Chapter 1

“WAKE UP!” Mathieu and his brothers woke up to their father roaring at them. The surroundings were dark, Mathieu’s eyes failed to adjust to the surroudnings of black, only outlines moved. The day felt different, nothing particular off by anything in particular but something was amiss. Alas Mathieu could not put his finger on it.

“You have had your rest, it is time for another day at work. You all know your positions and what to do. Make sure you are here at 1pm sharp so we may converse on the goods that you have required. You are all dismissed except for you Mathieu I must speak with you.”

Mathieu’s brothers scuttured out of the room. Mathieu looked at his father, sweat was dripping from his face.

“Mathieu come closer please.”

Mathieu hesitantly moved forward after a few but suddenly a loud smacking noise descended upon Mathieu’s ears continued a sharp pain on his right face cheek.

“You think I don’t know? Really? Nothing escapes me Mathieu. You dare rob me? After all I have done for you!

It was a few cigarettes! Respectfully I believe I was due something. You said yourself that I am the best worker you have.” Mathieu replied with a smug expression on his face the reaction of which is the reddening of his father’s face. The sound of glass shattering along thud could be heard this time echoed throughout the thin walls of the small apartment.

“Serves you right. Do it once more and I’ll end your life. Stupid boy.” his father spat on his body before exiting the room. Mathieu lay there the world span before him but he could see his blood on the floor along with shattered glass of an old wine bottle. Mathieu persevered though and managed to stumble his way to standing up. He carefully picked up the shattered glass piece, thinking they could have some use for him in the future.

Mathieu stepped outside and walked to a deserted alleyway he knew where there was true peace and quiet. His own getaway where he can relax without the burden of problems that plague him. Marhieu felt his backpocket “AHA!” he rejoiced as he found the last cigareete he stole.

The heavens had opened in Paris once more. The sound of rain calmed Mathieu down and made him feel at ease. There was a ladder in the alleyway. He quickly climbed up it and went on a rooftop of a small house. He smiled as he lit up his cigarette and looked at the beautiful and bustling surroundings of Paris made mkre beautiful by the clear cloudy dark sky. Truly life at the finest extent it could be, these these calm, quiet moments. Oh how much he will miss them.
