Shattered trust

The air in the grand hall was suffocating. The weight of the stares pressed down on me as I stood before them—my family, the court, and most painfully, him. Castian stood tall beside the king, his face a mask of stoic indifference. The man I had once loved, who had whispered promises of forever, now looked at me as though I were a stranger.

The accusations had come swiftly, like a blade to the heart. Treason. Conspiracy. Betrayal of the kingdom. Each word chipped away at the foundation of my life, leaving me reeling.

“Do you deny the charges, Lady Vaelora?” the king’s voice boomed, his tone sharp and unyielding.

I clenched my fists, my nails biting into my palms. My voice wavered but did not falter. “I deny them. Every word is a lie.”

Murmurs rippled through the hall, a sea of judgment and disbelief. My father sat rigid in his seat, his jaw tight, while my mother’s eyes brimmed with unshed tears. My younger brothers, too young to fully understand the gravity of the situation, clung to her sides, their faces pale with fear.

But it was my grandfather’s gaze that stung the most. His stern expression betrayed nothing, but I knew him well enough to see the faintest flicker of doubt.

“Lies?” Castian’s voice cut through the murmurs, smooth and sharp as glass. “And yet, the evidence says otherwise.”

I turned to him, my chest tightening. “You know this isn’t true. You know me.”

His lips curled into a faint, almost pitying smile. “I thought I did.”

The words struck like a blow, but I refused to flinch. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.

“Enough!” the king bellowed, silencing the room. His cold eyes bore into mine. “Vaelora Caelum, you stand accused of treason against this kingdom. The punishment for such a crime is exile to the Rift.”

Gasps echoed through the hall. Exile to the Rift was a death sentence. A place of no return, where magic itself devoured those who entered.

My knees threatened to buckle, but I forced myself to stand tall. “I am innocent,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging within me. “You’re sentencing me to death based on lies.”

The king’s gaze didn’t waver. “The decision is final. Take her.”

Guards moved toward me, their armor clinking with each step. I turned to my family, desperation clawing at my chest.

“Father, please!” I pleaded. “You know I wouldn’t do this.”

His jaw tightened further, but he said nothing. My mother’s tears spilled over, but she didn’t speak. My grandfather’s expression remained unreadable.

“Please,” I whispered, my voice cracking.

The guards seized my arms, their grips unyielding. Panic surged through me as they began to drag me toward the exit. The murmurs grew louder, a cacophony of judgment and scorn.

I twisted, trying to break free, but their hold was too strong. My gaze locked onto Castian’s one last time.

“Why?” I demanded, my voice breaking. “Why are you doing this?”

For a moment, something flickered in his eyes—guilt, regret, I couldn’t tell. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared.

“Goodbye, Vaelora,” he said, his voice devoid of emotion.

As they dragged me from the hall, the weight of betrayal crushed me. The man I had loved, the man I had trusted with everything, had destroyed me.

The doors slammed shut behind me, the sound echoing like a final verdict. My world had been ripped away, leaving nothing but the cold, empty silence of the unknown.

And as the guards led me toward the Rift, I vowed that if I survived, I would uncover the truth. And Castian would pay for what he had done.
