Chapter 1
Carol I woke up to the sound of my alarm blaring in my ear. I groggily reached over to turn it off and sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. It was Monday morning, and I wasn't looking forward to going to work.
As I got dressed and ready for the day, my mind wandered to my boyfriend, Alex. We had been together for two years, and everything seemed perfect. He was charming, handsome, and loving. But lately, I had been feeling a little uncertain about our relationship.
I pushed the thoughts aside and headed to the kitchen to make some coffee. As I waited for it to brew, I checked my phone for any messages. There was one from Alex, wishing me a good morning and telling me he loved me. I smiled and felt a warmth in my heart.
Just then, my dad walked into the kitchen. "Good morning, sweetie," he said, giving me a kiss on the cheek. "How's it going?"
"I'm good, Dad," I replied, pouring myself a cup of coffee. "Just getting ready for work."
My dad, Colonel James Black, was a retired army officer. He was a strict man, but he loved me and my brothers dearly. Speaking of which, I had four brothers, all of whom were older than me. Michael, the eldest, was a lawyer. Christopher was a doctor, William was an engineer, and Richard was an artist. Yes, my family was full of overachievers!
As I finished getting ready, my dad handed me a bowl of oatmeal. "Eat this before you go," he said. "You need something to keep you going throughout the morning."
I smiled and took the bowl from him. "Thanks, Dad," I said, taking a bite of the oatmeal.
With my coffee and oatmeal in hand, I headed out the door to start my day. I worked as a receptionist at Brighton Enterprises, a large corporation owned by the wealthy and influential Brighton family. Isaac Brighton, the CEO, was my boss.
As I walked to the office, I couldn't help but think about Isaac. He was a complex man, charming and charismatic, but also ruthless and cunning. I had always been a little intimidated by him, but at the same time, I was drawn to his confidence and power.
I pushed the thoughts aside and focused on the day ahead. I had a lot of work to do, and I needed to stay focused.
When I arrived at the office, I was greeted by the familiar sight of my coworkers typing away on their computers. I smiled and said hello, feeling a sense of belonging.
As I settled into my desk, Isaac emerged from his office, looking as handsome and confident as ever. "Good morning, Carol," he said, his deep voice commanding attention. "I need to see you in my office for a moment."
I felt a flutter in my chest as I gathered my notes and followed him into his office. What did he want to see me about?
