Prologue

Blood always demands its price. Through the plane’s small window, Aria watched Manhattan’s lights fade into darkness, each glittering tower a reminder of the man whose vengeance would follow her across oceans. Her fingers trembled as she pressed them against the cold glass, her other hand drifting unconsciously to her still-flat stomach. Of all the secrets she carried as she fled into the night, this one was the most dangerous – Alexander Kane’s child growing beneath her heart, even as she ran from its father.

Sophie slept beside her, oblivious to the storm raging in her sister’s mind. The low hum of the military transport’s engines couldn’t drown out the echoes of memories – Alexander’s midnight-blue eyes softening as he kissed her, his hands gentle even as they commanded absolute power, his voice raw with emotion as he spoke of family and loyalty. Before everything shattered. Before blood stained the morning frost crimson, and betrayal painted their love in shades of darkness.

The lights of New York dwindled beneath storm clouds, like stars being swallowed by an endless night. Each mile that carried them toward Italy felt like another nail in the coffin of everything she’d dreamed of becoming. Every breath was weighted with the price of choices she couldn’t undo, consequences she never meant to unleash. Through the scratched plexiglass, she watched the city that had witnessed her greatest triumph and deepest betrayal disappear into the darkness below.

The military transport’s engines droned steadily as Aria clutched the agency documents that would give them new lives, new identities, a fresh start bought with blood and broken trust. Her betrayal had torn apart more than just her own life – it had shattered an empire, destroyed a family, and painted her future in shades of fear and regret. The child she carried would be her salvation or her damnation. She’d seen what Alexander did to those who betrayed him, watched him destroy lives with a single command, observed his cold fury when crossed. How much worse would his vengeance be when he discovered she carried his heir even as she fled?

“I thought I could save him,” she whispered into the darkness, her voice breaking. Her breath fogged the window, obscuring the last glimpse of the city she’d set aflame. “Find some way to protect him, even as I destroyed him. But I destroyed him completely... and one day, he’ll find me.”

The plane banked sharply toward the Atlantic. Aria pressed her hand harder against her abdomen, where their child grew beneath her heart – the final betrayal, the ultimate price of her choices. She’d watched Alexander’s mercy die alongside his trust. Once, he’d held her like she was precious, whispered poetry against her skin, promised her a future she could never have. Now those same hands would bring her nothing but retribution. The thought made her shiver despite the cabin’s warmth, remembering the cold fury in his eyes when his world began to crumble.

“When that day comes,” she breathed, a single tear tracking down her cheek, “I’ll pay the price.”

Below, New York vanished beneath the clouds, swallowing every trace of the life she’d burned to ashes. But even as she fled into exile, Aria knew with bone-deep certainty – there was no running from what she’d done. No escaping the blood price of betrayal. The night stretched endless before her, each mile carrying her further from the man she’d destroyed, yet somehow bringing her closer to the inevitable moment when he would find her.
