Summary

Polla Lee had been shifted between foster homes and orphanages since she was a little past her sixth birthday. She wasn’t sure why and had no one to explain it. Her mother had passed away two months before the birthday and her father awarded her and her two older brothers a stepmother and sister at Polla’s party. She woke up in the first orphanage two months later. She cried. A lot. Those first few weeks she cried. Not being able to understand why she had become an orphan became her obsession. She studied harder, learned faster and trained longer than any of the other kids. For ten years, she has applied every single thought to discovering why she had been abandoned. At fourteen, she found her birth father and brothers. She also started two separate internet companies. And was writing code for a third. One was solely for individuals wanting to find lost family members. The other was for investigating why they had gone missing to begin with. Now, she is two weeks past her sixteenth birthday and had made contact with her biological father. She had questions and suspected she was going to have to fight to find the answers. Let the good times roll.

Chapter 1 ~ Too Many Questions

A candied apple red Porsche GT3 RS was flying east on Interstate 76 heading toward Philadelphia. Polla Lee had left her Wyoming cabin two days prior to meet up with the people whose DNA she shared.

She was talking on the phone with Celia.. her personal assistant. “I want every bit of information on Trevor Lee and his two sons in my inbox by the time I have arrived at the Rittenhouse. Also, call the front desk and have my check in expedited. I don’t want to waste time with that nonsense. I’m tired, hungry and cranky.”

Celia laughed “Somebody needs a nap. I got the penthouse suite for you. Tossing the old man’s name out is handy. Never would have thought you are a blood relation to one of the richest families in Pennsylvania.”

Polla scoffed back “A little too high profile for my tastes. Legally, I have no choice but to move in with them. Doesn’t mean I am happy about it. When we ran away from the system two years ago and became independent, I never thought we would find I come from money.”

She whipped the car into the circular overhang at the entrance and was immediately greeted. She was given the three night contract to sign and handed a pass key.

Entering her suite, she ordered room service and stripped out of her boots, shorts and shirt on her way to grab a hot shower.

Blow drying her hair in front of the mirror, she stared at her own face, wondering who she looked like. Her eyes were large.. vivid blue with a strange starburst of green around the pupils.

Her hair was a beautiful strawberry blonde that started light at the roots and darkened as it lengthened. She had trimmed it to just below her shoulder blades before she left home.

She wasn’t short, but she wasn’t tall at 5’5. Her legs were long and shapely, her waist tiny. But she was convinced it was illusory because her boobs and butt were a little more than proportionate to her height.

Polla hadn’t let her family know exactly when she would be arriving at her family mansion. There was just something holding her back from being happy she’d found them. She knew she was dealing with a certain amount of resentment. Had they looked for her? How was she lost in the first place?

Her family was so wealthy. Then why hadn’t they ever found the missing child. She had found them.. after two months of searching DNA databases across the country.

Going over the file in her email, she found no evidence of her ever being reported missing.. Her two brothers, Tobias and Travis, were 20 and 18, respectively, so her initial instinct was to not harbor resentment against them not finding her.

Her father’s wife was Susan McKee, and she brought a daughter with her, Tabitha, who happened to be exactly two weeks younger than Polla.

The information on that pair was sparse and raised more questions than answers. Susan was a divorcee’ from Dallas, Texas. She had been a program director in one of Lee Group’s branches of graphic design.

Susan’s ex husband was a former Marine who had been discharged for insubordination and fell in with some bad people. Tom ended up doing some prison time for battery and Susan divorced him while he was incarcerated.

But there was very little background prior to her marriage. Polla had run into several brick walls in her investigation. Celia and their team was still breaking down those walls.

Too many questions. Polla knew her mother, Pauline Braden Lee, died in a car accident. She didn’t know why her mother would have been driving late at night. And alone. She didn’t understand why parts of the autopsy report were redacted. Her team of lawyers were waiting for her go ahead to petition the court for the original copies.

Trevor Lee had legally adopted Tabitha the day he married Susan, making her the youngest of the Lee children. She was quite the accomplished debutant since becoming a princess. Ballet. Violin. Etiquette and elocution.

Everything polished and ladylike. And everything Polla was not. Polla was blessed with a high IQ and was studious. She played piano and was quite proficient in art. But she was polished by the school of hard knocks, not charm school.

She learned to survive on the streets. She could.. and would.. fight at the first sign of injustice or bullying. Having to fight for food taught her survival of the fittest. It taught her to never take anything for granted.

Now, after ten years, she felt like she was entering a lion’s den and she would absolutely not allow herself to be unprepared. There had to be underlying reasons why her mother died and why she herself disappeared a few months later.

Why wasn’t her disappearance noticed? How could there not be any news media about the daughter of such an elite family had gone missing.

Too many questions.

Jessica: Tbh I wasn't expecting much from this app but God damn this book was excellent. The character build up was slow at times but really on point because of it.
