Arabella

It was all a lie. Everything he told me was a lie. It’s been three years since I last saw him. All of this started from that one damn meeting in the garden. My life would’ve been perfect if I had never gone there that day. Let me tell you guys a story of how the god of the underworld screwed my life over.

One day, I went out for a walk with my sisters Alexandria, Echo, and Isabelle. We ended up near a garden that looked abandoned. Echo had told us that she was seeing a man, whom they met regularly. “Echo, if Father finds out, he will murder you,” I told her while running my hand through her hair.

She scowled at me and sighed. I carried on running my fingers through her hair. Suddenly, the ground started to shake, and a vast crack began to form. The sky began to turn a dark red; the air smelled of blood and death. The three of us huddled together near a tree. A bright flash made us bow our heads toward the ground. Soon the ground stopped shaking, and the sky went back to normal, only for two handsome men standing where the crack was. Echo ran up to one of the men. He turned and faced us; his crimson eyes pierced my soul. He had long ebony hair, a pale complexion that made his cheekbones stand out, dressed in a black toga that seemed tattered but somehow made look good, and a sword rested on his hips.

“Hello Love, I see you brought guests today,” he said. His voice was deep and rich. He looked at Echo and smiled lovingly, wrapping an arm around her waist.

“Alexandria, Arabella, Isa, this is Thanatos. The man I’ve been telling you guys about,” Echo said excitedly. I looked at her like she was crazy, the literal ground had just split open in front of us, and she was beaming over the god of death. I bowed my head toward the god and avoided eye contact. I nudged Alexandria to do the same.

“My dear, you do not need to bow to me; you are the sisters of my beloved. Raise your heads.”

I raised my head and met the eyes of the stranger next to Thanatos. He was taller than Thanatos; his eyes were dark as the night sky; his hair was charcoal. He had a slight red glow surrounding him. He was pale. His cheekbones had a rosy tint to them; I didn’t notice until I heard Echo calling me that I was standing next to this mysterious man.

“Echo, you never told me how beautiful your sister was,” the mysterious man said.

I was too stunned to speak. Was the man talking about Alexandria or me? I don’t know, but I could feel the power rolling off him in waves. It made me quiver in fear. I met Echo’s eyes, wondering who this man was.

“Arabella, that is Lord Hades,” she said, looking away from me.

I paled when she said that I was standing next to the god of the Underworld. I couldn’t believe it; I couldn’t believe any of this. Since when do gods mingle with humans? Hades turned and faced me. Our eyes locked, and I felt like I was falling into a bottomless pit. I tore my eyes away and looked at my feet. Why? Why do I feel like this? I couldn’t stop my thoughts from running rapidly.

I was brought back from my thoughts when it started lighting. A loud clap of thunder startled my sisters and I. Thanatos, and Hades pushed us behind them as lighting began to strike everything around us.

“I guess Zeus is angry,” Hades said with a smirk on his face.

I stared at him as his eyes began to glow a dark red, and in his hands was a black orb forming. He signaled Thanatos to come closer. The orb got bigger and bigger. Soon we were encased in it. I was shaking so badly my legs were about to give out. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them again, Hades and Thanatos were nowhere to be seen, and we were in the garden at the back of our house.

After that day, I haven’t seen Hades for a while. I have only seen him once, but I somehow miss him. Echo has been depressed since then, and Isabelle and Alexandria haven’t mentioned anything. I walked into Echo’s room to find her lying on the floor clutching a black rose. I wouldn’t say I liked seeing her like this. It was making our father worried. I need to find a way to contact Thanatos and possibly Hades.

I left the house and went to the garden where we all met for the first time. The cracks in the ground were still there. The lighting damaged the trees, the flowers looked electrocuted, and the pond dried up. I sighed. It looked nothing like it did three months ago. I wanted to curse Zeus for ruining things, but I didn’t want to be sent to the Underworld the hard way.

Tracing my finger along the crack, the ground began to split open again. I wasn’t scared this time around. I moved back a couple of steps. I covered my eyes with my veil and waited until the ground stopped shaking. The sound of someone clearing their throat made me look up. I was filled with happiness when I saw Hades.

I don’t know what came over me, but I ran into his arms. Tightening my grip around his waist, he pulled me closer and leaned down, and his lips brushed mine. His lips felt soft; I leaned in more, smashing my lips onto his.
