, Maya.”

As she walked back to her cottage, Maya’s mind was full of thoughts about Leo. There was something about him that intrigued her. He seemed kind, but there was also a mystery in his eyes, like he was holding back a part of himself.

For the first time in months, Maya felt a flicker of excitement. Maybe moving to Clearwater was the best decision she had ever made
